Karen M. Jensen & her husband, Laurits Christian Bondo KarenMJensenFamily.docx, 2018 by Robert A. Christiansen Part 2 contains full dates and marriage information for older family members. My website, bigpigeon.us, contains this file in Mormon History > A House Divided. bigpigeon.us contains a longer version of this report including great-grandchildren in St. Paul s > St. Paul s Family Reports. Part 1 Karen M. Jensen Narrative, updated 26 Feb 18 Although in this sketch I refer to the Bondo parents as Christian and Karen, they were more-often known as L. C. and Carrie. Christian immigrated first. Laurits Christian Fog Christian Bondo (1846 1907) was born to Niels Gumme Bondo, a parish priest, and Ana Petra Elisabeth Fog in Faaborg Sogn, Svendborg Amt. Faaborg is a scenic town of about 7,000 in the southwest part of the island of Fyn. Many members of Christian Bondo's family were Lutheran clergy in Denmark. Christian's uncle, Bruun Juul Fog, was bishop of Sjælland for ten years and Christian's younger brother, Peter Bruun Juul Bondo, served as dean of Roskilde Cathedral. Christian Bondo immigrated around 1865, probably from Vallensbæk Sogn, Copenhagen Amt, where his father was parish priest at the time. By1867 he was employed by Peter and Rachel Peterson of southwestern Boomer Township. About Peter Peterson: Peter Peterson (1828 1919) mentioned above was the first known Danish settler in the Boomer Township area. Peter Peterson had been a miner in California and in 1862, after returning to Denmark for a visit, bought and settled on the Robert Kent farm in Boomer Township, Section 36. Peter Peterson married his housekeeper, the Civil War widow Rachel (Cady) Shadden, and Peter and Rachel had eight children. Peter Peterson, like many of the later Danish settlers in the Boomer Township area, came from the Stevns peninsula on the island of Sjælland south of Copenhagen. The Peter Peterson farm and several nearby farms were located along North Pigeon creek on the site of Bybee's Camp, established in 1847. Bybee's Camp was one of many temporary settlements in the Council Bluffs area where Mormons paused for several years before continuing to Utah. When the United States Government opened Pottawattamie County land for sale in 1853, speculators acquired most of the nearby land. In 1862 when Peter Peterson bought his farm, speculators still owned large amounts of raw land, both timber and prairie, just a few miles distant. Peter Peterson's farm was well situated to serve as the nucleus for the Boomer Township Danes who began to arrive in the late 1860s. The road north from Crescent into Boomer Township forked at the Peter Peterson farmstead. One branch continued along North Pigeon Creek. The main branch turned east, crossed North Pigeon Creek, ascended McKeown hill, and then turned north and followed a ridgeline for several miles, as county road L36, also known as Clearwater Avenue, does today. From 1879 to 1884 the Harrison post office was located at the Peter Peterson farm. Perhaps this post office was named Harrison because the original road, from Mormon Days, ended at Harris Grove in Harrison County. KarenMJensenFamily.docx 17 February 2018

Peter Peterson's two oldest children married siblings, sons of Thomas Thomas and Martha Evans, Mormon immigrants from Wales who had backtrailed to Boomer Township from Utah and California. The Peter Peterson and the Thomas Thomas families are the subjects of an interesting family history, Two Families from Boomer Township. Karen M. Carrie Jensen (1846 1925), sometimes known as Karen Hendriksen, was born to Jens Christian Hendriksen and Kirsten Pedersen in Dronninglund Sogn, Hjørring Amt, northeast of Aalborg. Both Karen s parents were born in Dronninglund Sogn. Karen Jensen s Lutheran father died in 1859 when Karen was thirteen. In 1861, her mother, having converted to the Mormon faith some years earlier, immigrated to Utah with Karen s two youngest siblings. Karen declined to accompany