1 2006 AWARD WINNERS 2006 Awards of Recognition Rose Garden Cottage An Award of Recognition is conferred upon the Vancouver Board of Parks & Recreation, Dietlein Construction; and Whistler Forest Products Corporation, for the 2005 exterior rehabilitation of the Rose Garden Cottage in Stanley Park, using log base and siding and employing traditional construction methods. Included with this renovation was the conversion of the second floor bedrooms into administrative offices for the Stanley Park Zoological Society. City Square Property Holdings for Stained Glass Windows An Award of Recognition is conferred upon City Square Property Holdings for the preservation of the 1908 stained glass windows from the auditorium of the Normal School and re- installation in their original location, supporting the heritage values of the City Square complex which incorporates both Normal and Model Schools, and in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Model School in Perri Domm & Goodbye Graffiti An Award of Recognition is conferred upon Perri Domm & Goodbye Graffiti for the advocacy of heritage preservation activities and neighbourhood revitalization in developing processes and products that sensitively remove graffiti from heritage buildings without damaging valuable historic materials. Roddington Apartments An Award of Recognition is conferred upon Elizabeth Vander Zaag, owner, and Charles Haynes, designer/contractor, for the retention and rehabilitation of the original lower level of this modest vernacular apartment building, and the consequent enhancement of the streetscape. Heritage Hall, Biography of a Building An Award of Recognition is conferred upon Marian Gilmour, author and publisher, Gail Buente, co-author, and the Heritage Hall Preservation Society for Heritage Hall, Biography of a Building, which celebrates the stories of Heritage Hall in words and photographs as a community effort in documenting the heritage conservation of this significant heritage building tracing its history from a post office to a community facility. 2 2006 Awards of Merit Leslie Lane House An Award of Merit is conferred upon Umberto Menghi, donor, Ramsay Worden Architects, and This Old House Committee, Vancouver Heritage Foundation, for the rescue and rehabilitation of the Leslie Lane House, preserving an A listed lane house, a genre once prevalent in Vancouver, and recreating its original residential use in the sympathetic context of the Mole Hill community, while also contributing to the Vancouver Heritage Foundation s development program. The jury also commends the City of Vancouver for its stewardship role in this project. Albert J. Dana House An Award of Merit is conferred upon Keate & Co., Designers, and Farpoint Architectural, for the tasteful restoration and rehabilitation of the Albert J. Dana House, 1699 Matthews, preserving an eclectic 1911 Tudor Revival house and contributing to the conservation of the historic First Shaughnessy neighbourhood. Top 10 Endangered Sites and Bus Tour 2005 An Award of Merit is conferred upon the Heritage Vancouver Society for its education and advocacy in compiling the annual Top Ten Endangered Sites list and organizing the Bus Tour 2005, a publication and activity that effectively raises awareness of conservation issues citywide Award of Honour SFU The Segal Graduate School of Business An Award of Honour is conferred upon Simon Fraser University, Paul Merrick Architecture, and Donald Luxton and Associates, Heritage Consultant, for the elegant preservation of an A listed temple bank in the heart of the financial district and its adaptive re-use into a graduate business school, restoring its exterior façade, and preserving many of its original features, while providing a highly visible, accessible, and positive public example of heritage conservation in downtown Vancouver WINNERS 2005 Award of Recognition Shaw House 2310 Ash Street Cressey Development Corp., Chernoff Thompson Architects and McGinn Engineering & Preservation Ltd. For: The retention and adaptive re-use of the 1894 Shaw House, a remnant of the earliest residential development on the south shore of False Creek. Page 2

3 Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden Expansion Project Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden Society of Vancouver, Joe Y. Wai Architect Inc., and Makam Construction Ltd. For: Its contribution to neighbourhood revitalization and as a good example of expanding a civic heritage resource to further accommodate community events and programs, thus also expanding the garden s public base and ultimate economic security. Charlotte Murray For: Her contribution to heritage conservation in Vancouver Award of Merit The Heritage Apple Orchard/Strathcona Community Gardens Strathcona Community Gardeners Society, Environmental Youth Alliance, and the Vancouver Foundation For: Conserving, and promoting the continued use of apple varieties that