Kennelly Buckingham WONACOTT -- Remembrance -- Written By Charles Newton Wonacott (1881-1968) -- Rev. Kennelly Buckingham Wonacott, my grandfather, died at his home near Quincy, Mo., on December 8, 1899, at the age of 80 years, of diabetes. For many weeks he was a sufferer, yet he bore his suffering with Christian fortitude. He was born among the mountains of Virginia, August 27, 1819, of English parents. I, Charles Newton Wonacott, was born on my grandfather's birthday, 1881. He was converted at the age of 11 years at a Methodist camp meeting, uniting with the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he was a consistent member ever since. He was an earnest worker in the Sabbath School, and always had a pleasant word for all. He was a kind husband, a loving father, and a good neighbor. He was perfectly reconciled to die, and said if It was the Lord's will, he was ready to go. A short time before he died, he called his wife and asked her to sing "Oh, when shall I see Jesus?" He was in the ministry for a number of years and was a resident of St. Clair County for 20 years. He was elected co-treasurer in 1879, and moved from Osceola to Wheatland, Mo., in 1884 and had lived in Hickory County up to his death. A few hours before his death he looked up and said "I love Jesus," and as long as he could speak, he would say "Praise the Lord." His remains were laid to rest in the Mt. Zion Cemetery near Quincy, Mo., followed by a large concourse of friends. He had been visiting his relatives there, and left Sunday morning in company with Chase Bell for the coast city. They reached San Luis about 5 o'clock. Mr. Wonacott was in good spirits and apparent good health, and stayed up until about 10 o'clock talking to the family. A small grandson (Forrest) who slept with him was undisturbed during the night. When Mrs. Robinson went to call the boy to get ready for school she found that her father had passed from sleep into death, without a sign of struggle or suffering. The corners decision was that old age was the cause of death. Charles William Wonacott was born in Virginia Nov. 8, 1849. And was, therefore, aged 80 years and 9 days at the time of his death. Few would have thought him so far advanced in years, for he retained an unusual appearance of body vigor and health. He was married to Miss Rachel Huckaby June 16, 1872, in St. Clair County, Missouri. They traveled to Wyoming with relatives, leaving Ft. Scott, Kansas May 2, 1874. After a years stay in that territory they came to Bishop, reaching here in November. Mr. Wonacott was a carpenter by trade. His first work was in building the one time well known Spencer Store in West Bishop. He built the West Bishop schoolhouse, burned some years ago, and also the one now standing. He also built the town frame schoolhouse now used for city and library purposes, the second schoolhouse at Big Pine, and a number of other structures in the valley. One of his enterprises was a sawmill on the Owens River, and he experimented with the plan of rafting material down the river but with unsatisfactory results. With the growth of Tonopah he went to that camp, and after carrying on his trade for a short time, he went into the undertaking business with Frank J. Cavanaugh, to whom he sold out to a few years since. (Note, he opened the undertaking business with George Hall. He became a partner with Frank Cavanaugh after 1912. He sold his interest in the business to Mary Cavanaugh in 1920). With the sale of his farm property here he retired from active work. Mrs. Wonacott passed on Feb. 1, 1922, when her golden wedding was but a few months away. Nine children were born to them, two of whom, Frankie E. and Forrest C., died. Those surviving are three daughters and four sons: Mrs. L.J. De Luchi, of Oakland, Mrs. T.R. Robinson, of San Luis Obispo, Mrs. A.O. Adams of Bishop, Don L. Wonacott and Albert W. Wonacott, of Bishop, Harold Wonacott of Vallejo, and Dwight Wonacott[; he was also survived by a number] of grand children and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Emily Huckaby, a sister-in-law resides at Laws. All of his returns from sales of property in Bishop and in Tonopah was deposited in the Inyo County Bank or invested in the Wattersons corporations, 17

and all was swept away in the bank crash. During his average lifetime of residence among us, Charles Wonacott's reputation was unstained, and his uprightness was unquestioned. Those that knew him feel that while he lived beyond man's allotted time, a fine citizen has been taken away. His former business associate, Frank J. John Richard Newton Bell (1893-1928) Sometime after football was introduced at Oregon State, Corvallis' John Richard Newton Bell, a Presbyterian minister and longtime member of the OAC Board of Regents, became the team's most passionate supporter. As things evolved, J.R.N. Bell, as he was known, became the official Oregon State "mascot," and he is so pictured and written about in early school yearbooks. His chief claim to fame was his ritual of marching to the Marys River after each OSU Civil War victory to toss his top hat into the water as a token of celebration. Bell first threw his hat after Oregon State's initial victory over the U of O in 1894. The event grew into one of Corvallis' most anticipated social events and by the 1920s was an established ritual in the community. To honor his devotion to the university in general and to athletics in particular, Oregon State honored Bell in the 1920s by naming its football field, known up to that time informally as "The College Field," Bell Field, a name which stayed until 1951, when Bell Field was replaced by Parker Stadium (now Reser Stadium). Bell Field, located where the Dixon Student Recreational Center is located, was razed in 1953. The last game played there was a freshman Civil War game which the Beavers lost. A Corvallis Gazette-Times newspaper article from March 1922 quotes Bell as saying he became the official mascot of athletics at the college in 1893. Attended camp meeting at Rickreall, ordained and assigned to M.E.Church, South, at Ashland. Later served as Presiding Elder. In 1855 joined Presbyterian Church. Purchased Roseburg Review; in 1886 founded Compendium, now Oregon Teachers' Journal; owned and combined "West Side" of Independence and "Democrat" of Monmouth. Clerk of State R.R.
