Message from The President I am most delighted to see that all the activities organized to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association (HKLBA) were finally concluded in a very successful and satisfactory manner. The Golden Jubilee activities commenced in March 2011, the first event was the 14th Tiger Bowls held in March, then the HKFC International Mixed Fours held in April and the China Inter-port in May. Our traditional Premier League and National Championships, including the Ronson Au Mixed Fours and the IRC Invitation Triples took up the gaps between April and October. In November, it came to the centerpiece of our activities and the highlights of our Golden Jubilee celebration. The 2011 World Singles Champion of Champions was played at KBGC and KCC between 6-13 November, with a total of 28 men and 26 women from 30 countries took part in the event. There were some surprising results in the round robin stage when England, Australia, Malaysia and South Africa were not qualified for the knock-out stage and the final standings for this Championships were : Men s Gold - Thomas Greechan of Jersey Silver - Jonathan Ross of Scotland Bronze - Tee Chiak Chia (Singapore) & Keith Jones (Spain) Women s Gold - Jo Edwards of New Zealand Silver - Caroline Brown of Scotland Bronze - Ainie Knight (Philippines) & Alison Merrien (Guernsey) Immediately following the World Singles Champion of Champions was the HKLBA Golden Jubilee International Bowls Mixed Pairs Classic. A total of 66 teams which included one each from all our affiliated Clubs, sixteen from the Champions of the countries who stayed behind and formed a mixed team, three World Bowls Directors teams and seven sponsored teams. They were divided into six groups of eleven teams and played the round-robin which was held in HKCC, IRC, CCC, FC and USRC. The Classic started off smoothly but as was forecast, the weather was a bit unkind to us, fortunately, with the HKFC indoor green, we managed to get through the round-robin stage and the last sixteen went into the knockout stage for their titles. In the last sixteen, we saw nine local teams in it which included HK, HKFC, HKYDT, KBGC, KCC, TMSA and three sponsored teams of GB Open, CJ and Shanghai. The remaining seven teams were World Bowls B, Zambia, Zimbabwe, England, Ireland, Fiji and True Draw. The winners of the last sixteen went into the Cup Section for the grand title where Heron Lau and Shirley Ma of KBGC beat Gary and Lorna Smith of World Bowls B to grab the gold medal. The losers of the last sixteen went into the consolation Plate Section where Natalie Melmore and Steve Mitchinson of England beat Colin and Joanna Nam of CJ to settle themselves the consolation winners. Pacific Championships in Adelaide, Australia, World Cup Indoor Singles in Australia and the Asian Bowls Championships in Malaysia. By the end of 2011, the only medal we saw was a Silver medal brought back by Tammy Tham for the Asia Pacific Indoor Championships. Though we had qualified in the play-offs for four disciplines in the Asia Pacific Championships, but all of them were one game too far from winning a medal, these were the Men s Singles, Men s Pairs, Men s Triples and Women s Pairs. There was a miscarriage of the 2011 Asian Bowls Championships in India. Fortunately, Malaysia decided to take it up to host it in April 2012 and that was where the good news for Hong Kong came from to celebrate our Golden Jubilee. The Women s Fours which consisted of Tammy Tham, Jessie So, Joanna Nam and Alice Lee were invincible and came back with a Gold medal, something Hong Kong had missed for five years. The other five disciplines, the Men s Pairs, Men s Triples, Men s Fours, Women s Singles and Women s Pairs all came home with Bronze medals. A very good achievement by our teams for winning six medals out of 12 participating countries. Youth development continued to be our major target in our Golden Jubilee year in which we had concentrated more on school development. In the school year of 2011/2012, we have engaged with ten schools for demonstrations and HKLBA had produced a total of 500 sets of Soft Bowls for distribution to affiliated Clubs and schools in Hong Kong for demonstration and training purposes. From the response we received so far, we saw a very healthy sign that the quota allocated for the number of sessions we are subsidised for the 2012/2013 school year will be fully utilized. For the successful conclusion of our Golden Jubilee year, my sincere gratitude and appreciation goes towards all the HKLBA Officers, Councillors, Umpires, Coaches, Member Clubs and all players for your co-operation, assistance, dedication, devotion and participation. By uniting all these together, the unity will definitely assure the continued growth and progression of our sport in the future. My congratulations to all the winners tonight for winning the title as a Golden Jubilee Year Winner, a prestige title that not many players can win. To all our sponsors, your contributions have made our events and programmes more manageable and successful. I sincerely hope we will be priviledged to continue to receive your generous support in the future. Thank you and enjoy your evening. Vincent Cheung In our Golden Jubilee year, we continued to send teams to participate in international events like the Japan Open, the MAP Challenge Cup in USA, the Asia Pacific Indoor Bowls Championships in Malaysia, the Asia 2 3

