3 JANUARY 1, 2009 SURRY SCENE 3 MOUNT AIRY HAPPENINGS Folks from the area take cruise to Western Mediterranean Eleanor Powell Twenty-four residents from Surry and surrounding counties recently completed a spectacular visit to five countries bordering the Western Mediterranean Sea. The tour was arranged through Pilot Tours in Pilot Mountain. The trip began on Oct. 30 with a motor coach departure from Pilot Mountain to Charlotte International Airport where Lufthansa Airline transported the group to Barcelona, Spain. Here the group boarded the Celebrity Cruise Ship Century and began the ten-day cruise of the Mediterranean. The journey took the entourage to five countries: Spain, France, Italy, Malta and North Africa; and seven port of calls: Marseilles and Nice, France; Florence/Pisa/Livorno, Rome and Naples/Capri, Italy; Valetta, Malta; and Tunisia. The group took advantage of guided motor coach excursions offered at each port. In Marseille, France they took a tour of the area with stops at Notre-Dame de la Garde Cathedral and Longchamp Palace. Arriving in Nice, the group toured Monaco/Monte Carlo and visited the charming Medieval Village of Eze. Traveling on to Florence/Pisa, Italy, the agenda included a guided tour through the streets of Florence and a visit to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Nov. 4 was an awesome day for the travelers as they arrived in Rome, (Port of Civitavecchia), Italy. The guide led them through the ancient ruins of Imperial Rome, including the Colosseum where the gladiators fought for their lives. Doug Smith noted, This area is undoubtedly one of the most historically significant places in existence. After a wonderful Italian lunch, we proceeded to Vatican City and toured the largest church in the world St. Peters Basilica. A few of the group also visited the Sistine Chapel and viewed the artwork of Michael Angelo. Arriving in Naples, Italy, they joined a guide to Sorrento and toured a variety farm olive oil, wine and cheese were produced and farmers raised pigs and virtually anything that could produce income. After shopping and eating lunch in Sorrento, they left to see the ruins of Pompeii. This city was covered by the ash that fell resulting from eruption of Mt. Vesuvius and 79 AD. As a result, thousands of artifacts were preserved. Tunis, Tunisia, North African Province, was the last port of call with a tour of Tunis and Carthage. The first stop was to see the ruins of Carthage and then on to the Bardo Museum which is home to some of the most extensive collections of Roman mosaics and statuary anywhere. It also has a wide collection of major finds from Carthage and early Christian and Arabic relics. The visit also included a visit to Medina, the ancient city and shopped in the underground market just as in ancient times. Birthday wishes to Lindsey Payne, who celebrated her 15th birthday on Dec. 27. Dillard Hiatt s December birthday was celebrated, the family remembered and celebrated the miracle Dillard experienced four years ago when he had surgery for a rare form of pancreatic cancer, and the Hiatts had gathered for their annual Christmas dinner celebration. After everyone had enjoyed the delicious food, a variety of Bingo games was played. Those attending with Dillard were his sisters, Janice and Mary Ruth Shaw. Dillard s brother, Alfred, and his wife, Lois, were joined by their children, Patrick, his wife, Susan, and their children, Benjamin and Audrey of Ararat, Va.; daughter Stephanie Goins, husband, Kelly Goins, and their son, Ethan, of Claudville, Va. Mary Ruth s daughter, Linda Childress, and Linda s daughter, LaDonna, and her friend, Craig Key, celebrated with everyone. David and Bonnie Wilhite Hawkins of Pilot Mountain, Betty Wilhite and her daughter, Renee Greeson, enjoyed the evening.
