The National Archives has as a plaintif in a legal case in 1740 a John Hickmott, farmer of Yalding and son of William Hickmott late of Bockenfold Kent and Alice Hickmott his wife. We think that Alice died at Horsmonden in 1712 and William re-married in 1714 (see below). 03 Apr 1714 William HICKMUT (w) / Sarah YEOMANS (w) both of Yalding West Farleigh William may have been known as William of Bockenfold or Buckingfielday. We think he was previously married to Alice Tyler (see above). William and Sarah probably had at least two children baptised at Horsmonden - William (in 1715) and James (1715). A William Hickmott was buried at Yalding in 1774. 04 Oct 1736 John HICKMOTT/Hannah FINCETT Hunton Kent The National Archives has as a plaintif in a legal case in 1740 a John Hickmott, 1

farmer of Yalding and son of William Hickmott late of Bockenfold Kent and Alice Hickmott his wife. The local parish isters show that John and Hannah had two children baptized at Yalding - Alice in 1737 and Anne (1738/9) and a number at Goudhurst: Elizabeth (1746), Obedience (1747), Richard (1749), Thomas (1751) and Ceelia (1754). Alice (3 Oct 1737, Yalding; John)=Wm Starnes Anne (17 Feb 1738/9, Yalding; John & Hannah) 08 Mar 1738/9Stephen HICKMOT Yalding Could be the son of William Hickmott and Alice Tyler (born at Horsmonden in around 1708) or the husband of Ann Hickmott nee Relf who was buried at Yalding in 1758 (see below). 03 Feb 1756 Alice HICKMOTT/William STARNES botp Yalding (Wit: John Hickmott, Wm Humphrey). We think Alice was born at Yalding in 1737, the eldest daughter of John Hickmott and Hannah Fincett. The local parish isters show they lived at Yalding after their marriage and had the following children baptized there: William (1759-73), Alice (1763), William H. (1766) and Mary (1774). There is no record of their burials at Yalding, suggesting they have moved away from the parish sometime after 1774. 14 Aug 1757 John HICKMOTT of Brenchley /Mary WHITTLE otp Yalding (Wit: Nicholas Mol;e, William Humphrey). A John Hickmott, the son of John, was baptized at Brenchley in 1724. His mother was either Mary Sennock (married at Brenchley in 1703) or Judith Saxby (married at Brenchley in 1722). There is no record of Mary being born at Yalding (the LDS index of baptisms does show that a Mary Whittle, daughter of Robert, was baptized at East Malling in Kent in 1734). John and Mary s known children: Thomas (1759, Brenchley), Judy (1764, Brenchley) and John (1766, Brenchley). The parish isters show that a John Hickmott was buried at Brenchley in 1765. 24 Dec 1758 Ann HICKMOTT, 74 Yalding We think this could have been Ann Relfe who was baptised at Marden in 1684 and married a Stephen Hickmott there in 1706. 09 Sep 1760 William HICKMOTT of Yalding/ Eliz KNIGHT of Marden (Thos Hickmott Of Yalding yeoman, bond) Marden Cant Possible children, all baptized at Marden; John (1761), William (1762) and Phoebe (1764). The Linton parish records show that a John Hickmott, the 21 year-old son of William and Elizabeth, was buried at Linton in 1781. A William Hickmott was buried at Yalding in 1774 and Linton in 1792. 12 Jun 1768 Thomas HICKMOTT (of Yalding) /Sarah LAWRENCE Lamberhurst The LDS IGI shows Sarah was baptized at Lamberhurst on 16 June 1745, the daughter of John and Ann Lawrence. A Sarah Hickmott was buried at 2

