Language list English Language of Material German Context Biographical Note Born in Germany 1866, died in Ascona 1946; furrier, anarchist; left Germany in 1890 for Brussels, where he made a fortune as a furrier; financially supported many anarchists, including Peter Kropotkin and Errico Malatesta, and paid for the publication of a number of Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis's pamphlets and books; his donations also secured the survival of the libertarian colony at the Monte Verità, Ascona, before the First World War; left Brussels for Zurich in 1916; saved Max Nettlau's collection from sequestration in London and Paris 1930-1932 and arranged for its transport to his house in Ascona, from where it finally came to the International Institute of Social History. Acquisition These papers were originally part of the Nettlau collection. The IISH acquired this collection in 1935 from Max Nettlau, with financial support of the Centrale Arbeiders-Verzekerings- en Deposito- Bank (the Centrale). The contract was signed November 1935. Kropotkin 1909, Sofija Kropotkin 1931, Gustav Landauer 1918, Errico Malatesta, Luigi Bertoni 1930 and Max Nettlau 1932-1937; manuscript of Kropotkin's 'Préface' to 'La Grande Révolution' 1909. NB.
