1 Facts and Records History of Badminton In 1873, the Duke of Beaufort held a lawn party in his country place, Badminton. A game of Poona was played on that day and became popular among British society s elite. The new party sport became known as the Badminton game. In 1877, the Bath Badminton Club was formed and developed the first official set of rules. The popularity of the sport increased rapidly with 300 clubs being introduced by the 1920 s. Further rising to 9,000 shortly after World War Π. The International Badminton Federation (IBF) was formed in 1934 with 9 founding members, they included: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Denmark, Holland, Canada, New Zealand and France. Badminton was officially granted Olympic status in the 1992 Barcelona Games. From 9 founding members, BWF now have over 150 member countries. The future of Badminton looks bright indeed. Indonesia was a dominant force in the first Olympics, winning gold in each of the four disciplines, the country s first games in history. More than a century after Britain introduced Badminton to the world, Britain acclaimed their first medal in the Olympics with Simon Archer and Jo Goode achieving a Bronze in mixed doubles. More than 1.1 billion people watched the 1992 Olympic Badminton competition on television. Only 3 countries have won the Thomas Cup since it s inception in 1948: Malaysia, Indonesia and China. Only 4 countries have won the Uber Cup since it s inception in 1956: USA, Japan, China and Indonesian. The Badminton player with the longest name is thought to be Channarongratanasaengsuang who won sixteen caps for Thailand in the 1960 s. Subject to confirmation, China s Fu Haifeng holds the record for the world s fastest smash, recording a 206 mph (332 kph) hit during the Sudirman Cup in Beijing. This breaks the previous record of 162 mph (206 kph) held by England s Simon Archer. The first ever-recorded tournament was staged by Guilford BC in It was so successful that BADMINTON England (called the Badminton Association of England back then) followed suit and the following year a one day event was held at the London Scottish Rifles drill hall in London. In this way was born the World s greatest and most famous Badminton tournament, the Yonex All England Open Championships. Badminton players run over a mile in just one match. The record number of All England titles is 21, held by the famous Sir George Thomas. It is said that the best shuttlecocks are made from the feathers from the left wing of a goose. 1
