Zaha Hadid Architects What is BIM? Not Just Revit! Sorry! But that s life 3D + Data = BIM 2

BIM Defenitions MAC vs PC Zaha Hadid Architects 3

What is BIM? Between 25% and 30% of the construction cost that is due to incomplete, inaccurate and ambiguous production information. This can be saved. Zaha Hadid Architects Figures of 18% reduction in drawing costs have been demonstrated and an overall cost benefit of at least 10% on the contract sum. The process offers the potential for greater saving in the delivery of the lifecycle information and the asset management data to be used and updated throughout the life of the facility or utility. 4

Zaha Hadid Architects What is BIM? BIM is the process of creating a complete virtual model of a facility for use throughout design, procurement, construction, testing & commissioning and operations & maintenance. It is characterised by having at its core a central, integrated database (the model) of the facility containing not only geometry and spatial (3D) data but also a range of additional information about those elements and such as material properties, manufacturers data etc and usually defines relationships between elements. Generally, separate models are created for Architecture, Structure and MEP designs and the software tools and processes and information models are specific to those disciplines. These separate models can all be referenced by each disciplines software tool or through specific design review software. 5

Zaha Hadid Architects BIM History Architecture is a great thing, which cannot be undertaken by all. One must have intelligence, and persevering zeal, the best knowledge and long practice, and above all grave and severe judgement and counsel to succeed in the profession of architect. For in matters of building the first glory of all is to judge well that which is fitting. To build, in fact, is a necessity. To build conveniently responds to necessity and utility, but to build so that one is praised by men of glory and not criticized by the frugal, can only come from, the ability of a learned, wise and judicious artist. (function, structure & beauty) (harmony and concord in all the parts ) 'Leon Battista Alberti', 1452 10

Zaha Hadid Architects Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an integrated process for exploring a project s key physical and functional characteristics digitally before it s built, helping to deliver projects faster and more economically, while minimizing environmental impact Coordinated, consistent information is used throughout the process to design innovative projects, better visualize and simulate real-world appearance, performance and cost, and create more accurate 12
