1 PARISH OF CHARDSTOCK 1901 CENSUS RG13/2018 The census was carried out on the night of 31st March, 1901 and followed the format of the previous censuses taken since The head of the household still had to be defined as did the relationship to the head of each person staying in the house that night. The gender of each person was also recorded. Accurate ages were required throughout and were taken from the person s last birthday. For infants under one year, the age was recorded either in months (m), weeks (w) or days (d). The rank, profession or occupation of each person was recorded and Where Born had to be completed by giving the county and town or parish of birth. The expanded list of infirmities introduced in 1871 was retained, but was sometimes used to record medical conditions not included in the official list. The number of rooms occupied by each household had to be recorded if less than five. The 1901 census included a variation concerning Occupational Status introduced in 1891 with revised categories of Employer (Er), Worker (W) or Own Account (OA). Also people working at Home (H) had to be recorded. It should be remembered that in 1896 county boundary changes resulted in the transfer of Chardstock from Dorset to Devon and Wambrook from Dorset to Somerset. An analysis of the recordings for Chardstock is tabled below, together with comparisons for each census since The Boarding School/College (1861 to 1881) and the Industrial school (1861 only) have been extracted from the remainder of the Parish and are shown separately. Five dwellings are recorded in the census as being in multiple occupancy, but examination of the return for two or three room households can provide clues as to other possible households sharing with others. 2 The 1901 return records a further contraction in the population of the Parish. Although the rate was slower than that recorded in 1881 or 1891, it was still significant; being 78 persons or 6.9% of the population. The reduction between 1891 and 1901 only affected people aged below 49 (an 11.6% drop from 882 to 780), because those aged 50 or over actually increased by 9.8% from 244 to 268. Thus the population was both reducing and ageing. The figures for 1901 follow the well established pattern where young adults left the Parish to seek work elsewhere. There were other factors affecting the Parish. In 1901 there was an imbalance between the sexes for the first time (547 females/501 male). The figures for 1891 were 561 female and 565 male, indicating that employment opportunities for males had declined considerably. Also, after discounting those associated with the church or schools, 55 people living in the Parish in 1901 were born outside the adjoining counties of Devon, Dorset and Somerset. Although this figure is small in percentage terms, it is the highest recorded in any census since 1841 and shows that, whilst many people were leaving, there was some movement in the reverse direction. Between 1871 and 1901 the population of the Parish decreased by a quarter and the average age rose from 28 to 32. The effect on each age group is shown below: Age Group Variation Under % 10 to % 20 to % 30 to % 40 to % 50 to % 60 to % Over % Total % The following transcript was made by members of CHRG from copies of the original documents. When extracting information from this transcript, the following points should be noted: Variation in the spelling of names and places is a major problem throughout each census. Many people could neither read nor write, so details were entered by the Enumerator based on what the person said to them. This resulted in many variations in spelling and inconsistencies with other official documents. It would not be possible to list every alternative for each name or place, so, in addition to using word search programmes, researchers are advised to scan through each census visually checking names etc. of interest to them. The Parish of Chardstock was subdivided into three Enumeration Districts Nos. 1, 2 and 3. By 1891 a formerly detached part of the Parish of Chardstock at Crawley had been transferred to the Membury census. These dwellings remained in the Ecclesiastical Parish of Chardstock and are included at the end of the 1901 transcript. The return for each Enumeration District was compiled by a different person and this resulted in a lack of consistency across the complete return. This applied, in particular, to the revised category of Occupational Status, which was clearly still not understood by those completing the return and resulted in many errors and omissions. The tendency to record some forenames by just a capital letter continued throughout the return. Although the overall standard of the census continued to improve, there are still some cases where the return has been incorrectly completed. Notes have been added to correct any obvious errors. 2 The 1901 return required the number of occupied rooms to be recorded if less than five. This is shown in the transcript by the number in brackets after the name or location of the dwelling.

3 For the Relation To Head column relationships are given in full wherever space permits. When it does not, the following abbreviations are used: Dau Daughter StepBro Stepbrother GSon Grandson StepSis Stepsister GDau Granddaughter StepF Stepfather GFather Grandfather StepM Stepmother GMother Grandmother Appren Apprentice SonLaw Son-in-Law Asst Assistant DauLaw Daughter-in-Law Govr Governer MothLaw Mother-in-Law Govs Governess FathLaw Father-in-Law Hkeeper Housekeeper BroLaw Brother-in-Law NMaid Nursemaid SisLaw Sister-in-Law Serv Servant StepDau Stepdaughter Shortening of forenames has been avoided wherever possible with full names being given in the transcription; an exception being Jos, as this could refer to either Joshua or Joseph. Also, full stops have not been used in names, thus Wm. C. Larcombe in the census return appears as William C Larcombe. This measure is designed to assist word search software programmes. By the same logic the town or Parish of birth is given in full, whenever possible. In the transcription the column headed Condition in the census return uses the abbreviations M for Married, S for Single and W for Widow or Widower. In cases where other research has produced an alternative to the transcribed version, that alternative is shown alongside the transcribed version in [ ] brackets provided the alternative has an equal or greater likelihood of being the correct or preferred version. To save space and achieve consistency, the place of birth is given first, followed by the county, indicated by the use of the Chapman County Code system. The 1891 census records the Bonfield, Seaward, Newbery and Watts households living at other properties in Kitbridge Lane, suggesting that in 1901 The Old Workhouse/Victoria Parade may have been occupied by the Summers, Powell and Larcombe households sharing one dwelling and the Keats and Apsey households in the other two.