her mother, and remained behind. Karen Jensen immigrated from Dronninglund Sogn to the Council Bluffs area of Iowa in 1867 with Gregers Marcus Poulsen Acton, his wife, and their seven children who ranged in age from fifteen down to an infant. About the Gregers Acton family: In the 1860 Denmark census, Gregers Marcus Poulsen Acton and his wife, Dorthe Marie Nielsen, were enumerated in Dronninglund Sogn. Unfortunately, the 1865 Dronninglund census has not been transcribed. In 1867 Gregers, his wife, and their seven children who ranged in age from fifteen down to an infant immigrated, bringing along Karen Jensen. I have not been able to find their immigration records. On June 5, 1867, Gregers Acton bought land in Boomer Township, Section 29. Why did the Acton family, newly immigrants from the Aalborg area, happen to pick Boomer Township in which to settle, thus setting the stage for the union of Christian Bondo and Karen Jensen? I now know the answer, and it lies with another Dronninglund family. About Christian Pedersen/Peterson: Christian Pedersen (Peterson in the United States), his wife Ane Margrete Christensen, and their first two children emigrated from Dronninglund in a Mormon company with other relatives in 1855. Christian and Ane Margrete did not go on to Utah but lived in Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska before 1868. On April 25 and June 5, 1867 Christian Peterson bought farmland in Boomer Township and in 1868 the Christian Peterson family moved to their new farm, where Christian and Ane Margrete remained until their death. The Christian Peterson and Gregers Acton families were both from Dronninglund Sogn. As explained in A House Divided, Mrs. Christian Peterson and Karen Jensen, who was employed by the Acton family, were first cousins. Gregers Acton bought land in Boomer Township on the same day, June 5, 1867, as Christian Peterson bought his second parcel of Boomer land. In this example of chain migration, the Acton family s move to Boomer was influenced by Christian Peterson s April and June land purchases. Christian and Karen together: The road to the Acton farmstead in Boomer Township went past the Peter Peterson farm. Evidently Laurits Christian Bondo, employed by Peter Peterson, and Karen Jensen, the Acton's hired girl, soon met. In Karen, A Forsaken Little Girl, based on an interview with Karen (Jensen/Hendriksen) Bondo in 1925, their meeting is described Karen M. Carrie Jensen & Laurits Christian L. C. Bondo 24 February 2018 page 2

thusly: "When Laurits first saw Karen if was as if 'someone had hit him on the forehead with a mallet'." Laurits Christian Bondo and Karen Jensen were married by a local justice of the peace on May 5, 1968, about one year after Karen immigrated. I suspect that the Acton family had mixed feelings about this marriage. They had brought her to America the previous year. Mary Acton's eighth and final child was born in June 1868. And in February 1869 Gregers Acton died and was buried in the Reel's Cemetery just northwest of the Peter Peterson farm. Mary Acton's boys were old enough to handle the farming, but the oldest Acton girl was only thirteen when her father died. Later the Acton family and Karen Jensen shared one bond. Several Acton family members, including the widow, Mary, adhered to the Seventh Day Adventist religion. And Karen (Jensen) Bondo, before St. Paul's Lutheran Church was established in Boomer Township in 1881, sent her children to Adventist school for religious instruction. After marrying, Christian and Karen Bondo are thought to have worked on railroad construction in the area, perhaps with Christian as a teamster and Karen as a cook. Christian and Karen Bondo settled in a "simple block house" near the west end of the land in Section 30 purchased jointly by Christian Bondo and John Sanderson in 1868. Here their first two children were born, my great-uncle by marriage, Peter Bondo, in 1869 and Minnie Bondo, later Minnie Christoffersen, in 