were grown during the early years of European settlement in the Lower Mainland. This submission is commended for being a community endeavour which involves the horticultural training of youth and others and suggests a definition of heritage transcending the traditional emphasis on building and garden. Open Vancouver Heritage House Tour Vancouver Heritage Foundation For: Its highly successful public effort in building community heritage awareness, expanding our knowledge of the city s diverse architectural history, and providing the opportunity to visit private homes in different neighbourhoods through the Open Vancouver Heritage House Tour Breaking News: The Postcard Images of George Alfred Barrowclough Authors Fred Thirkell and Bob Scullion and Heritage House Publishing Co. Ltd. For: The extensive research, the collection and publication of privately-owned historic photographs, and the meaningful narrative which all combine to enrich the historic record of early Edwardian Vancouver. 122 Powell Street Motivation, Power & Achievement Society, Davidson Yuen Simpson Architects and Stonebow Renovations Inc. For: The reconstruction and restoration of the 122 Powell Street facade and enhancing this block of Powell Street and contributing to the pride and vitality of the neighborhood. Christ Church Cathedral Christ Church (Parish) Cathedral, Iredale Group Architecture and proscenium architecture + interiors inc. For: The rehabilitation, seismic upgrading, and the revelation and conservation of some of the original interior elements of Christ Church Cathedral, all of which contribute to the ongoing viability of the historic church use. 4 St. Paul s Hospital Envelope Stabilization Project Providence Health Care Group, McGinn Engineering & Preservation Ltd. and Van Den Kerkhof & Son Masonry For: Their use of innovative engineering techniques and conservation methods in upgrading this heritage building, and in particular for the sensitive seismic upgrading and skilled attention to detail WINNERS 2004 Awards of Recognition The Corkscrew Inn An award of Recognition is conferred upon Wayne Meadows for the adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of the interior and exterior of The Corkscrew Inn. Vancouver Chinatown Millennium Gate An award of Recognition is conferred upon the Vancouver Chinatown Millennium Society for the Vancouver Chinatown Millennium Gate for its contribution to public awareness and promotion of the Chinatown heritage area and community Dundas St. An award of Recognition is conferred upon Mariken van Nimwegen for her efforts in rehabilitating the arts and crafts house at 2449 Dundas St. The Vancouver Achievement An award of Recognition is conferred upon UBC Press and author John Punter for The Vancouver Achievement, for its contribution to the documentation of heritage issues as part of the story of planning culture. The English Bay Bathhouse An award of Recognition is conferred upon The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation for the upgrade of the English Bay Bathhouse to ensure its continued use. Western Canada Building An award of Recognition is conferred upon Integra Architecture for the rehabilitation of the Western Canada Building. Railspur Studios An award of Recognition is conferred upon Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation for the rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of the Railspur Studios consistent with the design guidelines for Granville Island. 5 Queen Elizabeth Theatre An award of Recognition is conferred upon Vancouver Civic Theatres and Proscenium Architecture for the modern interventions in the three Theatre Salons of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre complex Awards of Merit John Mackie An award of Merit is conferred upon John Mackie, writer, The Vancouver Sun, for his contribution to public awareness of heritage issues in the City of Vancouver. The InterUrban An award of Merit is conferred upon The InterUrban for advocacy, contributing to the revitalization of an historical area by building community through the arts. Sinclair Centre Clock Tower An award of Merit is conferred upon Public Works Government Services Canada for the exacting standards and faithful restoration of the Sinclair Centre Clock Tower. The Taylor Building An award of Merit is conferred upon The Salient Group for the adaptive reuse and thoughtful rehabilitation of the historic Taylor Building. Modern Movement Architecture in British Columbia An award of Merit is conferred upon DOCOMOMO BC for their pioneering CD- ROM, BC.MOMO, which documents the modern movement architecture in British Columbia. Wales Street Heritage Day An award of Merit is conferred upon the Wales Street Heritage Committee for their ongoing advocacy and promotion of their annual Wales Street Heritage Day celebrations. Charles Gardner Johnson Residence An award of Merit is conferred upon Polygon Churchhill Gardens Ltd. for the challenging rehabilitation of the historic Charles Gardner Johnson Residence. Page 5

