2 Guest Artist John Abberger John Abberger, one of North America s leading performers on historical oboes, is principal oboist with Tafelmusik. He has performed extensively in North America, Europe and the Far East, and appears regularly with other prominent period-instrument ensembles, including the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, the Washington Bach Consort, the Portland Baroque Orchestra, Ensemble Voltaire, the Handel and Haydn Society, and Boston Baroque. He is also the artistic director of the Toronto Bach Festival, an organization dedicated to exploring the music of J.S. Bach and its context using historically accurate performing forces. His recording of the Concerto for Oboe by Alessandro Marcello with Tafelmusik was glowingly reviewed by Gramophone Magazine as one of the best there is and alone worth the price of the disc, even if you have other versions. In addition to many recordings with Tafelmusik and other period instrument ensembles, he has directed, recorded, and produced two discs for the ANALEKTA label, both devoted to the instrumental music of J.S. Bach. Mr. Abberger serves on the faculty at the University of Toronto, the University of Western Ontario, and the Royal Conservatory in Toronto. A native of Orlando, Florida, he received his training at the Juilliard School, and Louisiana State University. RECITATIVO (S, bc) Gott ist mir ja nichts schludig, und wenn er mir was gibt, so zeigt er mir, daß er mich liebt; ich kann mir nichts bei ihm verdienen, denn was ich tu, ist meine Pflicht. Ja! wenn mein Tun gleich noch so gut geschienen, so hab ich doch nichts Rechtes ausgericht. Doch ist der Mensch so ungeduldig, daß er sich oft betrübt, wenn ihm der liebe Gotte nicht überflüssig gibt. Hat er uns nicht so lange Zeit umsonst ernähret und gekleidt und will uns einsten seliglich in seine Herrlichkeit erhöhn? Es ist genug vor mich, daß ich nicht hungrig darf zu Bette gehn. God indeed owes me nothing, and when He gives me something, He shows me that He loves me; I can earn nothing for myself from Him, for what I do is my duty. Yes! even if my deeds appear to be good, I have nevertheless set nothing right at all. Yet man is so impatient, that he is often troubled if dear God does not give to him in abundance. Has He not for such a long time nevertheless fed and clothed us, and will one day raise us blessedly in His glory? It us enough for me, that I need not go hungry to bed. 5

A calm conscience, a joyful spirit at thankful heart, glorifies and praises, increases blessings, sweetens distress. 4. RECITATIVO (S, bc) Im Schweiße meines Angesichts will ich indes mein Brot genießen, und wenn mein Lebenslauf mein lebensabend wird beschließen, so teilt mir Gott den Groschen aus, da steht der Himmel drauf. O! wenn ich diese Gabe zu meinem Gnadenlohne habe, so brauch ich weiter nichts. In the sweat of my brow I will meanwhile enjoy my bread, and when the course of my life my life s evening will come to a close, then God will hand out the pennies to me, and heaven will stand open. Oh! if I have this gift as my reward of grace, then I need nothing more. 5.