Report by The Hon. Secretary World Singles Champion of Champions 2011 Dear Friends and Fellow Members, The official 2011/2012 year began in September 2011 with our AGM and the uncontested re-election of all 9 Officers. With the completion and opening in November of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department s new bowling green in Tseung Kwan O, we welcomed 4 new member Clubs [ the Tseung Kwan O Bowling Club, the V Star Bowling Club, the Asian Bowling Club and the Wahhar Institute of Sports Company Limited] becoming our 34th to 37th member Clubs. This year was particularly busy as we celebrated our 50th Anniversary activities over and above our regular league and national competitions, international events, special events, fun-days, training courses for bowlers, coaches, umpires, district promotion programmes, the Youth Development programme and the Young Athletes Training Scheme. Designed to better serve our members, our web-site remains very active, with constant updates for the competitions as well as other useful information. Elite bowlers shine at World Singles Champion of Champions In the office, in May we were joined by Elsie Luk, who was recruited on a part-time basis to particularly assist us on our local World Bowls international event and School Programmes. Leona, Howard and Irene continued to work hard to keep up with the office s heavy workload on the routine tasks and the ever changing situations on the competitions and courses. However, it is always very important that we elected officers contribute to the organization and management tasks; as much as possible as sometimes our staffing resources are inadequate to enable us to serve you, our members, the best we can and ensure that our Association s activities run smoothly throughout the year. We received the continued support from our much valued subvention agency the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, without whom our activities would be severely limited, with some success in obtaining their subvention particularly for participating in international events. We also much appreciated the generous sponsorships received from the Zhong Gang Multi-Bowls Club, Pokka Café, True Draw, NONG S, Warren Kwok and donations from youth team coaches and many other coaches and bowlers. The Filipino Club continued with their generous sponsorship for the annual Ronson Au Memorial Mixed Fours competition with the donation of all the entry fees and prize monies. On the International front we sent teams to the Asia Pacific Merdeka Indoor Bowls Championships in Malaysia, the Japan International Open, the Michael Ashton-Philips International Challenge Cup in the United States of America, the Asia Pacific Championships, the China Open, the World Cup [indoors] in Australia and the Asia Bowls in Malaysia. Locally we held the World Singles Champion of Champions, the International Bowls Classic and Tiger Bowls. Sending our teams to these events entails a lot of work by our Association and our appreciation and thanks go to all those who have helped us, especially as team managers, with the arrangements. We also very much appreciated the contribution made by all our volunteer helpers, markers and umpires at our local events. Please all remember that we welcome any assistance from you, all our members, at any time. All in all, we, the Executive Committee have again had a very busy and productive year. Top class bowlers from 30 countries and regions were in Hong Kong from 6 to 13 November 2011 to compete in the World Singles Champion of Champions After the eight days of intensive competition, Thomas Greechan won the first ever bowls gold medal at senior level for Jersey while world number one lady bowler, Jo Edwards from New Zealand, also became the first bowler to win the World Cup Singles and World Singles Champion of Champions titles in the same year. Organised by World Bowls, the event involves the men and women singles champions of World Bowls member countries. Despite the late withdrawal of Malawi and India, a total of 28 men and 26 women representing 30 countries, or regions, took part in this prestigious