1901 42 d 17-Dec-1950; d 25-Jan-1940 c 9 Sir Street, Toowoomba, Qld., 85 years -1 months old and the Cause of Death was Heart failure, Toxaemia, Gastroenteritis. refered to as Kitty on her mother's death certificate Obituary Mrs. Mary Eliza Lindsay One of the oldest pioneers in Toowoomba, Mrs. Mary Eliza Lindsay, passed away in Toowoomba yesterday. Mrs. Lindsay came to Australia from England with her parents in 1856 and settled in Toowoomba. She would have been 84 years of age on February 5 and had lived in Toowoomba for 83 years. She could tell many interesting incidents of the early days. She well remembered how the aborigines were turned out of town every night and how her father was offered land where Ruthven-street is to-day for the sum of one pound an acre. She attended a private school at which a shilling a week was paid for tuition. In 1874 she married William Lindsay, and there were 11 children of the marriage. One son, Corporal Herbert Arthur Lindsay, was killed in the Great War. Mrs. Lindsay had 33 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She was the oldest member of the Toowoomba Salvation Army Corps and was keenly interested in the work of the Salvation Army. Mrs. Lindsay's husband died many years ago and she lived with her son Mr. Clarence Lindsay, Sir-street, for the past 14 years. She is survived by five daughters, Mesdames H. Butter (Toowoomba), L. Rye (Toowoomba), J. Drury (Toowoomba), A. Miles (Brisbane), and W. Skinner (Brisbane) and three sons, Messrs. Samuel Lindsay (Toowoomba), Clarence Lindsay (Toowoomba), who is treasurer and band secretary of the Salvation Army, and S. Lindsay. Mrs. J. Morton, William Lindsay, and Corporal Arthur Lindsay predeceased their mother. The funeral will leave from the Salvation Army Citadel to-day.
