Sherman Cornelius Harrington Sherman Cornelius Harrington, son of Enoch Harrington and Lucinda Davis, 1 was born on 2 May 1836 in Stockbridge, Windsor County, Vermont. In 1850, at age 14 years he was living on a farm with his parents and siblings in Stockbridge. 2 Sherman married on 1 Jan 1856 Laura Boutwell, the daughter of David Boutwell and Mary Woodard. 3 By 1860, Sherman s parents had relocated to a farm in Rochester, Windsor County, Vermont. Sherman followed and lived in his own home near them where he worked as a blacksmith. At that time he had real estate of $600 and personal assets of $150. 4 His wife, Laura, appears to be residing nearby in the house of his brother, Nathan and his wife, Levina. 5 On 23 Dec 1862, Sherman was appointed postmaster of West Rochester, Vermont, replacing Rufus Towle who had been appointed on 4 Aug 1855. 6 Sherman Cornelius Harrington, at the age of 28, joined the Union cause during the Civil War in 1864. He enlisted as a private at Rochester on 4 Aug 1864 into Company H, 1 st Regiment of Vermont Heavy Artillery (also known at the 11 th Regiment of Vermont Infantry.) At that time he was 5 feet, five inches tall with a dark complexion, blue eyes, and black hair and was a blacksmith. The selectmen of Rochester enlisted him for the period of one year. He mustered in on 25 Aug 1864 at Windsor or Rutland, Vermont (accounts vary) under Captain James E. Eldredge and was paid $33.33 from a total bounty of $100. The regiment was recruited in Windsor County, Vermont under the command of Col. James M. Warner. By 31 Aug 1864, he was at New Haven, Connecticut. He was present for duty in Company H from September 1864 through February 1865. On 28 Feb 1865, he was paid the second installment of his bounty - $33.33. The Regiment was assigned to the Vermont Brigade, 2 nd Division, 6 th Army Corps at Washington, D.C. They were employed in constructing and garrisoning Forts Slocum, Stevens and Totten. They participated in the battles of Charlestown, West Virginia, on 21 Aug 1864; Opequon, Virginia on 19 Sep 1864; Fisher s Hill, Virginia, 21-22 Sep 1864; Cedar Creek, Virginia on 19 Oct 1964; and Petersburg, Virginia, 25 Mar through 2 Apr 1865. On 25 Mar 1865, Sherman was reported absent from duty. On 27 Mar 1865, he was captured in the field by the Confederate Army near Petersburg, Virginia. The next day, he was confined at Richmond, Virginia in Libby Prison for three days. On 30 Mar 1865, he was paroled at Boulware s and Cox s Wharf on the James River. On 2 Apr 1865, Sherman and 17 other comrades from the 11 th Regiment, were paroled prisoners at College Green Hospital, near Annapolis, Maryland. 7 The next day, 3 Apr 1865, he was reported at Camp Parole, Annapolis, Maryland. The following day, he was furloughed for 30 days and returned on 3 May 1865. Sherman subsequently returned to duty at Company H in Danville, Virginia from prisoner of war status on 16 May 1865. The following month, on 24 Jun 1865, he mustered out of service and was honorably discharged at Bailey s Cross Roads, Virginia at the close of the war and received the remainder of his bounty. 8 Harrington, Sherman Cornelius, 22 Aug 2018 1 Bill Powers

9 Sherman returned to Rochester and in 1870, Cornelius and his wife, Laura, were living in Rochester, Windsor County, Vermont where he was employed as a blacksmith. He had real estate of $800 and personal assets of $200. Living with them were Laura s parents, David and Mary (Woodard) Boutwell and 23 year old Laura Clark who was a boarder. 10 Sherman C. Harrington s home in West Rochester, Vermont, 1869 11 By 1880, Sherman and Laura and her parents had relocated to Stockbridge where Sherman was now a farmer. 12 Sherman was still in Stockbridge, Village of Gaysville in 1890. 13 In 1900 at age 64, Sherman and Laura, were living in their own home in Stockbridge where Sherman worked as a farm laborer. 14 Laura passed away at their home in Gaysville on 2 Feb 1907 at the age of 74 years, 9 months, and 24 days. 15 In 1910, Sherman was still working as a farmer in Stockbridge. Living with him was his adopted son, rew H. Harrington, 34, and rew s sister, Agnes Heap, 36. 16 Harrington, Sherman Cornelius, 22 Aug 2018 2 Bill Powers

Sherman died on 19 May 1915 in Gaysville. 17 Pleasant Cemetery, Stockbridge, Vermont. He and Laura are buried in Mt. 18 Adopted child: (HARRINGTON surname) + i. rew H. Heap (see below) rew Heap Harrington was born on 10 Feb 1876 in New Hampshire the son of James Henry Heap and Elizabeth Buchanan. 19 In 1880, he was living with his father and six year old sister, Agnes, in Northfield, Merrimack County, New Hampshire where his father worked in a woolen mill. Where his mother was at this time has not been determined, 20 but she had passed away by 1906 when James remarried. 21 Sometime after 1880, rew was adopted by Sherman C. Harrington and his wife, Laura Boutwell, for he was using the name Harrington when on 29 Sep 1898 he married, first, Nellie M. Lamb, daughter of Austin F. Lamb and Alma Jewett. rew was working as a farmer in Stockbridge, Windsor County, Vermont where the marriage occurred. 22 rew and Nellie were living on their farm in Stockbridge in 1900. 23 Nellie died on 13 Jun 1901 of pneumonia at the age of 22years in Stockbridge. 24 Two year later, on 16 May 1903, rew married, second, 23 year old Vanlora A. Aikens, daughter of Albert K. Aikens and Martha J. Chamberlin. The wedding occurred in Stockbridge on 16 May 1903 and was officiated by R.J. Flint, Justice of the Peace. 25 Harrington, Sherman Cornelius, 22 Aug 2018 3 Bill Powers

The following year, Vanlora was in Delphos, Ohio where she gave birth to a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Harrington. After that, it appears the rew and Vanlora parted ways. In 1910, rew, 34, was living with his adoptive father, Sherman C. Harrington, on a farm in Gaysville, in Stockbridge. Also living them was rew s sister, Agnes Heap, 36. 26 rew, now 43, married, third, on 6 Nov 1919 Katie M. (Underwood) Cutler in Lawrence, Massachusetts. At the time of the marriage, rew was still living in Gaysville and working as a lumberman. Katie was living at Hampton Beach, New Hampshire where she worked as a hotel keeper. 27 In January 1920 they were farming in Gaysville, town of Stockbridge. 28 They were still there in 1930. While rew farmed, Katie ran a summer hotel. 29 Katie apparently died prior to 1940. In that year, rew was living on his farm on the North Road to Bethel. 30 In 1946, while residing in Florida, rew married, fourth, Maud D. Kimball. 31 rew died in Pinellas, Florida on 27 Mar 1952. 32 He is buried with his first wife in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Stockbridge, Vermont. rew H. Harrington & wife, Nellie M. Lamb Mt.
