1 Notes on Contributors MARGUÉRITE CORPORAAL is Associate Professor in English Literature at Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands. She was the principal investigator of the research project Relocated Remembrance: The Great Famine in Irish (Diaspora) Fiction, , for which she obtained a Starting Grant from the European Research Council ( ). She is the author of Relocated Memories: The Great Famine in Irish and Diaspora Fiction, (2017). She is co-editor of Recollecting Hunger: An Anthology. Cultural Memories of the Great Famine in Irish Fiction, (2012), Global Legacies of the Great Irish Famine (2014), and Irish Studies and the Dynamics of Memory (2016). STEF CRAPS is an Associate Professor of English literature at Ghent University, where he directs the Cultural Memory Studies Initiative. He is the author of Postcolonial Witnessing: Trauma Out of Bounds (Palgrave Macmillan, 2013) and Trauma and Ethics in the Novels of Graham Swift: No Short-Cuts to Salvation (Sussex Academic Press, 2005). He has also co-edited Memory Unbound: Tracing the Dynamics of Memory Studies (Berghahn, 2017) and special issues of Criticism (2011) and Studies in the Novel (2008) on the topics of transcultural negotiations of Holocaust memory and postcolonial trauma novels. GRAHAM DAWSON is Professor of Historical Cultural Studies and Director of the Centre for Research in Memory, Narrative and Histories at the University of Brighton, England. He is author of Soldier Heroes: British Adventure, Empire and the Imagining of Masculinities (1994), and Making Peace with the Past? Memory, Trauma and the Irish Troubles (2007); and co-editor of Trauma and Life Stories (1999), The Politics of War Memory and Commemoration (2000), Contested Spaces: Sites, Representations and Histories of Conflict (2007), and The Northern Ireland Troubles in Britain: Impacts, Engagements, Legacies and Memories (2017). FIONNUALA DILLANE, lecturer in Victorian literature and culture, School of English Drama and Film, University College Dublin, has research interests in the fields of nineteenth-century print cultures, memory studies, and gender studies. ASTRID ERLL is Professor of Anglophone Literatures and Cultures at Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main and the initiator of the Frankfurt Memory Studies Platform ( com). She holds degrees in English, German and psychology from the University of Gießen (Germany). Publications include monographs on memories of the First World War (Gedächtnisromane, 2003) and the Indian Mutiny (2007), and an introduction to memory studies (Memory in Culture, Palgrave 2011). With A. Nuenning she is general editor of the series Media and Cultural Memory (de Gruyter, since 2004) and co-editor of A Companion to Cultural Memory Studies (2010). With A. Rigney she edited Mediation, Remediation and the Dynamics of Cultural Memory (2009). OONA FRAWLEY is a native New Yorker, received her PhD from the Graduate School and University Center, and held post-doctoral fellowships at Queen s University Belfast and Trinity College Dublin. She has lectured in English at Maynooth University since Oona is the author of Irish Pastoral: Nature and Nostalgia in 20 th Century Irish Literature, and edited the 4-volume Memory Ireland project (Syracuse University Press, ), among other books. Her debut novel Flight (Tramp Press, 2014) was nominated for an Irish Book Award, and led to her being named one of the stars of post-crash Irish fiction by the Guardian. ÚNA KAVANAGH is a figurative artist whose work crosses the boundaries of many art forms including sculpture, performance, text, painting, film, installation, and animation. Úna holds a BA and MA from The National College Of Art & Design in Craft Design and Sculpture. For over twenty-five years she has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout Ireland including The Royal Hibernian Academy Annual Exhibition, Sculpture In Context, and RDS Craft Exhibition, where she received The Royal Dublin Society Decorative and Architectural Ceramics Certificate Of Merit. Most recently she has created the performance artwork Fata Morgana in Liwa and Mirari a collection of paintings and film exhibiting in the Art Hub, Abu Dhabi, UAE. KATHRYN KIRKPATRICK is Professor of English at Appalachian State University where she also serves as editor of the eco-journal Cold Mountain Review. She is the author of six collections of poetry, most recently two recipients of the North Carolina Poetry Society s Brockman-Campbell award, Our Held Animal Breath (2012), and Her Small Hands Were Not Beautiful (2014). As a literary scholar in Irish studies and the environmental humanities, she has published essays on class trauma, eco-feminist poetics, and animal studies. She is the editor of Border Crossings: Irish Women Writers and National Identities (2000), and with Borbála Faragó, Animals in Irish Literature and Culture (2015). STEFANIE LEHNER is Lecturer in Irish Literature at Queen s University, Belfast, and Fellow at the Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice. Her current research explores the role of the arts, specifically performance, in conflict transformation processes, with a focus on the Northern Irish context. She also researches and teaches on representations of trauma and memory in (Northern) Irish drama, fiction, film, and photography. She is author of Subaltern Ethics in Contemporary Scottish and Irish Literature (2011) and her work has been published in Contemporary Theatre Review, Irish Review, Irish Studies Review, and Nordic Irish Studies. JOSEPH LENNON is the Emily C. Riley Director of the Center for Irish