8 Notes on Contributors Editors Wolfram Pyta is Professor of Modern History at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. He has published widely on European and German history, from the Seven Years War to the history of the Bundesliga. In 2008 he was awarded the Landesforschungspreis für Grundlagenforschung des Landes Baden-Württemberg (State Research Prize for Basic Research of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg). He is a leading member of the FREE consortium responsible for Football and Collective Memory. Nils Havemann is a Research Fellow in the Department of Modern History at the University of Stuttgart. His main research interests focus on the history of sports, economic history and the history of the German Empire. Contributors Seweryn Dmowski recently completed a doctorate on the contemporary political history of Poland at the Faculty of Journalism and Political Science, University of Warsaw, Poland. His research focuses on the interrelations between football, contemporary politics and modern society. He is founder of and co-lecturer on two monograph-based courses on football for students at the University of Warsaw. Borja García-García is Lecturer in Sport Policy and Management at Loughborough University, UK. He teaches modules on sport management and sport governance at Loughborough s School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences. His main research interests are the study of European Union sports policy and the governance of professional sport. He has published extensively in international peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of European Public Policy and the Journal of European Integration. He has also co-edited a collective book on the transformation of European football. He is one of the leading members of the FREE Project consortium. Michael Groll is Professor of Sport Management and Sport Politics at the FHM University of Applied Sciences in Cologne. He has held management positions in sports marketing and editorial positions in sport viii

9 Notes on Contributors ix business journalism. He received his doctoral degree in 2004 for a work on transnational sport politics. Geoff Hare, now retired, was formerly Head of School of Modern Languages at Newcastle University, UK. He has published extensively on sport and the media and on the history of sport in France, including Football in France (2003, edited with H. Dauncey) and The Tour de France, (2003). His main current research interest is the influence of James Gordon Bennett Jr. on sport and sports journalism in Europe. Markwart Herzog is Director of the Swabian Academy of Irsee, Germany. He received his PhD in philosophy in His research interests include football during the Nazi era and the history of women s football. He is a founding member of the German Academy for Football & Culture, Nuremberg. Clemens Kech studied English Literature, Linguistics, and History at Connecticut College, USA and the University of Stuttgart, Germany, from which he graduated in 2012 with a thesis entitled The Heysel Stadium Disaster and its Symbolic Value in Europe s Collective Memory. Ramón Llopis Goig is Associate Professor in Sociology at the University of Valencia, Spain, where he teaches sociology of sport as well as social research methods. His research interests include gender issues, national identity, mass media, consumption and globalisation in sport, with a particular emphasis on football. He has published a collection of papers on the globalisation of football in Europe and Latin America entitled Postnational Football (2009) as well as numerous articles about the sociology of sport in both mainstream and specialist journals. Agustín Martín is a staff writer at Spanish sports newspaper Diario AS, where he has been working in different capacities for more than a decade. He is a specialist in Spanish football history. Jean Christophe Meyer teaches at the University of Strasbourg, France. His PhD thesis was entitled Television Broadcast Football and its Reception by the Press in France and Germany ( ): The Completion of the Great Stadium, a Conveyor of National and European Identity. His current research interests are focused on the history of French television, the history of German sports journalism and the history of Franco-German relations. Jürgen Mittag is Head of the Institute for European Sport Development and Leisure Studies at the German Sport University Cologne, Germany.

10 x Notes on Contributors He earned his PhD from the University of Cologne in Since then, he has held positions at the University of Cologne and Ruhr-University Bochum. David Ranc is Assistant Professor in European Studies at the Department of International Relations, École Supérieure des Sciences Commerciales d Angers (ESSCA), France. He holds a PhD in International Studies from the University of Cambridge, UK. His doctoral thesis has been published by Manchester University Press under the title Foreign Players and Football Supporters. Tobias Werron is Lecturer/Assistant Professor at the University of Lucerne, Switzerland. He has written on globalisation and world society theory, media sociology and the sociology of sport. He is currently working on a book on the sociology of competition. His recent publications include On Public Forms of Competition, Cultural Studies Critical Methodologies and Wie ist Globalisierung möglich? ( What Makes Globalisation Possible? ), Kölner Zeitschrift für Soziologie und Sozialpsychologie (together with Bettina Heintz).
