Birmingham Daily Post 04 Nov 1864 Funeral of a New Zealander at Windsor The funeral of Ananea Te Tahou of the tribe Ngatiwai Te Waiariki a Ngapuhi, from Ngunguru, Bay of Islands, New Zealand, took place on Tuesday afternoon, at Clewer Church, near Windsor. The deceased New Zealander, who died of bronchitis and rapid consumption, had been attached to Mr G. Thornton, of Sydney. He was induced by a person named Haggerty to accompany him to this country, ostensibly for the purpose of seeing the works of the Queen and the wonders of England, but in reality in order that he with others might be exhibited at theatres and other places of amusement. Finally defrauded of about 30 he was left in a sadly destitute condition in London, and was about to be moved into the country, when he became very ill, and was placed in St. Mary s Hospital, Paddington, where he died on Thursday week. Miss Weale, a wealthy and humane lady, of The Home, Winson, Birmingham, and his fellow countrymen, were with him during his illness. He had expressed to Miss Weale, who had rescued these poor natives from the abject condition, his great desire to see Windsor, and was very thankful when assured that after death he should rest near it. The guild of St. Alban provided the coffin, and on All Saint s Day the body, which had been removed from London to Windsor, was followed to the grave (which had been prepared in Clewer churchyard) by his friends Wiremou Pou and his wife Georgiana Pou (an Englishwoman), from Ngapuhi, Aperahama Te Pungatera, from the Waikato, Mr William Bambridge, photographist to her Majesty, who was with Bishop Selwyn during his residence in New Zealand, and was acquainted with the friends of the deceased; the Revds. Stephen and Henry Hawtrey, with boys of St. Mark s School, Windsor. The funeral service was performed by the Rev. T. T. Carter, assisted by the Rev. Mr O Brien, of Clewer, the New Zealanders being apparently much affected on seeing their late companion and friend consigned to an early grave in a foreign land, Ananea Te Tahou being only thirty-three years of age. 1871 Census Whitchurch Village, Whitchurch Canonicorum, Bridport Charlotte J.
