To introduce the tudent to reearch in architecture and it ignificance in the architectural practice. b. To introduce the tudent the type of reearch in architecture and the proce of formulating a reearch plan. c. To introduce the tudent to variou method of reearch in architecture, their relative advantage and diadvantage and their application. d. To enable the tudent to undertand to link reearch and deign. e. To introduce the tudent to the technical writing. COURSE OUTLINE Introduction to reearch in architecture it need, ignificance, reearch deign, type of reearch, literature tudy, method of reearch in architecture, application of reearch in deign. TEACHING PLAN In order to achieve the two-fold aim of acquainting the tudent with the reearch proce and then enabling them to relate reearch to deign, following teaching plan i uggeted. 1. Reearch meaning, need, ignificance and application in architecture. 2. Type of reearch in architecture. 3. Step in undertaking a reearch project. 4. Method of reearch Data collection uing urvey, obervation, cae tudy, content analyi uing econdary data ource. 5. Literature ource. 6. Communicating reearch and technical writing. 7. Reearch for architectural project. 8. Preparing theoretical framework for the Arch. Project (defining cope, objective, identifying type of data (primary / econdary) required for deign, identifying cae tudie, data ource and method). 2

3 SESSIONAL WORK 1. A Tutorial on the topic no. 1 to 4 in the teaching plan above.( 25% of total mark) 2. Writing a ummary of about 1000 word on any one book / part of a book (chapter) related to architecture, read by the tudent. (25% of total mark). 3. Undertaking mall reearch on a topic, preferably related to the Arch. Project topic of the tudent and preenting it in form of a reearch paper of about 2000 word.(50% of total mark). RECOMMENDATIONS 1. Topic for Reearch : It i preferable that the topic of reearch i related to the Architectural Project the tudent intend to undertake. Thi will help the tudent to extend the finding of the reearch to the architectural deign. However depending upon the philoophy of a particular college, the college may allow topic focuing upon a particular area related to their miion tatement, which may reult in topic, which are unrelated to the Architectural Project. 2. Guide : The guide hould have minimum 5 yr. of teaching / profeional experience. Recommended Book 1. Babbie, E. The Practice of Social Reearch, (third edition). Belmont :Wadworth Publihing Co Groat, L. & Wang, D. Architectural Reearch Method, NY : John Wiley and Son Inc Kothari, C.R. Reearch Methodology : Method and Technique, New Delhi : Wihwa Prakahan Sanoff, H. Method of Architectural Programming, Dowden Hutchinon and Ro, Inc. Vol. 29, Community Development Serie Sanoff, H. Viual reearch method in deign, USA : Van Notrand Reinhold * * * ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT (TERM ) OBJECTIVE : The purpoe of the project i to allow the tudent to purue an independent line of tudy for a defined period in coniderable depth bringing together variou kill from tudio and claroom which have been acquired over the previou year. It i uppoed to be a comprehenive ummary of what ha been learned to date by the tudent, o technical competence mut be exhibited in all apect of the project. Thi i an introduction and appreciation of the deign proce through dealing with more complex building and larger project ite. The concept of building deign a a multi-diciplinary approach i to be introduced. Integration of tructural, mechanical, and environmental control ytem with the building function, form, and pace' organization i to be emphaized. Student hould be encouraged to conider ome of the concept uch a contemporary iue and trend, environmental enitivity, acceibility for the phyically challenged, alternative energy ource, afety apect of the uer/inhabitant, heritage enitivity and profeionalim in the contruction and architectural indutry. Student hould exhibit their competence with reference to: Site analyi and undertanding it implication on deign and apply different approache to deign problem olving conidering context. 3

4 Exploring deign alternative to reolve form-function relationhip. Developing an architectural deign conidering everal building engineering ytem integration. Utilizing computing eential, IT, and contemporary reource in the analyi and olution of architectural deign-related problem. Communicating deign through viual, oral and written media. COURSE OUTLINE The Project hould include reearch, program development, ite election and analyi and deign demontration. The expected effort mut be commenurate with the aigned time and the level of expertie required for a tudent who i at the final tage of award of B.Arch Degree. While there i no limitation on the typology and cale of architectural project, following guideline may be conidered for deciding the cope of the project. Acceptability will be determined baed on clarity of the problem tatement, the relative complexity of the problem, and a judgment of the ability of the tudent to deal with the problem by the Programme coordinator at the intitute. A project which concentrate on iue of large cale development mut include a minimum of architectural content that demontrate the relationhip of the project to built form. In a relatively imple project, however, detailed invetigation would be expected. The project mut include invetigation that go well beyond thoe contained in a baic architectural preentation of plan, ection, and elevation. All project mut demontrate the ability to create architectural form and reolve relevant iue of ite, tructure and contruction. Thi project i the integration of tructural, environmental control, building envelope, and building ervice ytem in the deign of the building. Fundamental deign iue related to programming, aethetic, and function are integrated with the above. Emphai i placed on developing a ytematic approach to architectural deign while imultaneouly dealing with the development of deign theory and intellectual inquiry. Reearch Requirement The project i an invetigation of architectural principle and the teting of them in the form of a deign exercie. The proce aume that the tudent will reearch the critical principle that urround their topic and the characteritic of the elected building type a well. Thi reearch may form part of the Project I phae, and will extend into the Project. The reearch hould cover the Idea, Cae Studie, Site Analyi, along with a complete bibliography of the ource tudent have conulted and intend to conult during the Project. SESSIONAL WORK: Graphical : Student hall produce a Comprehenive et of drawing in which project intent i clearly delineated. The candidate mut prepare drawing adequate to explain the deign in the form of hard copie/printout with adequate graphical quality. The three dimenional preentation in the form of perpective view, model hould preferably accompany to demontrate the overall architectural character of the project a a whole. The cope and cale of project would dictate the detail expected in a project. The report : The report hould contain Introduction to deign, problem, limitation, and deign criteria. Collection of data, cae tudie required in the deign proce for analyi and evaluation, deign olution with illutration in tandard format. 4
