2 HOME ABOUT TOPIC SEMINARS PROJECTS MOMENTS CAMPUS PIACENZA WS ABOUT The Advanced School of Architecture (ASA) of the Politecnico di Milano is an "additional" training programme that is held at the same time as the Master of Science. Its aim is to increase and develop the professional profile of architect-designers. It does so through design and planning activities that make future architect-designers experience the complexity of the phenomena currently taking place in and out of Europe. In this sense it is an "experimental teaching structure" open to talented young students (32 per year) who are selected according to their academic curriculum and the average mark achieved in exams during the Bachelor of Science or the first three years of single-cycle, five-year degrees. The advanced school is an "Itinerant School" that is held in the various campuses depending on the integrated programmes offered. ASA is aimed mainly at students enrolled in the Schools of Architecture and Society,

The two-year programme is divided into 4 teachingexperimental courses which will be held as part of theme/ application-oriented and characterized Workshops, according to specific disciplines that complete each other: architecture of open spaces (in Piacenza), heritage recovery and protection, construction and the use of advanced technologies The workshops, which are organized on two levels (theoretical and practical), offer experience based on the participation in daily planning laboratories and integrated with conferences, scientific meetings and forums.

IT S A GREAT OCCASION TO IMPROVE INTERNATIONAL VOCATION AND TO TEST AN INNOVATIVE AND HIGH- LEVEL TEACHING EXPERIENCE.

8 TOPIC TOWARD A NEW LANDSCAPE PIACENZA WS about LANDSCAPES AND STRATEGIES Contemporary landscape is a complex text, packed with interfering elements which appear as overlapping areas of land with multiple sections capable of revealing sequences of the periods that have affected it. Piacenza and its territory is an interesting field of study because it lies in a varied and heterogeneous region, in which four different types of inhabited landscape meet: agricultural, natural, infrastructural and urban ones. These elements make it an emblematic case that opens up new conceptual horizons for design: - Processes of urban regeneration, able to modernize buildings and landscapes, - Renovation of abandoned spaces, - Reuse of infrastructural landscapes, - Recycling of resources which are still usable. The integration of four landscapes allows us to grasp a new dynamic and relational vision of space, with a view to the recovery and conscious transformation of our urban heritage.

9 TOPIC TOWARD A NEW LANDSCAPE PIACENZA WS about AGRICULTURE, AMONG TRADITIONAL AND INNOVATIVE TYPES Among different landscapes overlapping and interacting, agriculture can be interpreted as a key-factor. The urban agriculture is currently envisaged as an agriculture of proximity, highly technified but, at the same time, organic and biological, a sort of new economy branch that is attractive to urban youngsters. Many different kinds of urban agricultures are being tested in our cities, from the kitchen gardens to the allotment gardens, the communal orchards or the rural belts. This new sensitivity puts the food cycle in the center of the interests of architects. The three pillars of this cycle are production, distribution and consumption. How to integrate them in the city is a challenge for the contemporary architecture and city planning. This one is specially thrilling in the case of Piacenza, center of one of the most prosperous agricultural regions in Europe, site of a very rich traditional cuisine and headquarter of the best restaurants in Italy.

10 PIACENZA WS TOPIC TOWARD A NEW LANDSCAPE ASA workshop s main aim is the integration, in the urban fabric of Piacenza, of the physical expression of the three pillars of the food cycle : production (with urban orchards and agro-parks), distribution (with markets consisting of moving devices) and exhibition (with new research and knowledge spaces).

12 PIACENZA WS TOPIC 3 SCENES SCENE 1_ REDISCOVERED PATHS The construction of recognizable and exploratory paths within the Piacenza productive landscape, able to determine the identity of a place, to explore its developments in order to discover the main ecosystems, the multiple landscapes, and its biodiversity. Identify places, understanding it structural characters, environments, and the multiple systems that determinate it s balance Cross natural boundaries, limits, edges, thresholds in order to recognize characters of variation in the sequence of a continuous landscape. Recognizing the different speeds that enunciate the diversity of the times of the landscape, from the fast of the crossing experience to the slow of the environmental exploration.

PIACENZA WS PROTOTYPE_ MOBILE GARDEN DEVICES MICRO-CANTIERI VEGETALI L obiettivo specifico del workshop ASA (Advanced School of Architecture), parallelo alla 6a edizione della Summer School OC-OPEN CITY, è lo sviluppo architettonico e di dettaglio di una serie di modelli / prototipi. Tali elementi si configurano come pezzi di paesaggio e come tali dovranno essere pensati e progettati, nelle loro interazioni con le scale locali e sovralocali, urbane e territoriali. Dovranno quindi essere capaci di diventare tasselli della dinamica del ciclo del cibo, come descritto nella pagina precedente, sviluppando rapporti con I luoghi della produzione, della distribuzione e del consumo. Proprio nell ottica di massimizzare queste interazioni, gli elementi potranno essere mobili, spostabili, quindi adatti a diverse localizzazioni e a diverse situazioni urbane o extra-urbane.

