2 INTRO LETTER Dear Friends, 2017 was a year of many challenges for Brazil. Following two years of economic recession and political uncertainty, the nonprofit sector experienced many difficulties as government investments in social programs and philanthropic donations declined. In this challenging scenario for the Brazilian social sector, we felt it necessary to increase our efforts in promoting philanthropy and the culture of giving among Brazilians, engaging new publics, while also increasing investment in the capacity of our grantees. We launched the {Abrace o Brasil} campaign in collaboration with 100 organizations, mobilizing donors across 13 countries, we joined forces with ABCR to provide training in fundraising for 2 ANNUAL REPORT 2017

3 INTRO LETTER 55 organizations, and with a grant from Fundação Itaú Social we committed to investing in core support for ten organizations that promote education and entrepreneurship. Most of all, 2017 was a year when our donors inspired us. From the courageous journey of two frenchmen who sailed across the Atlantic to raise funds for Brazilian youth, to the children that held bake sales for the Abrace campaign, we were reminded that no challenge is greater than the human spirit. We extend our deepest gratitude to all who contributed to our work, making 2017 an important year for philanthropy in Brazil. We hope to count on you to make 2018 even better! 5 A YEAR IN REVIEW BETTER LEGISLATION FOR BRAZIL We celebrated a historical accomplishment for philanthropy in Brazil as Rio de Janeiro s State Legislative Assembly approved the donation tax exemption for non-profits. We are grateful to FUNPERJ and Paulo Haus for leading this important effort on behalf of all non-profits in Rio, and hope other Brazilian states will follow the example to enable the sector to thrive. 9 A YEAR IN REVIEW ABRACE O BRASIL In a global movement of giving, thousands of people embraced 100 causes in Brazil through the {Abrace o Brasil} campaign.
