2 photo: Roland Halbe photo: Roland Halbe Housing Calle Biescas Calle Biescas Zaragoza The project comprises a program of 68 social housing in a four-story building at the southern edge of the city With its longitudinal dimension forms a peripheral urban block that responds to the different surroundings: the northern façade is closed to the crowded environment, on the other side the interior opens to the south and the views The housing units participate in this orientation, with the bedroom towards the north and living rooms towards the south, facing the inner garden space The bathrooms occupy a central position that allows a double circulation around them and the extension of the lines of sight On the exterior, it presents an opaque configuration that seeks integration with the environment - a housing complex from the sixties In the interior, it is characterized by a series of uneven wall sections defined by a polygonal The different directions and the variable positions of the sliding panels give movement to the façade and a changing view throughout the day Project is not public! 3 photo: Fernando Guerra photo: Fernando Guerra Bridge Pavilion Expo 2008 Avenida de Ranillas Zaragoza This project combines an interactive exhibition area focussing on water sustainability and a pedestrian bridge to perform as gateway for the Zaragoza Expo 2008 The bridge is built on 2 levels, with walkways and display space The structure is largely visible, enclosing exhibition spaces, and offering direct visual connections with the river whilst also shading from the sun It rests on the riverbanks of the Ebro River and a central island in its waters It has an organic shape that criss-crosses and resembles a gladiola opening and closing like a natural element The Expo terrain is called the Meandro de Ranillas, a large area of rustic land north west of the city centre, created by the Ebro River basin that forms a natural barrier between the city of Zaragoza and the fertile agricultural areas on the banks of the river photo: Fernando Guerra Floor area/size m² Technical engineer Zaha Hadid s Arup Zaragoza EXPO 2008 boeboe The site will be open from 9 am to 3 am during the expo in 2008 The expo will be open from 14th June until the 14th of September 2008 After the expo it will be a new central city pole with cultural and leisure features and productive activities especially linked to the Knowledge Society All the buildings of the Expo 2008 site will turn to other uses and will remain after the exhibition During the expo 2008 there will be Express Bus services from the city center and several other stops Check the expo website for more info The site is about 20 minutes walking from the city 3

5 photo: Luis Casals photo: Luis Casals Santa Isabel Kindergarten Calle de la Iglesia Zaragoza Santa Isabel kindergarten in Zaragoza,, is one piece of a major public building operation Together with nursery schools in the Oliver, La Paz and Actur districts, Santa Isabel completes the educational core of the programme The building is conceived as two boxes of concrete and glass One of them contains the educational programme (classrooms, sleeping rooms and multi-purpose hall), while the other incorporates the serving functions (kitchen, teacher's room and technical installations) The façades are shut to the north, protecting from meteorological inconveniences and the street In contrast, the structure opens up towards the playground and sunlight in southern direction, with its entire façade composed of U-Glass The main entrance is situated in the joint between the two pieces in the western façade photo: Luis Casals Public access unknown! 6 photo: Alberto M Sánchez photo: Alberto M Sánchez Auditorium and Convention Centre of Aragon expo 2008 Avenida de Ranillas Zaragoza The new Auditorium and Convention Centre in the Expo 2008 ground portrays a fractional and varied profile ascending and descending in dialogue with the different spaces housed in its interior and manifesting expressively the presence of natural light and the meeting point of the building with the ground Like a white shining cover, a great roof gently envelopes the different structures sheltering a large interior space fluid and continuous which demonstrates the public and institutional character of its purpose Geometry, structure and construction are part of this proposal for a single combined concept The brilliance and clarity of the image of the building which will dominate during the day will have its counterpoint at night when the Convention Centre will appear as a landscape of solid light emerging from the ground: the metaphor of an intangible condition which perhaps unconsciously the architects imagined from the beginning for this building photo: Alberto M Sánchez 2008 Roof & facade consultant Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos Arup Government of Aragón asanchez 6

8 photo: Jordi Bernadó photo: Jordi Bernadó Independencia Avenue Paseo de la Independencia Zaragoza Starting from a central disposition in the city and from the pedestrian primacy along porches and sidewalks, the project had to create a pedestrian continuity between the two opposite point of each square In the new design for the Independencia Avenue priority is given to pedestrian circulation, with no change in the grade and floor Recuperation and joining of the pedestrian space that is duplicated thanks to two sidewalks with trees and a French boulevard section And furthermore the current monuments are situated more central thanks to pedestrian spaces around them The floor is basically made of white and gray granite The trees disposition en Aragón Square works as a vegetal covered entrance Linden is used together with pagoda tree and some coloured and perfumed tree as magnolia and mimosa The three different types of street lights are an architectonic piece of the Avenue Floor area/size m² City of Zaragoza aldayjover photo: Jordi Bernadó 24/7 8