tournament. being hosted in Asia in its eight year s history, said World Bowls Chief Executive Gary Smith at the opening ceremony, World Bowls, as the governing body for the sport of bowls, is proud and delighted to bring this major event in the international bowls calendar to Hong Kong. Being a strong supporter of World Bowls, Hong Kong s previous experience in successfully organising the World Cup and World Junior Cup gave us great confidence that this tournament will be another success. The participants faced stringent tests on their adaptability to the versatile Hong Kong weather throughout the competition. While they all enjoyed the beautiful sunshine with comfortable breeze in the first few days, the weather turned rainy from the third day onward. It was lucky that the weather returned to the normal winter sunshine in the finals. Greechan qualified for the playoff as the second runners-up in his And so in closing, congratulations to all our last year's Winners and to the Losers, keep trying as this may be your year to be a Winner. Wishing you all in all respects, a great 2012/2013 year. Hong Kong was represented by Li Ming Sum and Grace Chu, who both won the National Singles and Champion of Champions singles last year. Stephanie Chung This is the first time the event is 4 5

group. He beat Huzaimi Mohd Salleh (Brunei) in the play-off and Tee Chiak Chia (Singapore) in the semi-finals. The final between the Greechan and Scotland's Jonathan Ross was a tight affair. Ross held the upperhand in the first set and won it 9:7. In the second set, Greechan took four shots in the last three ends to force the match into a tie-break. Edwards confidently addressed her Scottish rival Caroline Brown in the finals and once again prove that she really is the world's best female bowler. She took the first set 11:5 in a casual manner. Brown fought back and won the second set 8:3. In the tie-breaker, Edwards displayed the highest level of skills, combining some delicate drawings and precise resting shots, to take the first two ends. Caroline tried to recover but was a bit too little and too late. The tie-breaker finished 4:1 to Jo's favour. Hong Kong s Li Ming Sum finished 10th in the overall ranking for men, which had 28 players. Grace Chu finished a disappointing 16th out of 26 participants. Final Results: Mens Gold medal Silver medal Bronze medal Womens Gold medal Silver medal Bronze medal Thomas Greechan (Jersey) Jonathan Ross (Scotland) Tee Chiak Chia (Singapore) Keith Jones (Spain) Jo Edwards (New Zealand) Caroline Brown (Scotland) Ainie Knight (Philippines) Alison Merrien (Guernsey) In the three ends tie-breaker, Greechan won a shot in the first set. In the second set, he trailed the jack with his last bowl to hold four in that end. Ross tried to draw but under pressure he put a little too much weight on this last bowl and it fell directly into the ditch. Greechan won the tie-break 5:0 to become the champion. In the ladies section, Jo Edwards displayed a strong determination to win the competition right from the beginning. She rolled her way through the ranks of the world s best bowlers, winning 10 of the 12 round-robin games losing only to Singapore and Hong Kong, to progress as the top of the group. 6 7

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS IS JUST CHAMPION!... History was made in November, 2011, when the WBL staged their C of C at KBGC and KCC as part of HKLBA s 50th anniversary celebrations - and the event was a rich tapestry of countries, cultures and characters that made everything so richly worthwhile. If the scrabble-board of initials leaves you in the dark, please allow me to translate the 2011 World Bowls Limited Champion of Champions event was played at the Kowloon Bowling Green Club and the Kowloon Cricket Club to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association. As expected, the hosts (HKLBA in their very special year) ran a great tournament, and the visiting officials from World Bowls and the media - were very impressed. There was a tremendous atmosphere, with old friendships being renewed and new ones being forged. I like the Champion of Champions because it s different! Unlike other events, the players are not selected because their faces fit they turn up because, as national champions, they have actually earned the right to compete on the world stage. The BIG NAMES of our sport may or may not - be there. Inevitably, some of them are, but the great thing is, every member of a club that is affiliated to World Bowls has a chance to qualify for the World Champion of Champions by winning his or her national title. But first, of course, you have to enter your national singles championship. This year, above all others, democracy ruled in the C of C, with countries who would not normally figure at the