1870. In May 1870, Christian Bondo and John Sanderson split their 123-acre property, with Christian Bondo assuming ownership of the west portion of 86 acres. In 1872, the Christian Bondo family left Boomer Township. They moved about eight miles to the southeast, from the partially-wooded land on the leeward side of the loess hills to prairie land in Hazel Dell Township, Section 11. Their home place in Hazel Dell Township has remained in the Bondo family and is currently owned by Paul Christoffersen, a great-grandson of Christian and Karen Bondo. In 1899, after several of their older children were married, the Christian Bondo family moved a short distance to Hazel Dell Township, Section 1 and their oldest daughter, Minnie, and her husband, Martin Christoffersen, took over the Bondo home place in Section 11. In the 1902 Hazel Dell Township plat, L. C. Bondo has assembled a farm of 328 acres in Section 1, and this farm contains at least two sets of buildings. About half of this substantial farm had earlier been the farms of Martin Christoffersen's father, Jorgen, and Martin's brother, C. J. Christoffersen. I have heard that Christian's grandson, Harvey Hansen, later included Christian and Karen's farmstead in Section 1. Below are brief sketches for families of the ten children of Christian and Karen Bondo. Full dates are in Part 2. More information is in the family reports for St. Paul s Lutheran Church, Boomer Neola, accessed from the St. Paul s area of the website bigpigeon.us. < Oluf Peter Peter Bondo (1869 1939) married Alvina Winnie Rasmussen (1878 1975) in 1897. Winnie Rasmussen was the daughter of St. Paul s early members Lars Christian Rasmussen and Karen Marie Andersen who lived in Boomer Township just west of St. Paul s. Peter and Winnie Bondo farmed in Hazel Dell Township, Section 1. Around 1930, after their son, Elmer, married, Peter and Winnie retired to the John Madison Karen M. acreage a quarter mile west of St. Paul s on the north side of the road. Members of the Peter Bondo family continued to live on this acreage for over 70 years. The seven children of Peter and Winnie Bondo, of whom the youngest two died as infants, are listed below. Of interest: Esther and Lillie Bondo, the two oldest children of Peter and Winnie Bondo, both married young men who had emigrated from Denmark before World War I and then served in World War I. Esther's future husband, Carl Magnussen, immigrated in 1912, and Lillie's future husband, Oluf Larsen, immigrated in 1913. Both Carl Magnussen and Oluf Larsen worked as farm hands in the St. Paul's community before marrying. In fact, both had worked for Esther and Lillie's father, Peter Bondo. = Esther Henrietta Bondo (1897 1988) married Carl Emil Magnussen (1893 1948) in 1920. Carl Magnussen was born in Hobro parish, Randers county, Denmark to Anders Peter Nicolaus Magnussen and Ane Marie Jensen. Hobro is in northern Denmark about 30 miles south of Aalborg. After marrying, Carl and Esther Magnussen farmed east and south of St. Paul s in Boomer Township, Section 35. In 1945, Carl and Esther Magnussen moved to her parents retirement home on the old John Madison acreage west of St. Paul s. Several years after moving, Carl Magnussen died in a tractor accident on his farm. For forty additional years Esther remained in their retirement home in Boomer Township, where she died at the age of 90. Carl and Esther (Bondo) Magnussen had five children, four of whom are deceased as of 2018. = Lillie Martha Bondo (1899 1978) married Oluf Larsen (1896 1991) in 1926. Oluf Larsen was born to Andreas Christian Larsen and Barbara Olsen in Try, Torslev parish, Hjørring county, Denmark. Em and Tise Sogns, where Oluf's respective parents were born, are neighboring parishes about 20 miles north of Aalborg. Try is in northern Denmark about 25 miles northeast of Aalborg, three miles southeast of Ostervra, and three miles southwest of Torslev Kirke. Oluf was a farmhand in the St. Paul s area, a non-commissioned