Studies and Associate Dean of International and Interdisciplinary Initiatives at Villanova University. His book, Irish Orientalism: A Literary and Intellectual History (Syracuse UP, 2004), won the Donald Murphy Prize from the American Conference for Irish Studies. He has published articles on literature and cultural history in journals such as New Hibernia Review, Women s Studies, The European Legacy, and The Times Literary Supplement, as well as chapters in books on British, Irish, and Indian literature and culture. Salmon Poetry published his volume of poems, Fell Hunger, in 2011, and his current book project focuses on the beginnings of the modern hunger strike in the early twentieth century in England, Ireland, and India. LOUISE LOWE is a theatre maker, creating site-specific and immersive art works within communities of space, place, and interest. Since founding ANU in 2009, Louise has directed all of the company s productions to date, including the multi-award nominated and xi

CLAIRE LYNCH is a Reader in English Literature at Brunel University London and Secretary of the British Association of Irish Studies. She is the author of two monographs, Irish Autobiography (Peter Lang, 2009) and Cyber Ireland: Text, Image, Culture (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014) and several articles on twentieth and twenty-first century Irish Writing. NAOMI McAREAVEY is Lecturer in Renaissance Literature in UCD School of English, Drama and Film, and has published widely on the literary cultures of the 1641 rebellion, and especially women s writing. With Fionnuala Dillane and Emilie Pine she has co-edited The Body in Pain in Irish Literature and Culture (Palgrave, 2016), and is co-editor, with Julie Eckerle, of Women s Life Writing and Early Modern Ireland (University of Nebraska Press, 2017). She is author of The Letters of the First Duchess of Ormonde (forthcoming with the Renaissance English Text Society), and is currently developing a book project on the memory cultures of the 1641 rebellion in Ulster. PAULA McFETRIDGE has been Artistic Director of Belfast-based Kabosh since August The company is committed to challenging the notion of what theatre is, where it takes place and who it is for ( She was the recipient of the Belfast Ambassador Award 2014 for her work in using the arts to tackle difficult social issues and the NITB NI Hero Award 2012 for her work in cultural tourism. 5 NOTES ON CONTRIBUTORS CHARLOTTE McIVOR is a Lecturer in Drama and Theatre Studies at the National University of Ireland, Galway. She is the author of Migration and Performance in Contemporary Ireland: Towards A New Interculturalism, and the co-editor of Staging Intercultural Ireland: Plays and Practitioner Perspectives (with Matthew Spangler), and Devised Performance in Irish Theatre: Histories and Contemporary Practice (with Siobhán O Gorman). She has published in Modern Drama, Irish University Review, Irish Studies Review, and multiple edited volumes on contemporary theatre and performance. PAULA MEEHAN was born in Dublin where she still lives. A playwright and poet, she has received many awards for her work. She was Ireland Professor of Poetry, A volume of her public lectures from the Professorship Imaginary Bonnets with Real Bees in Them was published in 2016 by UCD Press. Geomantic, her latest collection of poems, was published by Dedalus Press, Dublin in November VUKASIN NEDELJKOVIC is a PhD candidate at Dublin Institute of Technology. He initiated the multidisciplinary project Asylum Archive. Asylum Archive is a platform open for dialogue and discussion inclusive to individuals who have experienced a sense of sociological/geographical displacement, social trauma, and violence. It is an act of solidarity to bring a different perspective on the life of people who came to Ireland to seek protection. Asylum Archive s objective is to collaborate with asylum seekers, artists, academics, civil society activists, and immigration lawyers, amongst others, with a view to creating an interactive documentary cross-platform online resource, critically foregrounding accounts of exile, displacement, trauma and memory. ANN RIGNEY is Professor of Comparative Literature at Utrecht University and founder of the Utrecht Forum for Memory Studies ( She has published widely in the field of nineteenth and twentieth century memory cultures, including most recently The Afterlives of Walter Scott: Memory on the Move (Oxford UP, 2012). She is co-editor of Mediation, Remediation, and the Dynamics of Cultural Memory (De Gruyter 2009; with A. Erll), Commemorating Writers in Nineteenth-Century Europe (Palgrave, 2014; with J. Leerssen) and Transnational Memory: Circulation, Articulation, and Scales (De Gruyter, 2014; with C. De Cesari). She has recently started a new project on cultural memory and protest movements. xiii

6 IRISH UNIVERSITY REVIEW DOMINIC THORPE is an Irish visual artist working primarily through the body in performance, drawing, video and photography. His work often involves contextual and relational processes. In 2014/15 he was the first artist in residence at the College of Arts and Celtic Studies of University College Dublin where he researched relationships between memory, trauma and processes of performance art. He has shown and performed work widely internationally and in Ireland, including at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Bangkok Cultural Centre, Xiamen University China, SASA Gallery Adelaide, Temple Bar Gallery and Galway Arts Centre. He currently works at the Creative Well, Riverbank Arts Centre Newbridge and KCAT Arts Centre Kilkenny. xiv
