Memorials Northwood Cemetery has a large collection of Victorian, Edwardian and modern memorials in its care. They range from plain headstones to expensive decorated monuments. All have the purpose of making sure the names of the people buried beneath were always remembered. Can you find these memorials and headstones? Augustus Hamilton (d.1871) This headstone is in the shape of an obelisk. Obelisks stood at the entrance of Egyptian tombs and became popular in Britain in the 1840s. To the Ancient Egyptians the obelisk represented a ray of light. Augustus Hamilton Harriet Fellows Dame Harriet Fellows (d.1874) In Victorian times it was fashionable to make things look like they came from medieval times. This was called the Gothic revival. This chest tomb was meant to look like family tombs in medieval churches. Can you find where it tells us Augustus Hamilton was born in India and survived a shipwreck?
Henry Haven Wheeler (d.1882) A broken column showed a life cut short. Henry was a painter and glazier. He died aged 56. Can you spot the flowers on the column? Harry Guy Henry Wheeler Harry Guy (d. 1907) The pink granite memorial is topped with an urn. Harry Sidney Guy wrote the book, A Cowes Born Lad. He built this memorial for his parents, Harry and Harriet. It represents ashfilled urns from ancient Greece and Rome. Duncan MacDonald (d.1905) Duncan MacDonald fell into a lime pit on a building site when he was only 21 months old. The grave is unusual as it has a lifelike image of him standing on it. Little Don Henry Wheeler s memorial did not break, it was made to look broken when it was new.
Cust family They were a very wealthy family. The large Celtic cross is in memory of Sophia and decorated with flowers and leaves. Sophia Cust Lt. Col. Allan Cust He was an officer in the Lincolnshire Regiment and lies opposite Sophia. Can you find the sword at the base beneath the angel? Allan Cust Olivia Graham (d.1887) She was the daughter of Charles and Helen Baring. They were an important local family. Her grave is a large lily cross. Colvilles (d.1943 and 1968) George and his wife Helen lie beside each other under stones with the highest quality lead-inlaid lettering. Lead inscriptions were common in Victorian times. Rear Admiral Gillett George and Helen Colville Rear Admiral A.W. Gillett (d.1913) His grave is a fine Celtic cross laid out on the ground. It is in a style called Arts and Crafts. Can you find the peacocks and partridges feeding from the tree of life? Charles Joseph Lambert (d.1888) Charles was a mining engineer who made his fortune in Chile and sailed round the world in 1880. Starting from Cowes, it took him 713 days. His monument is a made of pink granite from Scotland. Granite is very hard and difficult to carve. Edwin Pragnell Charles Joseph Lambert Edwin Pragnell (d.1917) Edwin Pragnell was a bank manager. Twisting flowers decorate the top of his grave. This is in a style called Art Nouveau.
Martha Flux (d.1932) This stepped design was on many items from the 1930s, ranging from furniture to the front of cinemas. This is in a style called Art Deco. Martha Flux Henryk Jach (d.2015) Henryk (Harry) was a sailor on board the Polish warship ORP Błyskawica. The Cowes-built destroyer helped defend the town during a bombing raid in 1942. He married an Isle of Wight girl, Christine, in 1945 and lived in Cowes after the war. Henryk Jach Harriot West (d.1939) A modern gravestone made of compressed stone with a colour picture added when it was made. Can you see the trawler steaming out to the fishing grounds at sunset? Charles Thomas (d.1890) Charles was a builder and this style of grave was popular in the USA. Ferns are for humility, the Lily of the Valley for purity and Ivy for everlasting friendship. Charles Thomas Frederick, Caroline and Emily Squibb These were small children from the 1860s. Can you find out their ages? Squibb James Fryer (d.1880) Can you spot the stonemason s mistake?