officer in Company B, 109 th Engineering Battalion of the Iowa National Guard during World War I, and then worked for Peter S. Peterson in Underwood before marrying. After marrying, Oluf and Lillie bought the John Scott farm in Hazel Dell Township, Section 22. They lived together on this farm for over 50 years, although the farmhouse burned in May 1953. Lillie died suddenly at age 78, probably from a heart attack. Oluf remained on the farm until moving to the Bethany Home in Council Bluffs. Oluf and Lillie (Bondo) Larsen had six children, two of whom were twins and three of whom are deceased as of 2018. = Emma Frances Bondo (1902 1997) married Leon Emanuel Christensen (1899 1960) in 1924. Leon Christensen was the son of St. Paul s early members Niels Jorgen Christensen and Maren Kathrine Christensen who lived in Norwalk Township, Section 5. Leon was one of twelve children, nine of whom reached adulthood. Leon's mother died when he was 11 years old. Karen M. Carrie Jensen & Laurits Christian L. C. Bondo 24 February 2018 page 4

After marrying, Leon and Emma Christensen lived on the old Jacob Hansen farm in Hazel Dell Township, Section 2. Evidently the Bondos had bought this farm when Jacob Hansen moved to Colorado around 1910. By 1939 this farm was lost and the Leon Christensen family was farming elsewhere in the Underwood area. After leaving farming, Leon and Emma moved to Omaha, where Leon worked as a custodian for a utility company. Leon died at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha from a heart attack. Emma remained in Omaha for many years, doing childcare and then caring for her mother, Winnie. Emma (Bondo) Christensen later moved to the Iowa City area. She remained vigorous into her old age. She lived to be 95 years old and died at the Lantern Park Care Center in Coralville, Iowa, near the home of her son, Eldon. Leon and Emma (Bondo) Christensen had two children, both of whom are deceased. = Elmer Laurits Peter Bondo (1904 1985) married Ingrid Johanne Beck (1904-1998) in 1930. Ingrid Beck was the daughter of Rev. Theodore Pedersen Beck, the minister in Trufant at the time of the wedding, and Lena Cecilia Toxvaerd. Ingrid spent the first five years of her life in West Branch, Iowa and lived in Brooklyn, New York, Trufant, Michigan and Omaha, Nebraska before marrying. Ingrid was a member of the first class of registered nurses at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, graduating in 1925 and later became a nurse anesthesiologist. Ingrid worked as a nurse until she married. After marrying, Elmer and Ingrid Bondo farmed the Peter Bondo home place in Hazel Dell Township, Section 1. In the early spring of 1969, having sold their farm to Harold Andersen, Elmer and Ingrid retired to Blair, Nebraska. Elmer died at home in Blair. Ingrid died at the Good Shepard Lutheran Home in Blair. Elmer and Ingrid Bondo had three children, one of whom is deceased as of 2018. = Alvina Elizabeth Bondo (1908 1993) married Boas Ambrose Jacobi "Bo" Weismann (1904 1967), a native of Lincoln, Nebraska, in1928. Boas and Alvina Weismann lived in several locations in the Midwest and eventually moved to Blair, Nebraska where Boaz became development director at Dana College in Blair. Boas Weismann died at work in his office at Dana College. Alvina (Bondo) Weismann died in the Blair hospital. Boaz and Alvina (Bondo) Weismann had two children, both of whom are deceased. Boas and Alvina (Bondo) Weismann and their son, Alan Leroy, are interred in the St. Paul s Cemetery. Lee Weismann is interred in the Arvada Cemetery in Colorado. = infant girl Bondo (30 May 1911 30 May 1911). = Edward Bondo (20 Jun 1913 21 Jun 1913). Peter and Winnie (Rasmussen) Bondo along with all seven of their children and their children s spouses are interred in the St. Paul s Cemetery. < Aline Gumme Minnie Bondo (1870 1945) married Martin Jorgen Christoffersen (1865 1948) in 1893. Martin Christoffersen was the son of St. Paul s charter members Jorgen Christoffersen and Karen Jensdatter who settled in northeastern Hazel Dell Township and later moved to southwestern Neola Township. Karen M. Carrie Jensen & Laurits Christian L. C. Bondo 24 February 2018 page 5

