1 ADRODDIAD BLYNYDDOL / ANNUAL REPORT MAXWELL FRASER BEQUEST & TREFIN ARCHDDERWYDD CYMRU BEQUEST The late Maxwell Fraser (Mrs Edgar Phillips), Slough, Berkshire. A brief description of this bequest appeared in last year's Annual Report. It consists of the manuscripts and papers of Maxwell Fraser ( ), authoress and travel writer, and of her husband, Edgar Phillips (`Trefin', ), to be known at the testator's request as the `Maxwell Fraser Bequest' and the `Trefin Archdderwydd Cymru Bequest'. The `Maxwell Fraser Bequest' is by far the larger group and contains correspondence ; diaries with detailed entries, , and a journal of a tour of Poland in 1930; drafts and typescripts of books, articles, and broadcast scripts; notes and material relating to the testator's researches in connection with these works including a large group relating to Lord and Lady Llanover and the Hall family ; circulars, newsletters and correspondence relating to the many societies of which the testator was a member (the Cambrian Archaeological Association, the International Arthurian Society, Kilvert Society, Offa's Dyke Association, P.E.N., Sherlock Holmes Society of London and other societies which reflect her interest in literature, history and archaeology, music and Celtic matters). There is a substantial amount of correspondence (letters received and copies of replies), much of it connected with the preparation of the testator's many books, articles and guides, and with her work preparing publicity material for the Great Western Railway and British Railways (Western Region) (including Holiday Haunts, ). The greater part is arranged in chronological order but some has been retained in files relating to particular books (mainly concerning Wales), to her research concerning the Hall family, and to the societies of which she was a member. The small group of papers relating to her parents contains letters from the testator including some written from Sweden in From 1948 the correspondence is largely relating to Wales and there is a wide range of Welsh correspondents. There is also a small but interesting group of letters to the testator's uncle Lovat Fraser ( ), the prominent journalist and author of India under Curzon and after (1911). It includes letters from Lord Curzon, Lord Fisher, Lord French (with two letters from W. W. Asquith to Sir John French in 1914), Lord Northcliffe, Earl Roberts and Lord Rothermere. (Maxwell Fraser Bequest). The `Trefin Archdderwydd Cymru Bequest' is a much smaller group of manuscripts, papers and letters. It contains poetry and prose compositions ; a few sermons and adjudications by Trefin ; notes relating to Welsh literature and history and to prominent Monmouthshire men, in particular research relating to Aneurin Jones (`Aneurin Fardd', ) and Edmund Jones ( ); letters relating mainly to the period but including a group of letters of congratulation on his winning the chair at the Wrexham National Eisteddfod in 1933; letters, scrapbooks and other papers relating to the National Eisteddfod, the Gorsedd of Bards and the Cornish Gorsedd; diaries containing very few entries, 1940, , , ; notes and letters relating to his family, including the Bateman family of co. Pembroke; and Trefin's reminiscences (in Welsh) with an English translation. The obituaries and tributes published after Trefin's death have been placed with the biographical material together with the letters of sympathy and related correspondence received by his widow, the correspondence relating to his biography by Brinley Richards: Cofiant Trefin (1963), and an English translation in manuscript of the biography. A large collection of items, including line engravings, wood engravings, coloured aquatints, coloured lithograph, a pencil-and-wash drawing and a watercolour, mainly of places in Wales, particularly Pembrokeshire, mainly mid-19th century, an invitation card, 1841, some verses by W. Williams (Caledfryn), 1821, atlases, 20th-century, maps, plans and monographs, 17th-19th and 20th-century, and five photograph albums, early 20th-century (Dept of Pictures and Maps). CANADIAN CENTRE FOR FOLK CULTURE STUDIES The Canadian Centre for Folk Culture Studies, National Museums Canada, Ottawa, Canada. A copy of the Glenys James collection of tapes in the Canadian Centre for Folk Culture Studies, recorded on minute audio cassettes, mainly by Glenys James in 1974 (Dept of Pictures and Maps). It comprises interviews in Welsh and English concerning life in Canada, Patagonia and Wales, Welsh songs and recitations in Welsh, by over 70 contributors, mostly of Welsh origin. GEOFFREY CHARLES Mr Geoffrey Charles, Lampeter. The donor allowed the Library to record a conversation with him regarding the film `Yr Etifeddiaeth' (1947) (Dept of Pictures and Maps). Mr Charles has presented a copy of the film and the original negative. CHARLES CHARMAN Mr Charles Charman, Denbigh. A file of correspondence, , supplementing NLW MS 20610E (see Annual Report , p. 26), between the donor as chairman of the Publishers' Section of the Union of Welsh Publishers and Booksellers, and Welsh M.Ps., the Welsh Books Council, and the Welsh Arts Council, concerning grants for publishing Welsh books for adults and for schools, the Gittins Report, 1968, and the memorandum sent to the Secretary of State by the Welsh Joint Education Committee, which referred to the setting up of a printing press and publishing unit to produce Welsh books for schools (NLW MS 21709E). Diaries of the donor, in an almost unbroken sequence from 1906 to 1979, including details of the time she and her late husband, Rev William Evans, spent in Madagascar as missionaries, ; together with notes of talks, accounts of visits and journeys, letters and some newspaper cuttings. The Library already holds a copy of Mrs. Evans' autobiography (NLW Facsimiles 219). The diaries are not to be consulted for 30 years after date of composition. The donor allowed the Library to record a conversation with her concerning her experiences as a missionary in Madagascar and her diaries. An uncompleted thesis by the donor on the treatise by Siôn Dafydd Rhys on early British history `Traethawd Siôn Dafydd Rhys ar Wiredd Hanes Sieffre o Fynwy', including a typescript transcript of the text from Peniarth MS 118, pp (NLW MSS E). GRENVILLE FRANCIS Mr Grenville Francis, Aberystwyth. Mr. Francis has kindly allowed the Library to photocopy the following material (NLW Facsimiles 375-7) : two account books, , of Henry Francis ( ), a mine agent in the Marazion area of Cornwall; the Francis family history compiled by the donor's grandfather, Henry Francis, who was surveyor, accountant and agent of several Cardiganshire mining ventures between 1870 and 1920; a photograph, taken at the wedding of the donor's parents, which also features Henry Francis and the family register of Arminius Burgess of Yeadon, co. Edgar Gevaert ( ) was an artist and one of the Flemish refugees who came to Wales during the First World War. He was later very active in the international peace movement associated with Lord Davies.