9 photo: Jordi Bernadó photo: Jordi Bernadó The Mill Cultural Centre Calle Molino Zaragoza Starting from an ancient ruin of a grain mill that worked with hydraulic energy of an important ditch in the centre of town we designed a cultural centre that at approaches the didactic explanation of the grain mills history: the Centro Cultural El Molino To maintain the identity of the ruins we decided to built a union between the ancient and the modern The building is small but it has a great importance in the historic memory of Utebo people, for this reason and for being surrounded by housing we shaped an abstract volume without references to human scale and located quite far from the entrances to give it a kind of symbolic presence We designed a square in front of the building, a teat cine that goes down towards the scenery made of stone vaults This exterior hall is surrounded by walls, protected from wind and shaded by lindens The ochre painted ferroconcrete, natural evolution of stabilized earth unify the whole building as if it's shaped in one material Floor area/size m² City of Utebo aldayjover photo: Jordi Bernadó 9

10 photo: Jordi Bernadó photo: Jordi Bernadó Metropolitan Park of Water Avenida Ranillas Zaragoza Metropolitan park of Water was designed for Expo 2008 water and the sustainable development Located in the green-strip of the Ebro, our ambition is not to place a brutal drawing on the site but to leave the ground to express its qualities: on the contrary to the architecture, the landscape is not drawn, it expresses the history of a territory and of the relation that their inhabitants maintain with it The areas of bath, the more designed parts and the buildings assisting the park are protected from swellings while the shore forest as is needed by its nature and necessities of irrigation will be covered by the lamina of the Ebro In order to materialize this idea we have made a silver-plated palette, made for vegetation, water, wood, stone and light, for shade and reflections, that we used to compose the vocabulary of the park starting from four fundamental decisions photo: Jordi Bernadó Floor area/size m² Main designer, Landscape architect Christine Dalnoky City of Zaragoza aldayjover 10

12 photo: Alberto M Sánchez photo: Alberto M Sánchez Ceremony Pavilion Meandro de las Ranillas Zaragoza Aldayjover architects designed 3 pavilions in the park, each for different purposes, but all with the same material: metal and vegetation The Ceremony Pavilion comprises two rooms at double height, between exterior entrance plazas, and is built from a prefabricated ribbed plywood panel, wood-cement board painted on the outside and panes of U-glass with plant panelling that form its secular altarpieces photo: Wojtek Gurak 2008 asanchez 12

13 photo: Hans Brinker photo: Hans Brinker Aragon Pavilion Avenida de Ranillas Zaragoza n=677&idioma=en_gb&id= do This building was constructed for the Expo 2008 The pavilion is shaped like a wicker basket suspended on three pillars, leaving a free space below that is used as a plaza during the event The façade consists of layers of intertwined panels of glass and micro-concrete with white glass fibre, providing the interior with a large quantity of natural light This weave is opaque in the base, becoming more transparent as the building gets higher The lighting is further guaranteed by six skylights above The floor plan measures 50x50m with minor differences by floor because of its external shape The pavilion has 3,000 square meters of exhibition area in addition to smaller rooms, administrative offices, a cafeteria and a large terrace During the international event the pavilion explains the developments of the relationship between water and the region of Aragon After the Expo, the pavilion will be used by the Government of Aragon photo: Wojtek Gurak 2008 Olano y Mendo Arquitectos hansbrinker 13

16 photo: Lydia Gonzalez Dios photo: Lydia Gonzalez Dios Hiberus Hotel Paseo de los Puentes Zaragoza It is a question of a horizontal building, of five heights, of very wide spaces, with an atypical construction for an urban hotel Their 176 rooms offer a vision in the first line of the city and the river Ebro Your stays have been decorated by furniture of design of Arne Jacobsen, of Nordic style years 50 The building is a large block with a location that increases the feeling of well-being offered by its interior design The rooms face south in a long, narrow structure This layout gives them a view of the river and the city through a frame created by the Third Millenium Bridge and the Bridge Pavilion The balconies are located on the other side of the rooms They face north and overlook the function rooms, which are lit through patios landscaped with palm trees These exterior spaces are protected from the wind and noise by a large, terraced noise barrier made of concrete panels and glass eyes photo: Lydia Gonzalez Dios Project is not public! 17 photo: Jesús Granada photo: Roland Halbe Oliver Kindergarten Calle de Antonio de Leyva Zaragoza The site is situated in a typically Spanish, present-day urban expansion, surrounded by uniform eight-storey residential buildings The small-scale intervention is dominated by a green sloping roof which relates to the topography of the adjacent park In contrast to the neighbouring buildings, it orientates itself by the dynamic of the direct surrounding The concept is built up on two focus points On one hand, there is the crucial connection to the landscape which does not only give the building its character but also strengthens the area interactively On the other hand, it concentrates on its function as a place for children and provides an individual approach for the different age groups and their special needs Consequently a variety of volumes are combined underneath a multiple-folded roof wherein spaces offer response to different usage There are wide open areas used for festivities and fairs as well as bespoke low areas specifically for the toddlers photo: Jesús Granada Project is not public!
