To tht end, we endevor to remin involved nd connected to events nd projects tht could ffect our wonderful inventory tht mkes Eurek unique. City of Eurek's Generl Pln 2040 Updte The City of Eurek's stff, council, commissions, nd committees re currently holding series of meetings on updting the Generl Pln. This Generl Pln Updte (GPU) will be the blueprint for the city for the next 25 yers. The council will dopt the pln in 2018, but the work is being done now. Chnges to the Generl Pln will certinly impct historic structures. I recently ttended lnd use check-in session tht outlined plns tht would chnge the composition of existing neighborhoods. Also, s prt of the GPU, zoning nd prking will be ddressed. All of this will hve n effect on every citizen in Eurek. Don't let few people determine the vision for Eurek's future. Get involved! City stff hs developed website to ssist you in lerning bout this GPU; however, I encourge you to ttend meetings, s tht is where you will lern most bout the project. Eurek City Schools Project to Demolish the Jy lvillrd Gymnsium With the pssing of Mesure S in 2014, the Eurek City Schools is, gin, proposing to demolish the Jy Willrd Gymnsium nd construct new gymnsium. In 2005, the gym ws determined to be historic by qulified firm; therefore, the school district is following Cliforni Environmentl Qulity Act (CEQA) nd recently solicited comments on the project through Notice of Preprtion of Drft Environmentl Impct Report (EIR.) The Society submitted comments tht will be ddressed in the Drft EIR nd, of course, will respond to tht document. As prt of the Drft EIR, the school district must provide rnge of lterntives to the proposed project. Agin, I urge you to get involved in the process nd let your opinions be known. Volunteer Recognition It is our plesure to recognize Steve Lzr for his contributions to the Society over the yers, mong them: opening his Clssicl Revivl home for the Home Tour, prepring video presenttions for our events, working with Bob Libershl to develop building reserch progrm for the Society, nd serving on the Eduction Committee. When Steve's not t his job t the County Plnning Deprtment, you cn probbly find him collecting historic postcrds. 3 Annie B Updte by Bill Peer It is spring time nd grettime to visit the grdens! The Annie B hs severl projects coming up this spring tht will mke the home of the Society even more specil. First up, nd probbly the esiest, is the refinishing of the south door. After it is pinted, the glss will be replced nd the plywood will be gone. Next we hd dump truck lod of dirt delivered. Thnk you to the folks t Wes Green for donting the delivery chrge. The dirt ws used to level the south side yrd to mke it smoother nd greener for future events. A new grden fence will be instlled this month, now tht the rins hve slowed... The fence will be instlled on the F Street side of our home. The city hs pproved our design, now comes the fun prt-post hole digging! Thnks to the locl Mster Grdener Progrm, our fruit trees were trimmed in Februry. Specificlly thnks to Tom Schrder, Deborh Girud, nd Clire Perricelli for pruning our trees, which will help them grow stronger. Our Third Annul Yrd Sle is scheduled for June 3. This nnul fundrising event helps with Annie B projects nd generl mintennce. More detils will be mde vilble in the coming weeks, but plese strt sving those yrd sle items for this event. Lstly, we hd lot of rin t the Annie B in the lst couple of months, s we ll know. Unfortuntely, in our cse, the rin hs cused prt of our E Street grden wll to collpse, s you cn see in this photogrph below. This wll just doesn't extend long the length of our property, but it extends down the block. We re going to hve to replce our prt of the wll. First, I'd like to express my thnks to the currently-seted directors for ll of their hrd work on behlf of the Society. Without them, we couldn't ccomplish ll of the Society's gols: eduction, preservtion, events, nd - ofcourse - cring for the Annie B. Ryn! Thnks to our out-going directors for their servi.ce:, Helen Hui, Robin Kuhnle, nd Xndr Mnns, is ffrecited more thn I cn sy! Helen served on the bord for three terms. Her no-nonsense pproch nd direct mnner ws n sset to the bord. She lwys sked the tough questions. Robin lwys hd fun, cretive ides nd, while the Society couldn't lwys follow through on those ides, the bord ws very pprecitive nd - who knows?'- mybe some will come to fruition in the future. Xndr worked for mny yers s city plnner in different By Are cities. Her knowledge nd welth of informtion ws true sset to the bord. Lucky for us, she still serves on the Society's Eduction Committee. Welcome to our new nd returning directors: Melnie Kuhnel, Amy Sullivn, nd Jnet Wrren. Melnie hs served on the bord for the pst two yers nd she kindly greed to serve nother term. Her work creer in Scrmento, her pst service on the City of Eurek's Historic Preservtion, nd her tireless work on the Clrk District re just few of her undertkings tht mke Melnie n sset to the bord. Amy is recent trnsplnt to Eurek, where she nd her husbnd purchsed historic home nd plced it on the Locl Register. Amy is n environmentl engineer nd historic preservtion is one of her pssions, s is grdening. We look forwrd to Amy's contributions to the bord. Jnet is returning to the bord, lthough she's never relly stopped working tirelessly on the Society's behlf, such s heding up the Home Tour, chiring the Eduction Committee, nd being the editor of the Society's newsletter, to nme few. 4 Pierson's Houses The Erly Yers of Contrctor Ernest Pierson in Eurek By Bob Libershl I first herd of Ernie Pierson 14 yers go when I rrived in Eurek nd briefly styed in Pierson-built house t274o Hillside Drive. The trct houses there in Pierson's "Hillside" subdivision, built in the lte 1950s, re exmples of wht re commonly clled "Pierson Homes". Tht descriptive nme refers to both the builder