Lamberhurst in 1791. Known children: Thomas (1773, Yalding) 26 Nov 1769 Mary HICKMOT otp/ David THOMAS of Horsmonden Yalding (Wit: Wm Starnes, Wm Humphrey). Mary was possibly the daughter of Thomas Hickmott and Eliza Walter (baptized at Horsmonden in 1743). Banns for the marriage were also read at Horsmonden where Mary was described as Mary of Yalden. No children baptized at Yalding. Thomas (14 Nov 1773, Yalding; Thomas & Sarah) 04 Apr 1774 Thomas HICKMOT/Esther COOK botp Yalding (Wit: James Letchford, Thomas Wood). On the basis of his DOB, we think Thomas may have been born at Horsmonden, the son of William Hickmott and Eliza Walter(s) (whose children included a Walter, Mary, Henry and Leonard Hickmott). Known children: Walter (1775, Yalding)=Mary Whyman, Thomas (1779, Yalding), Henry (1781, Yalding), Leonard (1786, Yalding), James (1789, Yalding). Hester was buried at Yalding in 1794, aged 44 years. We think that Thomas was buried at Yalding in 1804, aged 62 years. 22 Apr 1774 William HICKMOTT Yalding Possibly William of Bockenfold or Buckingfielday. Married Sarah Yeomans at West Farleigh in 1714 and had at least two children baptised at Horsmonden: William (in 1715) and James (1715). Walter (12 Feb 1775, Yalding; Thomas & Hester)=Mary Whyman 18 Sep 1778 William HICKMOT of Hunton/ Sarah JEFFREY otp Yalding (Wit: Thomas Bishop, William Humphrey). No record of Sarah baptized at Yalding. John (12 Jan 1779, Yalding; Thomas & Elizabeth)=Ann Cheeseman Thomas (21 May 1779, Yalding; Thomas & Hester) Henry (20 May 1781, Yalding; Thomas & Hester)=Elizabeth Leonard (12 Mar 1786, Yalding; Thomas & Hester) 03 Dec 1789 William HICKMOTT of Yalden /Eliz MACE Horsmonden We think William was born at Lamberhurst in 1737, the third son of James and Mary Hickmott of that village. His last will and testament states that he was a yeoman farmer who held a number of parcels of land around Horsmonden. Possible children: William (1793, Maidstone) and Thomas (1796, Yalding). The 1841 has a William Hickmot, aged 79, said to be independent and born in the county, living at Marden with a Mary Ladams aged 58 and also both independent and born in the county. James (17 May 1789, Yalding; Thomas & Hester) 3

15 Jun 1794 Hester HICKMOTT, 44 Yalding Hester Cook, wife of Thomas Hickmott who she married at Yalding in 1774. Thomas (10 Jul 1796, Yalding; William & Elizabeth)=Eliz Day John (1796, Yalding) The 1851 shows John, 55 year-old widower and tea-dealer born at Yalding, living at Gravel Hole in Marden with his house-keeper Eliza Baker (27, Marden) and her four children. 06 Nov 1798 Walter HICKMOTT(1775-1860)/ Mary WHYMAN (1775-1844) botp Maidstone (Wit: M. Whyman, John File). Walter was the eldest son of Thomas Hickmott and Hester Cook (born at Yalding in 1775). The 1841 has a Walter (66 year-old nurseryman) and Mary Hickmott (66) living at Maidstone with their son William (23). We think that Mary died at Maidstone in 1844. The 1851 has a Walter Hickmott, a 76 yearold former brewer and distiller born at Yalding, living at 4 College Almshouse in West Maidstone. The Catherine House records show that a Walter Hickmott died in the Maidstone RD in 1860. The 1841 has Stephen (a 45 yearold agricultural labourer) and Mary (40) living at Hawkwell in Pembury with their 15 year-old daughter, Mary [born at Yalding in around 1821]. The 1851 shows a Stephen (54, Brenchley) and Mary Hickmott (52, Yalding) living at Hawkwell Cottage in Pembury. They were still at Pembury in 1861. Mary died some time before the 1871 which shows the widowed Stephen (77, Brenchley) lodging at Ambhurst Cottages in Pembury. The Catherine House index shows that Stephen died in 1872. Probable children: Mary Ann (1821, Yalding). [07 Aug 1821 Thomas HICKMOTT (1796-bef 1861)/ Elizabeth DAY (1798- ) Marden Cant] Thomas was born at Yalding in around 1796, the son of William and Elizabeth Hickmott nee Mace (who were married at Horsmonden in 1789). She and Henry were witnesses to the wedding in Maidstone in 1833 of Charlotte Hickmott and Robert Parker (see below). 5

