2 Founded in 1974, the Virginia Land Title Association stands as a sentinel over Virginia s title and settlement industry. VLTA s singular purpose is to facilitate the safe and efficient transfer of real property in Virginia. To that end, VLTA sponsors valuable education, encourages new legislation, promotes high professional standards and creates valuable networking opportunities for its members. VLTA members include title agents, settlement agents, abstractors, examiners, underwriters, attorneys and supporting service providers. Virginia Land Title Association is working hard to keep your business on the cutting edge of regulatory changes. On October 3, we will witness the rollout of the new integrated mortgage closing disclosure and the beginning of Best Practices evaluations. At this year s Fall Seminar, we ll recap these changes and explore other burgeoning title topics such as fracking, fraud, and foreclosure. This year s event has been carefully planned to save you time and money. Our education sessions begin at 10:00 a.m. in Richmond so that you will be able to arrive from anywhere in the state without the need to stay overnight. Recent Trends in Real Estate Fraud & Fraud Prevention Presented by Aaron Bryan, Esq., CFE This session will focus on traditional real estate fraud schemes as well as emerging fraud trends affecting the land title industry. The presentation will provide an overview on forgery, identity theft, mortgage fraud and other prevalent real estate fraud schemes with real case examples. In addition, this session will cover cyber related crimes currently affecting the industry, examples of real cases, and tips on how to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of cyber crime. Bryan, Esq., CFE, Fidelity National Title Group Aaron J. Bryan works out of the Fidelity National Financial corporate headquarters in Jacksonville, Florida. Prior to joining Fidelity National Title Group in 2011 as a Claims Attorney, Aaron clerked for the Honorable Susan H. Black, United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. Since 2012, Aaron has been in his current role as Fraud Review Counsel-Western Operations where he is responsible for reviewing, investigating, advising and reporting transactions involving alleged fraud in title origination and claims operations across 24 states and Canada. The discussion will focus on classification of easements, recent Virginia case law regarding the proper creation of easements and factors affecting the insurability of easements and access. This session will address the validity of legal descriptions when reference is made to a recorded plat, establishing covenants, conditions and restrictions by language in a plat only, the necessity of dedication on or with a plat to convey parcels or roads depicted thereon, and the requirement for plats and plan in defining a condominium regime.
