photo: Ken Ilio photo: David Ross Crown Fountain Michigan Ave 55 Chicago Illinois 60611 http://wwwmillenniumparkorg/artandarchitecture/crown_f ountainhtml This fountain, located in Chicago's Millennium Park, consists of two 50-foot glass block towers at each end of a shallow reflecting pool The towers project an ever-changing array of video images from a broad social spectrum of Chicago citizens, a reference to the traditional use of gargoyles in fountains, where faces of mythological beings were sculpted with open mouths to allow water, a symbol of life, to flow out Spanish Artist Jaume Plensa adapted this practice by having faces of Chicago citizens projected on LED screens and having water flow through a water outlet in the screen to give the illusion of water spouting from their mouths The collection of faces, Plensa's tribute to Chicagoans, was taken from a cross-section of 1000 residents (text from website Millennium Park) 7-2004 Artist Associate architect Jaume Plensa Krueck + Sexton s photo: Ken Ilio The park is open to the public 24/7 CTA train stations close to Millennium Park include the Red Line Washington Street exit and the Brown/Green/Orange and Purple Line Madison/Wabash Street exit From any of these train stops, head east until you reach the park http://wwwmimoaeu/users/annaals/guides/chicago%20dga/ 7

Trump Tower Chicago North Wabash Avenue 401 Chicago Illinois 60611 http://wwwtrumpchicagohotelcom/ The Trump International Hotel and Tower (Chicago) was originally conceived to be the tallest building in the world After the attacks in New York on September, however, the plans were scaled back to a height of 415 meters Just lower than the Sears Tower, which is also in Chicago Once completed it will also be the world's tallest residential tower, at least until Calatrava's Chicago Spire is completed just down the river The design of the building incorporates three setbacks to give it a visual continuity with the surrounding skyline Each of the setbacks is designed to reflect the height of a nearby building: the first was designed to align with the Wrigley Building, the second with the Marina City Towers, and the third with the 330 North Wabash building A riverfront park and pedestrian plaza is also expected to be built along the Chicago River Floor area/size 2009 242000 m² Skidmore, Owings & Merrill the bar/restaurant on the 16th floor is open from 6:30 am until 2am from downtown Chicago, walk north on Wabash Ave, it will be along the river on the north side http://wwwmimoaeu/users/annaals/guides/chicago%20dga/ 8

photo: Ricardo Bofill photo: Ricardo Bofill United Building West Wacker Drive 77 Chicago Illinois 60601 The project for this 50-storey office block sought to favour the possibility of a panoramic view over the city, so that there is an evident predominance of glass on the façade while nevertheless avoiding the formulaic glass tower of arbitrary forms The existence of the American tradition of skyscraper construction, with some especially attractive examples in Chicago, suggested the need to reestablish a dialogue between the classicism of stone and the high-tech of glass The façade reveals a design of classical proportions which recalls Giotto?s campanile in Florence cathedral, divided into different levels linked together by columns Particular attention has been devoted to the detailing and the appearance of the ground floor, the interior of which functions as an atrium, while the upper floors form a classically-proportioned temple on the roof photo: Ricardo Bofill Public access unknown! James R Thompson Center W Randolph St 100 Chicago Illinois 60601 http://wwwstateilus/cms/1_jrtc/ Built in 1985, the Thompson Center is one of those buildings that was both loved and hated from the very start It serves as the primary office building in Chicago for the State of Illinois It is also home to one of the largest art collections in the city with an ever-changing array of exhibits, mostly free to the public Clad entirely in glass, and spanning an entire city block, the curving façade houses a 17-story atrium meant to embody "an open government in action", an ironic phrase, considering Chicago's political history The interior elevator and escalator machinery are primarily exposed, and combined with the over-abundance of mirrors and glass, this space is strangely beautiful Another interesting view of the building is the approach from Daly Plaza, where it appears a UFO has landed in the heart of downtown Chicago Floor area/size 1985 110000 m² Murphy-Jahn 8 am - 6 pm Monday - Saturday http://wwwmimoaeu/users/annaals/guides/chicago%20dga/ 10

