The circumstances that resulted in Sarah living with the Hallman's have not been determined but supposed that she was taken in after the death of her parents Hickory Tavern census 693/679 Henry M. Sarah Ellen MILLER and Daniel C. WILSON were married on 10 May 1866 in Catawba County, North Carolina. 11 Daniel C. WILSON (son of David WILSON and Mary A (Polly) SETTLEMYRE) was born about 1841 in Lincoln (Catawba) County, North Carolina. Listed in household of father, David in 1860 census. He served in the military 10,19 He enlisted 27 Apr 1861 at the age of 19, from Catawba County. He served as a private in Co. A, 12th Regmt., NC Troops. He transferred to Co. E, 32nd Regmt. on 14 Sep 1861 and served in the Peninsula campaign. He was wounded at Spotsylvania, Virginia, 10 May 1864, captured and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of war. He was released 19 June 1865, after taking the oath of allegiance. In his pension application made 8 June 1903 in Buncombe Co., NC, appearing before Marcus Erwin, D.C. Wilson states his age as 62 and residence as Manda, NC. He states his service was in Co. E, 32nd Regmt. of NC Troops, enlisting on 16 Aug His wounds, which would qualify him for pension, were received at Spotsylvania Court House, Va., on or about 10 May The nature of the wounds were: "Knocked down with a 'clubbed musket' at said battle and was then taken prisoner and remained in prison at Washington City [Old Capitol Prison] & at Fort Delaware [Delaware] till close of war. He never recovered from effect of the wound and imprisonment, and was unable to perform manual labor." The pension was sworn and subscribed by D.C. Wilson [his mark-x]. The application was sworn to by Dillon M. Luther, a resident of Asheville, NC, who signed with his signature. The attending physician, Aug. B. Miller(?), M.D. [who signed with a rubber stamp] attested: "The applicant, D.C. Wilson, was struck on the top of his head with a gun during the war and has been suffering from a depression in the skull at this point Since he has severe head aches - Has asthma-very bad at times-general health very poor, disability. 4/5" He appeared in the census in 1870 in Hickory Tavern Twp., Catawba County, North Carolina as follows: 25 Listed as "David Wilson", age 26, farm laborer, wife Sarah E. [Miller], age 26, son, Thomas A., age 2, Polly [Mary A. Settlemyre, his mother], age 60; (Catawba Co., Hickory Tavern Twp., residence 166, family 164). He appeared in the census in 1880 in Buncombe Co. (Upper Hominy #3), North Carolina as follows: 26 Listed as Daniel Wilson, age 45 with wife, Mary A., age 35, and son, Thomas, age 12 (residence #319) and died on 3 Jan 1911 in Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. 27,28 "On January 3rd at 6:0'clock, Daniel C. Wilson passed away. He was in feeble health for the past two years being a sufferer from asthma and something like heart dropsy [congestive heart failure] caused his death. Mr. Wilson was 68 years old. When in early years the call to arms came, he promptly enlisted in Company E, 32nd N.C. regiment and for four years was a brave, faithful soldier. His interests in Confederate matters never abated and he was always to be found at the annual reunions." [Newton Enterprise, Jan 20, 1911] In addition: "He was twice married. His first wife was Sarah Ellen Miller and to this union were born two children, of which one son survives him [Thomas Avery]. His second wife was Mary Ann Brooks of Hominy Creek, Buncombe county, and to them was born three sons. He is survived by his wife, four sons, one brother, nine grand children and a host of friends who mourn his departure. He was a member of the Methodist Church. His pastor, Rev. Dr. Mann and Dr. J.L. Murphy conducted his funeral which was preached at his home on Lincolnton street and then he was tenderly laid to rest ar Arney's church. [Hickory Democrat, Jan 12, 1911] He was buried in Arney's Chapel Cemetery, Longview, North Carolina. 27 Cemetery was searched for stone-not found. Cemetery under care of Bethel Methodist Church. A tombstone was provided by the Veterans 4

A dedication ceremony was held on November 21, 1998 with a company of Civil War reenactors from the Reactivated 26th Regiment, NC Troops giving military honors. Prior to his death he was an independent drug salesman, owned his home outright and had been married 20 years [2nd marriage] and had been out of work 10 weeks during 1910 [Catawba Co. census, 1910-Veterans].One child by first marriage died young. There were three sons by the second marriage. At the time of the 1910 Catawba County census, he had been married 20 years to his second wife. Prior to his death he was an independent drug salesman, owned his home outright and had been married 20 years [2nd marriage] and had been out of work 10 weeks during 1910 [Catawba Co. census, 1910-Veterans]. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Homer F. Greene at 2 p.m. Friday at Hickory Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Catawba Memorial Park.