nd the rchitecturl style: Ernie Pierson's loclly mss produced nd ffordble version of mid-century modern Contemporry style houses. After I relocted to n older historic Eurek neighborhood nd begn reserch of my house nd vicinity, I lerned tht Ernest Pierson hd grown up nerby in the house t 1305 F Street. But it wsn't until lst yer tht n unnticipted reserch find prompted me to delve into the history of Pierson's life nd erly creer. The McWhinney house t 1305 F Street "ws the fmily home of Ernest Pierson." John McWhinney built this house bout 1875 s the residence for his wife Elizbeth nd fmily. Their dughter Susn Alice ws born there in She mrried cigrmker George Pierson in 1911; they moved to Ferndle where she gve birth to their son Ernest G. in A few yers lter this Pierson fmily - George, Alice nd Ernie W.s liying in-eur.ek; b.tt 1920 they were residing - with widow Elizbeth McWhinney, Ernie's grndmother, t 1305 F Street. The George Pierson fmily continued to reside t the house fter Susn Alice inherited itin Ernie Pierson lived there with his prents for bout 20 yers until 1937, fter grduting from Eurek High School in Jnury 1931 nd during the erliest yers of his house building qefeer nd his mrrige. Ernie's business creer begn whild 'he ws in school, with Humboldt Stndrd newspperoute tht lso involved him selling subscriptions. After grduting high school he worked s slesmn for couple of yers. An obitury sttes tht he sold McWhinney House 1305 F Street coffee door-to-door, nd lso tht "he founded Crystl Springs Wter Co. in Freshwter s young mn." Attending Humboldt Stte College for yer, he then "begn six-month crpentry p- prenticeship." lf we wish to speculte why nd how Ernest Pierson becme crpenter nd builder, I present some relevnt informtion to consider. During the 1920s nd '30s there ws much infill residentil construction in his neighborhood. Two of the builders involved were his neighbors nerby.

5 George Bruno Von Alvensleben (G.B.V.A.) lived directly cross 13th Street, nd Ronld W. Cmeron lived behind the McWhinney house t the corner of G nd 13th Streets. While Ernie Pierson ws in school or during the 1930s he my hve been influenced by those neighbors; perhps lerning from nd working for one or both of them. He definitely would hve seen their construction work in the vicinity of his no-me. For exmple, in 1929 when Ernie ws 16 yers old, G.B.V.A. demolished n old house south of nd next door to ine McWhinney house, nd he built two houses on the site. Previously'.ftoll 1g25 to 1927, G.B.V.A. hd built three houses wrpped round the northest corner of F nd 13"' Streets; the mid one s his residence. A Von Alvensleben descendent hs stted tht "he [G'B.V.A.] tught irnie pierson crpentry." Though this necdote is unconfirmed, it is very plusible' Ernie,s future wife, nd future business prtner, Louise Grude grduted from Eurek High School in Jnury The cption for.; ". her photo in tht yer's Sequoi':ill'. yerbook identifies Louise s "Ernie's pl." Records show the first deed grnted nd the first building permit issued to Ernest Pierson. In September 1934 he obtined n unimproved 50 ft. x 110 ft. residentil Prcel in Eurek on I Street nd city building permit to erect house thereon. Records lso stte tht "cting s his own generl contrctor nd builder," Ernest Pierson begn construction on Sept. 15, 1934 of the dwelling with ttched grge t 1741 Street, which he completed on June 11, Did he build this house on specultion? Or ws it intended s the house to bring wife home to? Miss Louise Grude becme Mrs. Ernest Pierson "t quiet wedding ceremony... in Reno, Nevd" on Wednesdy August 14, The newspper nnouncement concludes by stting tfit "the bridegroom is now engged in the building nd contrcting business in this city [Eurek] where the young couple will mke their home." Whtever the intended purpose of the 1741 Street house, the newlywedsold it in November They were investing their business. The second house Pierson built ws his first under contrct to n owner. This is the house t2614 H Streetht he built for Willim Hobler. Construction begn mid Jnury 1936; the dwelling, grge nd sidewlks were completed four months lter H Street, built inl936 one block psthe prk. This ws the second home built by Ernest Pierson

6 Menwhile, erly in 1936 Ernest Pierson obtined nother vcnt residentil prcel, long E Street in the 1600 block. Tht October Pierson begn erecting two-story prtment building with four units t 1612 E street, nd smll house in bck (1616 E Street). When finished in 1937, Ernest nd Louise moved into n prtment there in time for the rrivl of their first child, son Henry. The prtment ws their fmily residence until 1940, while Ernie Pierson continued building the business, mostly with residentil construction for others under contrct, or specultive building on property he cquired. During the lte 1930s, in ddition to nother smll house (1614 E Street.) built behind the Pierson Aprtments, vriety of miscellneous residentiljobs nd some work on commercil buildings,1612e Street Photo, bout 1948, Humboldt County Historicl Society Collection Pierson built eight more houses in Eurek under contrct. He lso obtined two sites for his own development. In 1938 nd'39 he built three houses on lots he hd obtined t the corner of Henderson nd D Streets, nd sold them. Then in the utumn of 1939, two deeds conveyed to Pierson Twenty contiguous lots long both sides of O Street in the High SchoolAddition. ln 1940 ten permits were issued for houses to be built by Ernest Pierson in Eurek, with six of those long O Street. Cpping the first five yers ', of his building nd contrcting creer, in April 1940 Ernest Pierson begn construc- 1,:;,', tion of residence for his fmily t 2010 O ';1:,i'; Street. He would continue to build upscle. custom homes there in his O Street "Estwood Heijhts" neighborhood s the yers went on. The 2010 O Street house would be Pierson's home for the rest of his life.