photo: Piotr Krajewski 860-880 Lake Shore Drive Apartments N Lake Shore Drive 860-880 Chicago Illinois 60611 860-880 Lake Shore Drive is a twin pair of glass-and-steel apartment towers on N Lake Shore Drive along Lake Michigan in the Streeterville neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois The towers were not entirely admired at the time they were built, yet they went on to be the prototype for steel and glass skyscrapers worldwide Initially, it was difficult to acquire financing for the project, turned down by lenders like Baird & Warner who considered the design scheme to be too extreme 860-880 Lake Shore Drive Apartments embody a Modernistic tone with their verticality, grids of steel and glass curtain walls (a hallmark of Mies' skyscrapers), and complete lack of ornamentation Since Mies was a master of minimalist composition, his principle was 'less is more' as it is demonstrated in his self-proclaimed 'skin and bones' architecture (text from Wikipedia) Public access unknown! 1951 Ludwig Mies van der Rohe pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski http://wwwmimoaeu/users/annaals/guides/chicago%20dga/ 11

photo: Doug Fogelson photo: Doug Fogelson Pfanner house West Ohio Street 1737 Chicago Illinois 60622 A typical residential building in gridded Chicago is placed in the middle of the lot with its required front, back and side yards enclosed with a fence As a result the side yard is usually tight and poorly defined, back yards are small spaces trapped between garage and house, and the front yard is used mainly as spacer between building and street This house is built on an undersized Chicago lot of 245' x 79' and has 3000 sqft including garage and exterior spaces (about 2/3 of its allowable building area) There is no fence around it, so it s possible to walk through the site The side yard is wide enough to form a well-defined space and to plant 4 cottonwood trees, which will provide shade and privacy to south side windows Other means of urbanizing this lot are by opening the interior to the street through its balconies, terraces, and windows The back yard is used as garden, but it s also a potential site for a new building which could utilize the remaining allowable built area photo: Doug Fogelson Project is not public! Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum N Cannon Dr 2430 Chicago Illinois 60614 http://wwwchiasorg/ As a part of the Chicago Academy of Sciences, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum seeks to provide easy access to the vast, impressive natural history of the Midwest In its first relocation since 1893, the new 6800 square meter design emphasizes the interdependence of natural and manmade environments, creatively using its history and park setting to maximize the facility and its surroundings The building is embedded in the site, preserving existing trees and contours An incision in the landscape marks the distinctive museum entry and pond gateway featuring a natural stone wall and stone paving In each design detail, visitors are reminded of the unique human connection with the natural environment, which enables the discovery and nurture of the Midwest's natural resources (text from architect's website) Floor area/size 1999 6800 m² Perkins and Will Monday - Friday: 0900-1630 / Saturday & Sunday: 1000-1700 From the freeways, exit at Fullerton Avenue Proceed east on Fullerton for 2 miles to Cannon Drive It will be on your left From Lake Shore Drive, exit at Fullerton Avenue Proceed west on Fullerton for one block to Cannon Drive It will be on your right http://wwwmimoaeu/users/annaals/guides/chicago%20dga/ 17

State Street Village South State Street 3303 Chicago Illinois 60609 http://wwwhousingiitedu/ssvphp State Street Village is the newest residence hall at IIT, the school where Helmut Jahn received his graduate degree What appears to be a single unified façade running down State Street, is actually 3 buildings, with an exterior mesh skinning connecting the entire length Courtyards and passageways further interrupt the linear progression The SSV was part of a larger drive to revitalize a part of the IIT campus left neglected by its proximity to the Green Line Directly north of the SSV lies Rem Koolhaas' McCormick Tribune Center and across the street is Mies' Crown Hall Unlike the Tribune Center, which minimized the train noise by encasing the tracks in a concrete tube, the SSV chose a more cost effective approach by using lots of concrete, and varying thicknesses of glass to deaden the noise Project is not public! 2003 Murphy-Jahn From Chicago, take the Green Line south to the 35-IIT-Bronzeville stop The building is immediately adjacent http://wwwmimoaeu/users/annaals/guides/chicago%20dga/ 18