6 2004 Awards of Honour Building the West: The Early Architects of British Columbia An award an Honour is conferred upon Talonbooks, Don Luxton, and all the contributing researchers and writers, for Building the West: The Early Architects of British Columbia, for its exceptional graphic design and outstanding achievement in documenting the early architectural development of the province. Mole Hill Housing An award of Honour is conferred upon Mole Hill Community Housing Society, BC Housing and the City of Vancouver for their outstanding achievement in urban renewal, heritage conservation and community advocacy WINNERS 2003 Awards of Recognition State Hotel, 872/6 Granville Street The restoration of the upper façade of The State Hotel next to the Orpheum Theatre on Granville. Studio One Architecture and Bonnis Properties Inc. Birks Building Arch The innovative reconstruction and interpretation of the Birks Building Arch as part of the Vancouver Museum's new Joyce Walley Learning Centre. Aldrich Pears Associates and Hancock, Bruckner Eng and Wright Frank Gowen s Vancouver, Fred Thirkell and Bob Scullion and their publisher Rodger Touchie of Heritage House Press Carnegie Centre, To acknowledge the efforts and expertise of those involved it the project. James Neill and Associates, City of Vancouver, Parkwood Construction and Macleod Masonry 2003 Awards of Merit Rogers Building, 470 Granville Street The restoration of the exterior lobby and part of the ground floor retail storefront. Malkin Building, 55 Water Street The extensive restoration and upgrade to create an adaptive re-use as live work space. Page 6

The thoroughly researched and faithful restoration of this 1912 building 211 Columbia Street The excellent restoration of this building contributing to the revitalization of the Gastown district Close Residence, 3118 Alberta Street The detailed restoration of this 1914 Craftsman home WINNERS 2002 Award of Recognition Namely Vancouver An award of Recognition has been conferred on Tom Snyders and Jennifer O'Rourke for Namely Vancouver, a book that promotes awareness of the cultural and social history of our built environment. The Rudd/de Kerckhove Residence This award is to acknowledge the restoration on the front façade of The Rudd/de Kerckhove Residence and the conservation of the streetscape. An award of Recognition has been conferred on Graham Rudd and Pascal de Kerckhove Award of Merit 615 & 621 Princess Avenue An award of Merit has been conferred on Stephen Brouwers in recognition of the restoration of two historic houses at 615 & 621 Princess Avenue and for meeting the highest conservation standards and preserving a heritage streetscape East Georgia St. An award of Merit has been conferred on Birmingham and Wood, Architects and Planners, in recognition of a sensitive restoration of East Georgia St. and for contributing to the ongoing conservation of the Strathcona neighbourhood. Sunrise Hotel An award of Merit has been conferred on BC Housing in recognition of the renovation of the Sunrise Hotel, a significant effort to revitalize a threatened neighbourhood with a creative adaptive reuse of a heritage building. 8 Travelling Crane An award of Merit has been conferred on Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation in recognition of the preservation of the Travelling Crane, a significant industrial landmark Award of Honour Camelot Inn Bed & Breakfast An award of Honour has been conferred on Inara Jaunozola in recognition of the rehabilitation and restoration of the complete interior and exterior of The Camelot Inn Bed & Breakfast and for the sensitive treatment of the landscape WINNERS 2001 Award of Recognition The Commodore Ballroom In recognition of the spirited rehabilitation of an important Vancouver landmark venue, and its continued use as a social space, an award of Recognition has been conferred on the House of Blues Concerts Canada for the interior revitalization of The Commodore Ballroom Cannons To reward its work on these important historic artifacts, an award of Recognition has been conferred on The British Columbia Regiment for the preservation of Two 1863 Cannons. Vancouver and Beyond In recognition of an accessible publication that increases public awareness of heritage issues, an award of Recognition has been conferred on the authors Fred Thirkell and Bob Scullion for the book Vancouver and Beyond Award of Merit Hawks Avenue In recognition of the rehabilitation of these historic row houses and the restoration of the principle elevation, an award of Merit has been conferred on owner Hugh Wong. Pacific Mineral Museum In recognition of the faithful restoration of the exterior and the use of innovative engineering techniques in the rehabilitation of the interior, an award of Merit has been conferred on the Pacific Mineral Museum Society.