Martin and Minnie Christoffersen first farmed in Hazel Dell Township. In 1902, they were living on the Christian Bondo home place in Section 11. Between 1902 and 1905 they moved to southwestern Neola Township, Section 31. The eight children of Martin and Minnie Christoffersen, two of whom died in childhood, are listed below. = Otto Jorgen Christoffersen (1894 1964) married Anna Christine Christensen (1895 1965/66). Anna Christine Christensen was the daughter of St. Paul s early members Niels Jorgen Christensen and Maren Kathrine Andersen of Norwalk Township. In 1919. Otto Christoffersen was farming the Christian Bondo home place in Hazel Dell Township Section 11. Between 1925 and 1930, the Otto Christoffersen family moved to Neola Township. In 1939, Otto owned the old Lars Petersen farm in Neola Township, Sections 28 and 33. As of 2018, this farm may still be owned by descendants. Otto and Anna Christoffersen had seven children, one of who died in childhood. The remaining six all married and had children. = Amos Christian Chris Christoffersen (1895 1906) died at the age of 10. = Carrie Louise Christoffersen (1898 1992) married Louis Marinus Larsen (1897 1967) in 1923. Louis Marinus Larsen was the son of Soren Christian Larsen and Mette Marie Nielsen. In 1918, Louis Larsen was a hired man for William Driver in Boomer Township, and in 1920 he was a hired man for Martin Christoffersen in Neola Township. In 1930 Louis Larsen was farming in Norwalk Township. Louis and Carrie Larsen had seven children, including two who died in infancy. = Ruth Catherine Christoffersen (1900 1906) died at the age of five. = Willie Martin Christoffersen (1903 1964) married Lillian Margrethe Larsen (1901 1959) in Kenmare, North Dakota in 1928. Lillian Larsen was the daughter of Lauritz Christian Larsen and Anna Margaretha Pedersen of rural Kenmare, North Dakota. Willie farmed the Christian Bondo home place in Hazel Dell Township, Section 11. Willie and Lillian Christoffersen had three children. = Luella Christine Christoffersen (1906 1988) ran a printing shop in Council Bluffs and never married. = Ernest Laurits Christoffersen (1909 1971) married Gene Bernice Jenson (1920 2002) in 1951. Gene Jenson was the daughter of St. Paul s early members George Jenson and Dora Nelson. Ernest and Gene Christoffersen, and later their three children, lived on the old Martin Christoffersen farm in Neola Township, Section 31. = Minnie Marie Christoffersen (1911 1978) married Erwin Maynard Orville Jensen (1910 1995) in 1945. Erwin Jensen was the son of St. Paul s early members Christian Jensen and Christine Hansen of Hazel Dell Township. Karen M. Carrie Jensen & Laurits Christian L. C. Bondo 24 February 2018 page 6

Erwin Jensen farmed the old Oscar Hough place in Hazel Dell Township across the road from the Christian Bondo home place. Erwin and Minnie Jensen had no children. Martin and Minnie Christoffersen and all eight of their children are interred in the St. Paul s Cemetery. < Henry Wilhelm Bondo (1872 1943) married Lilly Hansine Hendriksen (1876 1950) in 1903. Lilly Hendriksen was born in Hampton, Nebraska to Anders Peder Henriksen and Ane Pedersen. Henry Bondo was a Lutheran clergyman. The three children of Henry and Lilly Bondo are listed below. = Ellen Alberta Bondo (1906 1986) married Laurits Hans Peder Pedersen (1901 1978) in 1930. Laurits Pedersen was born in Denmark and lived in the United States for six years as a child before returning to Denmark with his family. At age 18, Laurits re-immigrated and a year later began his studies at Dana College. Laurits received his theology degree from Trinity Seminary in Blair, Nebraska in 1929 and served in the United States Army as a chaplain during World War II. Laurits served as a Veteran's