04 Jan 1833 Charlotte HICKMOTT/Robert PARKER Maidstone mkmi (wit: Henry and Mary Hutson). Charlotte was born at Yalding in around 1811, most likely the daughter of John and Ann Hickmott nee Cheeseman (who were married at Maidstone in 1802 and had a daughter, Charlotte, baptized at Yalding in 1806). The 1851 has Robert, 43 year-old agricultural labourer born at Hunton, and Charlotte living at Hunton with their children Henry (16), William (14), Ann (12), Richard (11), Edward (6), Sophia (3) and George Parker (2) all of whom were born at Hunton. 09 Aug 1835 Charles HICKMOTT (1813- )/ Mary Ann MAYNARD (1819-72) West Farleigh Charles is probably the son of James Hickmott and Mary Dove. He was born at West Farleigh in 1813. Mary Ann was born at Rotherfield in Sussex in around 1819 (the LDS index shows that an Anne Maynard, daughter of Edward and Mary Maynard was baptized at Rotherfield in 1819). The es indicate that the family lived at East Farleigh in 1851 (next door to Charles younger sister Eliza Spicer) and at Yalding in 1861 with Charles mother, Mary Hickmott, aged 77 years and born at West Farleigh, with them at the time - and in 1871 (the three year-old Charles Day was then a visitor). Mary Ann died the following year, aged 53 years. The 1881 shows the widower Charles living by himself at Yalding. Charles probably re-married after Mary Ann s death in 1872, to a widow Sarah Parramore at Yalding in 1874. We think that Sarah died in 1880. We have not as yet found when and where Charles died.the es and local parish isters show that Charles and Mary Ann had at least six children: Mary (1837, East Farleigh), Matilda (1839, East Farleigh), Eliza (1841, East Farleigh), James (1843, West Farleigh), Charles (1846, West Farleigh), William (1847, West Farleigh), Ann (1848, West Farleigh), Louisa (1850, East Farleigh), George (1853, East Farleigh), William Page (1855, East Farleigh), Eliza Matilda (1857, Yalding) and Kate Maynard (1860, Yalding). 24 Jul 1836 Stephen HICKMOTT (1813-86)/ Harriot SMITH (1816-58) B Monchelsea Stephen was born at Yalding in 1813 (the son of John Hickmott and Ann Cheeseman who were born at Maidstone in 1802) and worked as a carpenter. Harriot was born at Langley in Kent in 1816 and died at Boughton Monchelsea in 1858. Her mother was Jane Smith. Stephen and Harriot lived all their married lives in Boughton Monchelsea and had at least eleven children there: Mary Ann (1836), Sophia (1838), Jane (1840), William (1840), Ellen (1841), Charlotte (1843), Sarah (1845), Thomas (1847), Maria (1848), John (1850), Elizabeth (1851), Helena (1853), Stephen (1854), Eliza (1857) and William (1857). Following Harriot s death at Boughton-Monchelsea in 1858, Stephen married Amelia Sunnock at Maidstone in 1865. He died there in 1886. According to one of their descendants, John Francis Hickmott of Wellington, Stephen and Harriot s son and daughter, John and Elizabeth, emigrated from England to Christchurch in New Zealand in 1776. Their brother William came later in around 1885. While the family think that Elizabeth may have returned home, John and William remained in New Zealand. Emma (1836, Yalding) The 1851 shows Emma (aged 15) in the Maidstone District Union Workhouse in Linton. 6

Sarah (1838, Yalding) The 1881 shows Sarah (40, Yalding) who was described as a cook a visitorat the home of John (42, Little Pendleton Lancs) and Emma Macintosh (41, Maidstone) at Gate Helmsley in Yorkshire. In 1891 Sarah (57 and single) was working as a cook for the Palmers of Wishcote Hall at Owston in Leicestershire. William (1842, Yalding) The 1851 shows William (aged 9) in the Maidstone District Union Workhouse in Linton. In 1861 William, 20 year-old ag lab and single, was lodging at the George Inn in East Maidstone. William (1844, Yalding) The 1861 shows William, 17 year-old servant born at Yalding, living at Ulcombe in Kent with John Hayes Cook, 57 year-old unmarried grocer and retailer of beer who was born at Ulcombe, and John s sister Lueritia (44, Ulcombe). 