Transcription:

Burials of members of the Beaumont family at St. Mary s Church, Coleorton The following has been transcribed by Samuel T Stewart from information left in the archives of John Crocker ( local historian) Physical evidence of the interment of the ancient Lords of the Manor of Coleorton, either within the Church or consecrated burial ground have been lost, with the one exception, that being of Sir Henry and Lady Elizabeth Beaumont inside the Church (depicted below). Church records may reveal the interment, in the vault under the chancel, of the ancestors and / or successors of Sir Henry, up to 1702, since when no Beaumonts were buried at Coleorton until 1827. Much damage was inflicted on the Church, it s structure, and it s monuments, during the Civil War by occupying Parliament forces. The reader should note that some of the following information is included in supporting old church yard burials and memorial tablets / plaques audit information, but this is unavoidable due to the complexities of the information. In the South Chapel of the church:- The plaque inscription reads:- HERE LIETH THE BODIES OF SIR HENRY BEAUMONT KNIGHT, AND LADIE ELIZABETH HIS WIFE. HENRY WAS SON TO NICHOLAS BEAUMONT ESQ. ELIZABETH WAS DAUGHTER AND HEIR OF JOHN LOUIS ESQ. BY WHOM HE HAD ONLY ONE SON SIR THOMAS BEAUMONT KNIGHT, WHO MARRIED THE DAUGHTER AND HEIR OF HENRY SAPCOTT ESQ. SIR HENRY DIED THE 3 RD MARCH 1607, LADIE ELIZABETH DIED THE 26 TH MARCH 1608

In the Church Vault Interred are the remains of:- Sir George Howland Beaumont 7 th Baronet, died 7 th March 1827 aged 73 years, and Dame Margaret Beaumont, his wife who died July 14 th 1829 aged 73. Also Sir George Howland Willoughby Beaumont 8 th Baronet, died June 7 th 1845, and Dame Mary Anne Beaumont his wife, died Feb 15 th 1835 aged 28. Also their children; Susan Mary, died Sept 25 th 1827 aged one month, and Willoughby Hastings fourth and youngest son died Feb 20 th 1835 aged 21/2 years. Also Sir George Howland Beaumont 9 th Baronet, born at Lambeth Palace Sept 12 th 1828, died at Coleorton June 8 th 1882, and Dame Paula Menzies Beaumont, his first wife, born at Chinsurah, Bengal Dec 19 th 1828, died at Coleorton on Dec 9 th 1870 aged 41. Also their second son Francis Beaumont, born at Naples Feb 11 th 1854, died at Hampton Wick on Jan 3 rd 1875, and Eleanor Grace Caroline Beaumont, their second daughter, born at Coleorton on March 27 th 1859 and died at Coleorton on Dec 16 th 1870 aged 11. The information on the latter is confusing, in that Dame Paula was buried in the church yard together with Eleanor Grace Caroline and Sir George Howland Beaumont 9 th Baronet, but also listed is William Beaumont, son of Sir George Howland William Beaumont 10 th Baronet, who died at Aix - les - Bains on June 21 st 1914. This was Sir George Howland William Beaumont 10 th Baronet s son, who was born at Eaton Square, London who was actually buried at Pere-Lachaise, Paris. It would be reasonable to assume from this that the remains of Sir George, Dame Paula and Eleanor Grace Caroline, where removed to the vault at some later stage, and William Beaumonts name was added to the grave in memoriam only. Beaumonts buried in the old Churchyard In the south - east corner of the old churchyard is the grave and headstone of William Beresford Beaumont, younger brother of Sir George Howland Beaumont 9 th Baronet - In memoriam. William Beresford Beaumont M.A. Honorary Canon of Peterborough Cathedral, sometime Dean of Westa Akeley and Rector of this Parish for 36 years. He was born at Addington, Surrey on March 31 st 1831. Died at Coleorton on Feb 18 th 1901 aged 69 years. Buried in the east - side of the churchyard is Julia Beaumont, first wife of the Rector William Beresford Beaumont above. She died Sept 14 th 1866 aged 30 years. On the right side of the churchyard path lies Elizabeth Mary Beaumont, second wife of the Rector William Beresford Beaumont. She was born at Siddlesmere, Suffolk on Sep 25 th 1831 and died at Coleorton on April 5 th 1900 aged 68 years. On the right side of the churchyard path lies Dame Lillie Ellen Beaumont s grave. She was the wife of Sir George Howland William Beaumont 10 th Baronet who died Aug 18 th 1946 aged 87 years. At the east side of the Church lies the original grave of Dame Paula Menzies Beaumont, Eleanor Grace Caroline Beaumont and Sir George Howland Beaumont 9 th Baronet. William Beaumont was added to this in memoriam only, as he died in France and was buried in Paris. Please see the information given under the heading In the Church Vault.

The Churchyard extension - 1917 - Beaumont s family burial plot The Tombstones in remembrance of the Rev William Beresford Beaumont and Dame Lillie Ellen Beaumont the wife of Sir George Howland Willoughby Beaumont, 10 th Baronet. Their actual graves are both in the old graveyard. Dame Lillie Beaumont was the mother of Sir George Arthur Hamilton Beaumont 11 th Baronet. The inscription on her tombstone reads: Sacred to the memory of Dame Lillie Ellen Beaumont, wife of Sir George H.W.Beaumont 10 th Baronet, who died on Aug 18 th 1946, aged 87 years. Looking into Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. R.I.P.

The Tomb of Sir George Arthur Hamilton Beaumont 11 th Baronet. The original grave is situated in the old graveyard on the right hand side of the path. This plaque is situated on the wall directly adjacent to the Tomb of Sir George Arthur Hamilton Beaumont 11 th Baronet The inscription to the plaque reads:- THE ADDITION TO THIS CHURCHYARD IN MEMORY OF SIR GEORGE BEAUMONT 10 TH BARONET IS GIVEN BY HIS WIDOW DAME LILLIE ELLEN BEAUMONT AND BY THEIR SON MAJOR SIR GEORGE BEAUMONT 11 TH BARONET FEBRUARY 18 TH 1917 LORD, THOU HAST BEEN OUR REFUGE FROM ONE GENERATION TO ANOTHER Addendum:- The following are buried elsewhere :- Renee Muriel Bell (widow of Sir G.A.H.Beaumont 11 th Baronet) born 24 th December 1902 in Africa and died Nov 28 th 1987 aged 84 at Newbury and buried there.