Administration chaplain for 25 years after World War II. Laurits and Ellen Pedersen had one child. = Edna Henrietta Bondo (1908 1998) married Nathaniel Horace Skipper Nance (1912 1986) in 1957. Nathaniel and Edna Nance had no children. = Ervin Franklin Bondo (1911 1961) married Palma Karine Polly Nelson (1911-1991) in 1940. Ervin and Polly Bondo had two children. < Anna Kristine Christine Bondo (1874 1958) married Niels Johan Julius N. J. J. Nelson (1877 1957) in1906. N. J. J. Nelson was the son of St. Paul s early members Swen Nelson and Helena Sandstrom who lived a mile east and south of St. Paul s. In 1905, N. J. J. Nelson bought a small farm in Hazel Dell Township, Section 10, from Christine's uncle, Oluf Bondo. I believe N. J. J. and Christine lived on this farm until 190. In 1909 N. J. J. and Christine sold their Hazel Dell farm to Alfred Nelson and bought 80 acres in Boomer Township, Section 26, across the road from St. Paul's Lutheran Church, also from Oluf Bondo. This was a convenient location, since N. J. J. often served as the sexton of St. Paul s. N. J. J. and Christine Nelson lived on their farm in Boomer Township for the remainder of their lives. In the late 1940s they built and moved into a small house on their farm, while their son, Harold, and his family moved into N. J. J. and Christine's house. The small house was sold and moved to Underwood after their deaths. The four children of N. J. J. and Christine Nelson are listed below. = Harold Svend Bondo Nelson (1909 1993) married Amelia Katherine Emily Jorgensen (1910 2001) in 1940. Emily Jorgensen was born in Hardy, Nuckolls County, Nebraska to Thorvald Jorgensen. After marrying, Harold and Emily Nelson lived on a farm in Boomer Township, Section 27, across the road from the Boomer store, which had been owned by the Karen M. Carrie Jensen & Laurits Christian L. C. Bondo 24 February 2018 page 7

Mackland family. Sometime before 1950 Harold and Emily moved to his parents' farm in Section 26 across the road from St. Paul s. Between 1977 and 1984 Harold and Emily sold their farm to Chet and Arlene Driver and it became the residence of the Driver's son, Roger Driver. Eventually Harold and Emily Nelson moved to King County, Washington where their son, an only child, lived. Harold and Emily Nelson died in King County. = Karen Helene Helene Nelson (1911 1984) worked as a licensed practical nurse in Rochester, New York, Blair and Omaha, Nebraska, and Elk Horn, Iowa. Helene married Jens Arthur Jensen (1903 1984) in 1960. Jens had two children from a previous marriage. = Everett Kenneth Bondo Nelson (1913 1987) married Evelyn Ruth Christensen (1919 1984) in 1940. Evelyn Nielsen was the daughter of St. Paul s early members Charley Christensen and Laura Nielsen. Everett and Evelyn Nelson were living in the St. Paul s area in 1944 and 1945. By 1964, they were living in Council Bluffs. Later they may have moved to Kansas, but they returned to Council Bluffs where they died. Everett and Evelyn Nelson had four children, two of whom died at birth, in 1945 and 1949 respectively. The two surviving children are listed below. = An infant daughter, with dates unknown, died before being named. < Maria Elisabeth Mary Bondo (1877 1918) married Thomas Christian Tom Peterson (1868 1932) in 1896. Tom Peterson had immigrated to the United States from Denmark as a young man around 1885. Initially Tom Peterson farmed in Hazel Dell and Boomer Townships. Between 1905 and 1910, Tom and Mary Peterson bought the John Horn farm in Neola Township, Sections 30 and 31, about three miles east of St. Paul s. After Mary (Bondo) Peterson s early death, Tom Peterson married Magdalena Christina Christina Nelson (1882 1960). Christina Nelson was the daughter of St. Paul s charter members Peter Nielsen and Carolina Petersen of Hazel Dell Township. Tom and Christina Peterson had one child, Magdalena, who died at birth in 1923. Tom Petersen died in a motor vehicle accident in Neola Township in 1932.