top of the leagues sitting proudly and prettily in pole positions throughout the round robin - and even at the knockout stage. And I, for one, found that refreshing? Thus, Jersey, Spain, Singapore, Guernsey and the Philippines all got among the medals - and Brunei and Holland were only a whisker away from stepping on to the podium. Would you Adam-and-Eve it? And, while we re at it, let me assure you that in describing those countries as minnows of our sport I intend no disrespect indeed, quite the opposite! By contrast, the Big Fish of our sport - England, Australia, Malaysia and South Africa - were nowhere, and it was only Scotland, who were tipped for double gold, but had to settle for silver in men s and women s events, and New Zealand who came up trumps by winning medals. As in the Commonwealth Games, and, more recently, the Atlantic championships, the competitors were divided into two equal groups and, after a protracted round robin, the top three qualified for the knockout stage, with the league leaders going straight into separate semi finals. We understand that s the way things will be from now on it is the format expected to be used at World Bowls in Adelaide in November, The reward for winning the group is therefore to be guaranteed a medal, because both losing semi finalists bag bronze, while the second and third in both groups go into an open draw to contest the two vacant semi final places. In the men s event, it was Jonathan Ross, the long-time Irish international, who now plays for Scotland, and the Singaporean Tee Chiak Chia who topped their groups, and went on to face Spain s Keith Jones and Jersey s Thomas Greechan, respectively, in the semi finals. In the quarter finals (I know there are only two of them, but what else can you call them?) Jones, who played county cricket for Middlesex before settling in Spain, did well to defeat the 2010 England champion Steve Mitchinson in straight sets, 10-5, 8-4, while Greechan cruised past Brunei s Huzaimi Muhammed Salleh, 10-4, In the semi finals, the 69-year-old ex-cricketer defeated Ross, the World Bowls Tour number nine, on a tiebreak, 9-4, 8-9, 5-0, and Greechan needed a tiebreak to get past Tee Chiak Chia, 6-8, 9-7, 5-1. Ross, a popular figure in Hong Kong, where he has previously won the Classic pairs, was hotly tipped to beat Greechan in the final in which, incidentally, a Glaswegian (Greechan was born in Glasgow) was representing Jersey, and an Irishman (Ross was born in Belfast) was carrying Scottish hopes. Winning the first set more comfortably than the 9-7 scoreline suggests, Ross was almost literally knocked out of his stride in the second set, when Greechan, a 35-year-old postman, delivered some accurate attacking bowls and an audacious take-out for a full house on the second end of the tiebreak saw the talented Channel Islander home, 7-9, 8-5, 5-0. The six players in the knockout stage of the women s event included Jo Edwards, from New Zealand and Scotland s Caroline Brown but the other four were from Guernsey, Jersey, Singapore and the Philippines. Yes, Singapore qualified in both men s and women s categories! The diminutive Filipina Ainie Knight had qualified ahead of Brown in the group, but the Scot got past Singaporean Shermeen Lim, 11-2, 8-4, and Guernsey s Alison Merrien, who won this title in 2007, beat her fellow Channel Islander Karina Bisson, from Jersey, 7-6, 11-6, in the other quarter final. Merrien looked home and dry against Edwards, an old adversary, in the semi finals, but was outplayed in the tiebreak as the Kiwi struck for home, 3-10, 8-7, 6-0. Meanwhile, Brown, in good form, defeated Knight, 11-6, 9-8, to book her place in the final. Slow to start in the final, Brown eventually found her touch, and went into the tiebreak with the momentum behind her but Edwards, ranked number one in the world, was a worthy winner, the 11-5, 3-8, 4-1 scoreline telling the story pretty effectively. 7 DRJ LOVES HONG KONG I have been visiting Hong Kong on a regular basis since 1996, when I first experienced the thrill of your vibrant city, and immediately realised what I had been missing for the first 54 years of my life. Gordon Dunwoodie, a genial (most of the time) Scot, who was a smooth operator when it came to reporting on bowls from all over the world, had paved the way for my arrival. An experienced and talented journalist, he had been attending the Classic almost from the start of the event. and had been singing Hong Kong s praises for many years Why don t you come to Hong Kong this year? he would ask me, and I would usually find an excuse not to make the trip too busy, clashes with other things, family commitments. But one day it occurred to me that it would be good to see Hong Kong before it was handed back to the Chinese and became a Special Administrative