2 Frugal Corner NOTES Looking for the best gas prices without driving all over town? There is a great app for your cell phone that tells you the prices of the gas stations around you. Even if you go on vacation or leave town, it uses your GPS system to find local prices. Just download Gas Buddy app for all of this information and it is free. It is updated by drivers all day long so prices are very accurate.. Looking for money saving helpful hints? Try this web site out: ATM fees can be avoided by a little bit of planning ahead. Your financial institution will usually give you a list of places that you can get cash without paying a fee. Also, many stores such as Publix and WaWa have no charge ATM machines. Don t pay to have your taxes done for you. You can have them done online through the IRS website. You can also do them easily with tax preparation software such as TurboTax. The software guides you through your entire tax return and has areas for questions and answers. They also allow you to e-file the IRS forms for free. If you e-file and use direct deposit you can get your refund in 1 2 weeks instead of waiting 6 weeks if you mail your forms in. You also have a lot less chance of being audited when you e-file... Never carry credit card balances. Revolving, high-interest debt is one of the biggest threats to your financial freedom. It can seriously drag you down, costing you thousands in unnecessary fees and interest charges and prevent you from saving more. If you ever want to save more money, you have to ditch the bad habit of carrying credit card balances, along with the minimum payment trap... Pay yourself first. Save a little or a lot each payday but you will never regret it. The sooner you start, the better shape you will be in when you are ready to retire. If your company has a 401k plan make sure that you contribute.. ========================================= Advertising Rates New, lower advertising rates have been set for The Highlander newsletter. These rates include advertising in the monthly newsletter plus advertising on our web page: 1/4 Page: $15 per month $60 for 6 months 1/2 Page: $25 per month $90 for 6 months Full Page: $35 per month $130 for 6 months Contact us at highlandshomeowners@gmail.com or stop by the Highlands office for more information to place your ad. DUMPING all landscape materials and trash must be deposited curbside for weekly pick up and not deposited on the golf course, nor any common or city property in the Highlands. Winter Springs will charge a fine for any dumping. Please notify the clubhouse if you see anyone dumping landscape materials or miscellaneous materials on city, common or golf course property. 4 Presidents CORNER What an HOA? What purpose does it serve? These questions and more come up from time to time. An HOA is, of course, an association whose purpose in to maintain and improve a neighborhood so as to enhance not only its appearance but also to hopefully increase the value of the properties within that HOA. One way that the Highlands does this is with this amenities that we offer. The clubhouse, the pool, the hiking trails, the tennis courts are all examples of amenities that the Highlands offer to its residents. Another way that the Highlands attempts to do this is by encouraging our residents to maintain and improve the appearance of the exterior of their properties and their yards. We are here to serve all of the residents of the community and to encourage everyone to comply with the desires and standards of the majority of those residents. We are, however, not an enforcement agency. If someone parks and blocks your driveway. If, a dog is running loose. If, trash is left in a yard. I could go on and on, but I am sure you get the idea. If any of these things occur they are a violation of a City ordinance or they be a violation of the City code. This falls outside of the area in which the HOA is allowed to operate. Certainly, we will be more than happy to assist any resident and to set them on the proper path to getting their problem solved. However, if you observe an item that you feel is a violation of the City ordinances or codes, please call and ask for an officer to respond and to handle your problem. Enjoy Life Bob Henderson P a g e 4 O f 2 3

6 The RANT The following are the WS Police Departments activity figures for November ,595. Calls for service 657. Traffics Citations were written 532. Written warnings were issued 108. Adults were arrested 50. Juveniles were arrested 5. Domestic violence calls were received 20. Traffic accidents occurred 317. Code enforcement violations were observed I am sure that all of us are well aware of the headlines, talk and demonstrations that have been occurring over the past few months. Sometimes it seems as though the entire country feels that our police are all bad and need to be replaced. Perhaps with an entirely different system? What in the world are these people thinking? The only thing that stands between us and anarchy is this thin blue line. These few police officers that patrol our streets and neighborhoods day after day, with no thought of their own safety, to ensure that the rest of us can have the lifestyle that we have become accustomed to. Here in Winter Springs we are fortunate to have a Police Department that has been recognized on both a State and National level. That have strived for and achieved the lowest crime rate in Seminole County. That have responded to each and every call that has been made to them by the residents of our city. The next time you see a Patrol Car in your neighborhood wave the officer down. Then thank him or her for their service and for being a part of that thin blue line that protects us all.
