3 photo: ptk photo: ptk Opera de Lyon Place de la Comédie Lyon Jean Nouvel won the competition to extend and renovate the Opera House in Lyon, with a project that used the old building, particularly its grand ground- and first-floor façades on the south, east, and west, as a point of departure and reference for the new This way Nouvel linked the building to the surrounding official buildings, but the new drum roof, like the lid of an enormous jewel box, however, marks it as wholly contemporary By both night and day this dense and complex building forms a new landmark for the city This project has become very popular in this city, not only because it was breaking the rules of reacting on historical environment, but also because of its quality in mixed space design Project is public! 12 photo: Michela Sala photo: Michela Sala Claude Bernard University Avenue Tony Garnier Lyon This educational building in Lyon consists of three elements: the foundation, the blocks and the blade of glass The base, in contact with the ground and the flows of the city, emerges as a rock and contains the most dense activities (lobby, cafeteria, amphitheaters) Made of 'pleated' reinforced concrete, this block is pierced at random and opens generously to the garden The programme diversity led to a random openings composition on different fronts The link between the blocks is carried out by horizontal structures, protected by a large blade glass façade located on Avenue Tony Garnier In addition to the functional connections allowed by the blade of glass, it is also an acoustic screen against the noise of traffic, a space for strolling and contemplation of the urban spectacle, but also a institutional façade of the university photo: Michela Sala Project is public! 14 photo: ptk photo: ptk Social Housing Croix Rousse Rue Grataloup Lyon The street elevation of this social housing project in Lyon is a reminiscence of the traditional working spaces of this area with ceiling heights of about 350/400m In order to remind those typical surrounding buildings, two storeys are connected visually into a system of narrow and high windows with wooden shutters The clear and simple repetition of those windows gives the building an "industrial" touch The backyard elevation is completely different with a sculptural system of an open concrete circulation plugged against the building photo: ptk Project is not public! 15 photo: Mohsen Ozlati photo: Mohsen Ozlati Maison de Rodolphe Rue Villon Lyon This project is a new form of housing designed for homeless persons and their pets The buildings are constructed by using a wooden post and beam structure into which 15 m2 factory assembled tri-dimensional boxes are set and connected to the service networks The project includes 3 buildings and an annex : 2 main buildings (A et B), at right angles with the street, and set apart in order to create a central plaza facing out These two buildings regroup the housing units and offices (doctors, social workers, management, and veterinary services ) The C building, a simple ground floor at the center of the lot, houses the common rooms, where single individuals with animals are separated from families who have access to a dining room, and a playroom for children as well Another annex has been set up to house a kennel photo: Mohsen Ozlati Project is not public! 19 photo: ptk photo: ptk Mediatheque Venissieux Avenue Marcel Houël Venissieux This library in the town of Venissieux, outside Lyon, is sited at street level, flush with an adjacent square and open to the town and its surroundings The architects wished to design a glass box with little internal hierarchy, in which all of the functions are brought together on the same level, girdled by a peristyle gallery The gallery opens to a green landscape on one side, and to the town s activities on the other At the heart of this assemblage, the entrance hall is in the form of an urban passageway between the square (to the west) and the courtyard (to the east)the roof is pierced by overhead openings that bring daylight to the interior of the building The offices form an independent entity yet are fluidly connected to the activities of the library The strength of the scheme resides in its simplicity, the ground floor is reserved for the library with the small building for the services, the result being a compact, sun-lit environment photo: ptk Project is public!