Region. So I took the plunge in Since then, I have never made any excuses not to come. Indeed, I have invariably taken any excuse on offer to enjoy a spell in Hong Kong, with its very special atmosphere, bustling streets, wide range of eating places, quaint markets, helpful people and excellent transport system. I love the hubbub of the city, and the tranquillity of the outlying islands, and the way, in such a busy place, there are so many opportunities to get away from it all, and chill out. Most especially, I enjoy trips to the Wetlands Centre, and the nature reserves near the border with Mainland China, and to hopping over to Lamma or Cheung Chau for a walk and a meal. And all that s without a mention of the bowls. Ah the bowls! Whether it s at Kowloon Bowling Green Club, Kowloon Cricket Club, Craigengower Cricket Club or Hong Kong Football Club or any of the other bowls clubs, bowls is thriving in a way that makes the rest of the world mighty jealous. When I paid my first visit to Hong Kong, the sport was run by Gwilos, who referred to the place as a British Colony. I suppose it was an accurate description, but one that I found rather condescending. Bowls, of course, is a very British sport or so they say. A bit like football, cricket or golf, invented by the Brits, but exported to the rest of the world initially via the British Commonwealth. Those sports have without exception been enthusiastically adopted by other nations, who are regularly (and infuriatingly) beating the Brits at their own games. Let s be honest, bowls in Hong Kong owes a lot to those who colonised the place in the nineteenth century, and without whose influence, the sport would not exist here at all. But, bowls has not just survived the departure of the ex-pat Brits and Aussies, it has gained in strength and vitality since it has been taken over by the natives. Since 1996, I have watched the process with interest and admiration, and I was astonished to see some of the pictures in the HKLBA 50th Anniversary magazine. The pictures provide evidence that, onceupon-a-time, not so long ago, the stiff-upper-lip, dickie-bird-watching HKLBA Board members were almost exclusively Gwilos. Now, in stark contrast, there is hardly a Gwilo to be seen. But, despite the gloomy predictions, bowls has not died, it has thrived. There are now more bowlers and more bowls clubs in Hong Kong than ever before. I have watched bowls all over the world, and it is my opinion that the degree of educated attention paid by spectators at the Classic finals is probably greater than anywhere else in the world. On some of my more recent visits, I have met some gloom-merchants, who have told me, Things aren t what they used to be in the good old days! - Standards have dropped! The game played today is not a patch on what it was in the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies! Don t believe them! While more and more people are taking up the sport, while more clubs are being formed, and while the HKYDT production line continues to turn out young talent, bowls in Hong Kong is healthy and well blessed. There is quantity AND quality in Hong Kong. The earliest record I could find of international success for Hong Kong was the silver medal gained at the Commonwealth Games in Vancouver in 1954, when a talented quartet of Jose A da Luz, Alfred E Coates, Robert S Gourlay and Raoul F E da Luz struck silver in the fours. Sixteen years later, in 1970, another distinguished Hong Kong team Clementi Cecil Delgado, Abdul Rahem Kitchell, Roberto E da Silva and George A Souza (father of George Souza junior, whom I was pleased to meet once again on my most recent visit to Hong Kong in 2011) won the gold medal at the Games at the Sighthill club in Edinburgh. They were in good company! England legend David Bryant won the singles, and the English duo Norman King and Peter Line won the pairs. Then, when the Games returned to Canada in 1978, Hong Kong bowlers experienced their finest hour, striking gold in pairs and fours. It was C C Delgado and Eric Liddell who won the former, and Philip Chok, Majid Bin Hassan, Roberto E da Silva and Omar Kachong Dallah who lifted the latter. Later, I became quite friendly with MB, who came to live in England for a while. He joined my club, Clevedon, and played alongside the likes of David Bryant, Pip Branfield and myself. And I remember quite clearly meeting OK at Worthing, after I had been invited to become part of the BBC bowls commentary team. During the famous Kodak Masters Jack High tournament, which was being covered by the BBC, he took us all out one evening to a local Chinese Restaurant and introduced us players, officials and media people - to the delights of Chinese cuisine. The Kodak Masters Jack High, to which eight world stars were invited each