Art Institute of Chicago Modern Wing South Michigan Avenue 111 Chicago Illinois 60603 http://wwwarticedu/aic/modern_wing/ Playing off his former successful museum designs across the world, Piano's newest design is both responsive and elegant It's location, just south of Gehry's Pritzker Pavilion, is turning this former railroad yard into Chicago's central gathering space Similar to some of his previous manipulations of light, Piano covered the new wing with a "flying carpet" of aluminum blades, that seemingly float above the limestone below Calibrated for Chicago's latitude, they allow northern light to come through the vast skylights forming the wing's third-floor ceiling Combined with a floor to ceiling glass wall along the north façade, the new addition stands in austere contrast to the traditional windowless building next door Floor area/size 5-2009 24500 m² Landscape designer Structural engineer Client Renzo Piano Gustafson Guthrie Nichol Ove Arup Art Institute of Chicago Monday 10:30-5:00 Tuesday 10:30-5:00 Wednesday 10:30-5:00 Thursday 10:30-8:00 (Free Admission 5:00-8:00) Friday 10:30-5:00 Saturday 10:00-5:00 Sunday 10:00-5:00 http://wwwmimoaeu/users/annaals/guides/chicago%20dga/ 19

Chicago Federal Center S Dearborn St 219 Chicago Illinois 60604 The Chicago Federal Center is actually a collection of three of Mies's buildings The rigid simplicity of the black geometry is considered one of the finest expressions of the 'Second Chicago School' According to the AIA guide of Chicago: "Mies's uncompromising devotion to principle, together with his vaunted sensitivity to proportion and structural detail, and, in this case, the organizational scale, combine to give the complex a monumental urban presence Both towers are curtain-wall structures, characteristic of the high-rise design of Mies's American period Their steel frames, suppressed behind uniform walls of glass and steel, are marked off by projecting steel I-beam mullions The Post Office, a unitary space with a central core, is similarly typical of Mies's reductivist concept of the single-storey pavilion Externally thin yet powerful structural columns of steel brace enormous panes of tinted glass" The Flamingo by Alexander Calder is contained within the plaza Project is not public! 1974 Ludwig Mies van der Rohe http://wwwmimoaeu/users/annaals/guides/chicago%20dga/ 24

Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago E Chicago Ave 220 Chicago Illinois 60611 http://wwwmcachicagoorg/ The MCA was the first project in the by architect Josef Paul Kleihues, and the first building made specifically for the MCA's use since the institution's founding in 1967 With almost seven times the square footage of the museum's previous facility, the MCA has space to install temporary exhibitions and works from the collection simultaneously The principles of logic and simplicity guided his decisions His design was meant not to interfere with the visitor's ability to concentrate on the art This is apparent in his minimal use of ornamentation or decorative elements He also considered the area in which the building would be located Kleihues chose to integrate the look of the MCA with the neighborhood by selecting Indiana limestone as the material for the exterior base of the building, which is meant to resemble the color of the historic water tower, located just west of the MCA (text from museum website) 1997 Kleihues + Kleihues Monday: Closed Tuesday: 10 am to 8 pm FREE ADMISSION Wednesday to Sunday: 10 am to 5 pm The MCA is located four blocks east of the Chicago Avenue rail stop on the CTA Red Line It is easily accessible by the #10 Museum and #66 Chicago Avenue buses, as well as several Michigan Avenue bus routes http://wwwmimoaeu/users/annaals/guides/chicago%20dga/ 31