30 Jul 1848 Mary HICKMOTT/James HOBBS, widw botp Yalding Parents: John Hickmott and Peter Hobbs both labourers. The 1861 shows James (45 year-old agricultural labourer born at Yalding) and Mary (33, West Farleigh) living in the village of Yalding with their seven children, all born at Yalding: Hannah (12), Eliza (10), Elizabeth (8), Mary Ann (6), Esther (4), Charlotte (2) and Rose (5m). Eliza Matilda (1857, Yalding; Charles & Mary Ann) Kate Maynard (1860, Yalding; Charles and Mary Ann)=Edwin Brotherwood 1860 Walter HICKMOTT Maidstone bdm Probably born at Yalding in around 1775, the son of Thomas and Hester Hickmott nee Cook, Walter married Mary Whyman at Maidstone in 1798 and had nine children we know of. 1862 Frances HICKMOTT/James GILBERT Maidstone bdm Frances was born at West Farleigh in 1840, the daughter of John Hickmott and Ann Joy who were married at West Farleigh in 1825 and had a daughter, Frances, baptized there in 1841. James was born at Tenterden in Kent in 1842 and worked as an agricultural labourer. The couple had at least five children: Frances (1864, Yalding), James (1866, Hunton), John Charles (1873, East Farleigh), Alfred (1875, West Farleigh) and Florence Gilbert (1879, East Farleigh). 1865 Stephen HICKMOTT (1813-86)/ Amelia SUNNOCK (1815-87) Maidstone bdm Born at Yalding in 1813, son of John and Ann Hickmott nee Cheeseman who were married at Maidstone in 1802, Stephen had earlier been married to Harriot Smith who died at B-Monchel in 1858. The 1871 shows Stephen and Amelia (56, Teston) living in Boughton Monchelsea with two of Stephen s children and one of his grandchildren. The couple were still there in 1881 together with a vistor Eleanor Masters (7, Ashford). Stephen died at B-Monchel is 1886. Amelia died there in 1887. 7

23 Oct 1869 James HICKMOTT/Martha KING botp Yalding Parents: Charles Hickmott (and Mary Ann Maynard who were married at West Farleigh in 1835) and Thomas King both labourers (The Bates Family Tree on Ancestry.com tells us that Martha s mother was Mary Latter who married Thomas King at Teston in 1843). The 1871 shows James, a 27 year-old agricultural labourer born at West Farleigh, and Martha (24, Teston) living at East Farleigh with their son Charles (10m, East Farleigh). Sometime after this James and Martha emigrated to Queensland in Australia where they had at least two other children: Kate (1874) and Matilda (born and died in 1876). Ancestry s Australian bdm indices show a Martha Hickmott, daughter of Thomas King and Mary Latter, also died in Queensland in 1876. The indices further show that a James Hickmott married Elizabeth Hunt in Queensland on 4 June 1877 ( no 792) and the following children of James and Martha died in Queensland: James William (in 1887), Elizabeth (1888) and Charles (1898). A second James William Hickmott, son of James and Elizabeth Hickmott nee Hunt, died in Queensland in 1890. James Hickmott, the son of Charles Hickmott and Mary Ann Maynard, died there in 1905. His second wife, Elizabeth Jane Hickmott, daughter of Joseph Hunt and Florence Amelia Tarbut, died in Queensland in 1926. James and Martha s known children: Charles (1870, West Farleigh), Margaret (died in Queensland in 1873), Kate (1874-1942, Queensland)=William Boniface in 1905, Matilda (1876-6, Queensland), James William (died in Queensland in 1887). Note that Kate and William Boniface had at least one son: James William Henry Boniface who, according to the Fredrickson Family Tree on Ancestry, was born at Rockhampton in Queensland in 1907, married Vivien Annie Febrin Smith and died at Rockhampton in 1976. 01 Jan 1874 Charles HICKMOTT (1813-bef 1891), widw/ Sarah PARRAMORE, wid botp Yalding Parents: James Hickmott and Thomas Nash both labourers. We think that Charles was born at West Farleigh in 1813, the son of James Hickmott and Mary Dove (who were married at Maidstone in 1802).