year, was sometimes referred to as, The David Bryant Benefit Show, because the great man won it nine times in the 12 years it was played. But the abiding memory for me was the time that George Souza junior defeated Bryant in the final in the most bizarre circumstances. The format in those days was 21-up, and the score in the final stood at 18-18, when it started to hail. Huge golf-balls thundered down from the sky, and the players scurried from the green, which turned white in no time at all. It was most surreal because, after all, it was mid-summer! We wondered if they would have to share the title, and the prize money, but, after a break of maybe 30 minutes, George and David returned to the rink, where George scored the three shots he needed to win the title on the very next end. But back to the Commonwealth Games History was made in Edinburgh, at the Balgreen club this time, in 1986, when three members of the same Hong Kong family played in the Games, one of whom, Mark McMahon, was only 16. The others, of course, were Mark s mum and dad, Rosemary and Bill. But there were no medals for Hong Kong that year. However, in 1990, when the bowls was staged at the Pakuranga club in Auckland, there was a medal, and 10 11

it was Mark who won it, when he reached the final of the singles, and lost with honour to the swashbuckling Australian, Rob Parrella. Hong Kong s women also brought a bronze medal back in the fours thanks to Sau Ling Chau, Yee Lai Lee, Natividad Naty Rozario and Jenny Wallis. Mark, of course, moved on, and, like his fellow Hong Kong star Noel Kennedy (the Bandanna Man), cut a dash on the world stage at World Bowls Tour events, the two adding colour to the sport at the highest level. Now that they have both retired from the professional circuit, they are sadly missed. Hong Kong, of course, said farewell to the Commonwealth in 1997, and made its last appearance in the Commonwealth Games in Victoria (Canada) in 1994, when Jenny s husband Ken Wallis made it special by bagging bronze in the singles. The men s world outdoor championships did not start until 1966, and the women s followed suit in But Hong Kong made its mark in the second men s World Bowls, which was staged in 1972 in Beach House Park in Worthing where C C Delgado, A R Kitchell, Roberto da Silva and George Souza senior were supposed to be strutting their stuff in the fours. Unfortunately, George Souza was unable to make the trip, and his place was taken by a young Osman Oscar Adem, who played his part in lifting a bronze medal. As it happens, Hong Kong women won their first world medal in Worthing, but that was five years later, in 1977, when Helen Wong and Elvie Chok collected the gold medal in the pairs. In 1980, in Frankston, near Melbourne, George Souza junior, Eric Liddell, O K Dallah and M.B. Hassan junior became world fours champions, an achievement that my friend David Bryant remembers vividly he won the singles and triples that year! But perhaps 1981 was the most successful year for Hong Kong, with the women grabbing three medals at Women s World Bowls in Willowdale in Toronto (Canada), Linda King, Rae O Donnell and Lena Sadick winning the triples, Rae O Donnell, Linda King, Joan Humphreys and Lena Sadick earning silver in the fours, and Helen Wong bagging bronze in the singles. Silver in the triples for Sandi Zakoske, Rae O Donnell and Helen Wong in Australia in 1985, was followed in 1988 by bronze for Naty Rozario, Rae O Donnell and Sandi Zakoske in Henderson. No medals in men s or women s World Bowls since 1988, so perhaps there may be some logic in those who say, Things are not what they used to be! But medals are not everything and I sense a resurgence in bowls in Hong Kong, where the sport is healthier than almost anywhere else in the world. You have so much going for you on and off the green: your keen and skilful youngsters promise much for the future; and your well-organised administration, with so many wise people at its head, means the HKLBA is in good hands. The initiative shown by the HKLBA in creating the Classic shows that you are at the forefront of the movers and shakers in the bowls world the Classic has not only made such an impression on the visiting players, but also brought world-class players to Hong Kong to inspire a love and deep understanding of the sport among the people who live here. I wish to thank the HKLBA for their hospitality in the past, and for the friendships I have been fortunate to develop. Hong Kong has quickly become one of my very favourite places. I look forward to my next visit. David Rhys Jones HKLBA Golden Jubilee International Bowls Mixed Pairs Classic 2011 In what was the most-watched lawn bowls tournament in Hong Kong this year, Shirley Ma and Heron Lau of the Kowloon Bowling Green Club came out the