"One of the most tragic deaths to be recorded in this vicinity in many years occured last Thursday evening when Andrew J. Pierce, well known and popular farmer residing east of Checotah, was the victim of an accident at the coal mine at his farm. Mr. Pierce had recently leased his mine with the provision that he remove the water standing in the shaft and for several days preceeding the accident work had been under way fulfilling his part of the contract. A large bucket weighing more than 100 lbs, raised and lowered by horsepower was being used to remove the water from the shaft. Thursday afternoon about 4:00 pm, Mr. Pierce, following the raising of the bucket stooped over the shaft to measure the water, shouting to the young men in charge of the horses to hold the bucket. By raeason of the noise of the emptying of the bucket they did not hear his command with the result that the lowering bucket caught Mr. Pierce's head between the casing surrounding the shaft, practically breaking every bone in his face. He was rushed to a Muskogee hospital where death occurred several hours after the accident. Deceased was born near Atlanta, Georgia, September 16, 1870, being 59 years, 11 months and 20 days to time of death.
