Ancestors of Dorothy Bertha Chinnock Generation No. 1 1. Dorothy Bertha Chinnock 1, born 1914 in Montclair, New Jersey; died 1996 in Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennessee 1. She was the daughter of 2. Harry Singer Chinnock and 3. Bertha White. She married (1) Charles Anderson Chrystal. He was born 1914 in Montclair, New Jersey, and died 1994 in Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennessee. He was the son of Charles Bernard Chrystal and Olivia Woelfel. Generation No. 2 2. Harry Singer Chinnock 1, born 06 Jul 1879 1 ; died Sep 1974 1. He was the son of 4. Harry S. Chinnock and 5. Mary Voorhis Raymond. He married 3. Bertha White. 3. Bertha White 1, born 29 Aug 1883 in Paterson, Passaic Co., New Jersey 1 ; died 1939 in New Jersey 1. She was the daughter of 6. James Hunter White and 7. Mary Chadwick. Notes for Bertha White: Bertha had to drop out of school after about 8th grade to help earn money to support the large family; she hated this, and a family friend, "Uncle Manny", offered to support her while finishing high school. Hunter was a little embarassed, and let her finish (without help from Manny). Bertha attended secretarial school at the same time, and got a job with a company, working in the "Flatiron" building in New York City. She met Harry Chinnock, and when they married, he took over her secretarial position, eventually rising to own the company.[white.ftw] More About Bertha White: Burial: Laurel Grove Cem, Totawa, New Jersey 1 Children of Harry Chinnock and Bertha White are: 1 i. He married 7. Mary Chadwick 05 Jun 1882 in Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey 1. 7. Mary Chadwick 1, born 17 Mar 1861 in Middleton, Lancashire, England 1 ; died 19 Feb 1942 in New Jersey 1. She was the daughter of 14. John Chadwick and 15. Sarah Cooper. Notes for James Hunter White: Known to his family as "Hunter", he only completed about 3rd grade. He must have been the oldest surviving son, and probably dropped out to help support the family. He became a master plumber, owned his own business with several employees (including family members), and was president of the Master Plumbers Association. He died following an auto accident while en route to see his brother John, who was very ill. [White.ftw] More About James Hunter White: Burial: Laurel Grove Cem, Totowa, New Jersey 1 Notes for Mary Chadwick: Mary was born to a weaver family; her father came to the U.S. and was employed by American mills for his skill in setting up looms. Mary and her mother and brother Harry (Henry) came over a little later, when she was about 5. The story is told that the trip was stormy, everyone sick except her, and she took her little rocking chair on deck and sat there rocking! They lived in various cities, ending up in Paterson, New Jersey, and she had to drop out of school in about 3rd grade, too, first to stay with her little brother, and with another baby who died young. Her Mother took them went back to England when Grandmother Cooper was very ill (Cancer?) and they stayed a few years, until she died, returning to Philadelphia, where her father had had another child by the landlady's daughter, according to family a family story. No more is known about him. Her father eventually returned to England, being homesick, but her mother wanted the children to have the opportunities America offered, and stayed. Mary worked at the mill with her mother, and liked it, because the mill was bright and sunny, and there were other children to play with when not working. She, for instance, was on call to get new thread when the spools on the looms were getting low. "They would show me the color wanted, and I always got them right." She met her husband when they were both vocal soloists at the Episcopal church in Paterson. She continued to work in the mills, I'm told, until two very young daughters died. Her mother took care of the children until then. [White.ftw] 4

Notes for Henry Chadwick White: Henry graduated from the College of Agriculture at Syracuse University, where he met Edith Woodward.(she always called him by his college nickname, "Red", because of his auburn hair, and he always called her by her college nickname, "Woody".) He was the only member of his family to move out of New Jersey before retirement, as he never went back home to stay after college and the army (WWI). He worked for the John Deere company for a few years, until his marriage. The company was having financial problems then, and it seemed wise to leave; on the advice of friends in the field, he took some pedagogy courses from Cornell U. during the summer and became a teacher of Vocational Agriculture. He later earned a Master's Degree from St. Lawrence University by way of extension classes.[white.ftw] More About Henry Chadwick White: Burial: Rural Cemetary, Cortland, Cortland Co., NY 1 Notes for Edith Louise Woodward: Edith graduated from Syracuse University with the help of a State Scholarship. 5

Otherwise she would have gone to Cortland Normal School, but the scholarship would have been wasted. She had a "life licence" for teaching - any grade, and subject! She used it when she went back to teaching as a substitute when her daughters were in college. Nary and Louise also both graduated from Syracuse.[White.ftw] More About Edith Louise Woodward: Burial: Cortland Rural C, Cortland, Cortland Co., New York 1 viii.