victors of the International Bowls Classic in The special mixed pairs edition of the annual Classic tournament, held to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association, was the brainchild of Vincent Cheung, long time President of the Association. After the 5 days long group stage, seven local teams remained in the final 16, including Hong Kong s own national team, four bowling clubs, namely Hong Kong Football Club, Kowloon Bowling Green Club, Kowloon Cricket Club, Tuen Mun Sports Association and two sponsored teams, CJ of Tseung Kwan O and Shanghai. The remainders were made up of national and sponsored teams from all corners of the world Australia, England, Fiji, Ireland, Zambia, Zimbabwe, GB Open, True Draw and World Bowls. Shirley and Heron first dispatched local archrivals Asia Pacific medalists Pat Lai and Camilla Leung from the Hong Kong Football Club. They went on to beat Hong Kong's Alice Lee and Li Ming Sum en route to the semi-final. The Hong Kong Team had earlier ousted Australia which included local youth player Angel So as lead. The KBGC combo sustained their efforts to defeat Ireland in the semi-final, who had earlier beat True Draw s Kelsey Cottrell and Aaron Sherriff in the quarterfinals. On the other side of the draw the World Bowls couple Gary Smith and wife Lorna first prevailed over Shanghai, comprising local couple Danna and Tony Chiu, before defeating sponsored team GB Open s Hong Kong International Peggy Ma combining with Ryan Bester. The Smiths next beat Zambia to face KBGC in the final. Earlier in the round of 16, Tuen Mun s Joanne Leung and Jason Li were narrowly beaten by Zambia; while another African country Zimbabwe had the upper hand of Kowloon Cricket Club s Linda Robertson and Andy Daws. In the consolation Plate section, CJ, which stood for staunch supporters of Hong Kong bowling Colin and Joanna Nam, after suffering from a comprehensive defeat by True Draw in the round of 16, bounced back to first beat Fiji, then Australia to make the Plate final, only to be defeated by one of the early winning favourites England s 2010 Commonwealth Games singles champion Natalie Melmore and her partner Steven Mitchinson. Before he became a bowls writer and broadcaster, David Rhys Jones was an international player, who represented both England and Wales. He also partnered the legendary David Bryant to ten England titles. Once known as the Voice of Bowls for his commentaries on BBC TV, he is now bowls correspondent to The Times newspaper, and contributes a Without Bias column to Bowls International magazine. Here, he explains what Hong Kong (and the HKLBA) means to him

lead to 10:1 after five ends. Well over 1,000 spectators came to the Craigengower Cricket Club on the finals day on Sunday to witness the birth of the champions. While the bowlers were giving their best to reach for the laurels, numerous rounds of applause were given for the competitors efforts. In the final match alone, spectators were treated to some awesome bowling in the dramatic fight between two veteran internationals in the World Bowls team and Hong Kong s own bowlers from KBGC. After dropping one shot in the opening end, the KBGC team wasted no time to capture the lead in the next end when Shirley played a beautiful backhand weighted shot taking World Bowls 2nd shot out to make 6:1, before extending their But the Smiths were no paper tigers. The World Bowls couple struck back in the sixth end with one shot via a narrow wick. One might call that luck, but they rode on the momentum to take 10 shots in the next two ends to reverse the scoreboard to 12:10. Not panicking, the local team staged a spectacular come-back. After drawing level in the ninth end, they found themselves in hot water again in the tenth end. They were 6 down before Shirley played their last two bowls. The first one wicked in a side bowl to turn the head to their favour; the second one was well drawn to double it up to 2 shots. Lorna failed to retrieve the head. The percentage shots of Shirley called by her skip continued to pay off in the next ends and stretched the margin to with three ends left. In the twelfth end, Shirley s magic touch struck again when she played a stunning shot to lift the jack into the air and send it, with a bit of luck, spot on to Heron s awaiting bowls to get a shot and then drawing another for 2. World Bowls pulled two ends back but it was not enough to turn the table. KBGC won the championship by 19:14. In this special year of the HKLBA, Shirley and Heron created history to be the first Classic winners donning KBGC shirts. Congratulations again to Shirley and Heron, to Kowloon Bowling Green Club and to the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association for a successful Mixed Pairs Classic in its 50th anniversary.
