He disliked his first name and was always called George. He passed the exam for the Grammar School, but was denied the chance to attend as his parents said they could not afford the uniform. It was the thirties and there was little money. He was extremely good at mathematics and got the chance to attend a college to become a draughtsman, but again there was no money. At the beginning of the second World War, he was an apprentice in the shipyard, but he wanted adventure and joined the Merchant Navy as an engineer. He left the navy after the birth of his first daughter and went to work in the pits as a fitter. He loved reading science fiction, doing crosswords, cooking and DIY, both in the house and garden. He had a good sense of humour and a happy nature. She went to Grammar School, but left at 4 to go to work to help her parents. She had two sons, Alex and Donald, with her second partner, Alexander Clifton. She loved writing poetry and painting and was always experimenting with new ideas. She was the first person in Northumberland to practice Reflexology which she taught herself to do from reading books. She also used to do Tarot readings and said that she came from a family of Cornish witches. She was for a while a member of a concert party and used to perform on stage. She played the guitar. 8