30 SEMINARS CATHERINE MOSBACH PIACENZA WS Landscape architect and theorist, she s involved in the design of multiscale parks and gardens, always taking position in the architectural international debate. Her approach is based both in her studies in the école nationale supérieure du paysage de Versailles and in école pratique des hautes études en sciences sociales. 31 PIACENZA WS SEMINARS João Nunes_ PROAP Architect based in Lisbon. General coordinator of PROAP, responsible for the strategic, executive and tactical leadership of the three international offices: Lisbon (Portugal), Luanda (Angola) and Treviso (Italy). Develops PROAP s conceptual and creative design and defines the strategic orientation of the research processes. João Nunes teaches at the same Institute where he graduated, the Instituto Superior de Agronomia da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, he is professor of Environmental Project at the Degree in Landscape, Urban and Environmental Planning from the Universitá degli Studi di Sassari, Facoltà di Architectura di Alghero, he is professor at the Graduate Course of Architecture Landscape Architecture at the IUAV, Universitá di Venezia, and extended his didactic activity as a lecturer in seminaries at various schools. Since January 2013, PROAP began a strategic partnership with the Chinese group Tengtou, based in Ningbo and main office in Shanghai, China. The group is composed of Landscape Architects, Architects, Engineers and Artists.

32 PIACENZA WS SEMINARS MARTI FRANCH Graduate in Landscape Architecture at the University of Greenwich, London. In 1999 he founded his own office EMF Landscape Architecture based in Girona, Spain. From 2001 he is professor of different courses at the Escuela Tecnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona with Jordi Bellmunt. He is lecturer of international conferences about the topics of urbanism and landscape.

33 PIACENZA WS SEMINARS JORDI BELLMUNT From 1980 is professor at ETSAB (Escuela Tecnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona) and from 1982 is professor of the department of Urbanism and Urban Planning. From 2000 is director of the Master in Landscape Architecture and form 1997 to 2006 was sub-director of ETSAB and from 2000 to 2006 was director of the Degree course in Landscape. He is part of the scientific committee of different magazines specialized in Landscape Arquitecture He organizes five European Biennial of Landscape Barcelona (1999, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2008). Advisor to the City of Barcelona (Montjuïc Natura Committee), he is member of the Governing Council of the Landscape Observatory of Catalonia and advisor to the Office of the landscape College of Architects of Catalunya. From 1980 is visiting professor in different university of the world and he is part of the scientific committee of the Master in Landscape at the University of Reggio Calabria and Catania.

34 PIACENZA WS SEMINARS JUAN MANUEL PALERM SALAZAR Juan Manuel Palerm Salazar holds a PhD in Architecture and is Professor of Architectural Design at the School of Architecture of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. He participated in the European programmes Erasmus and Tempus Phare and he currently lectures at the Laboratory of Landscape Architecture at the Institute of Architecture of the University of Venice. He has been a guest lecturer at Spanish and international universities. In 1986 he founded the studio Palerm Tabares de Nava Arquitectos in partnership with Leopoldo Tabares de Nava y Marín. Since 1986 they have developed architecture, city planning and landscape projects in the Canary lands and internationally in the United States, Italy and Spain.

35 PIACENZA WS SEMINARS VICTOR YBERN TENEZ Graduated in Architecture at the Higher Technical School of Barcelona. Professor at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), where he taught urban design, landscape design and landscape theory. He works regularly in several European Masters, and directs the "Taller de los espacios del agua" in the Master of Landscape Architecture at the Polytechnic Foundation of the UPC-Barcelona. It also coordinates the courses of Urban Planning and Environment in the European Postgraduate Masters in Urbanism at its headquarters in Barcelona. He was a visiting professor in several European and American universities. With his group practice with offices in Barcelona, Copenhagen and Graz received awards and commendations for the preparation of plans and projects, including the plan for the Olympic Village for the candidacy of Graz and the development project south of Copenhagen, Orestaden.

41 PIACENZA WS CAMPUS Piacenza Campus of Politecnico di Milano hosts the threeyear Architecture Design course and the Architecture Master course Sustainable Architecture and Landscape Design. The academic curriculum of the first three years aims at training designers with a specific sensitivity to environmental architecture issues while the two final years are devoted to sustainable design and landscape projects. The creation of International workshops oriented to the design the open spaces in different scales of intervention, from landscape transformation to public areas and specific architectural components is a new important initiative in postgraduate studies with an international scope. The workshop aims at maintaining an open dialogue among the different design specialties needed to face the problems arising from architectural, urban and environmental transformations, becoming a discussion forum and a brainstorming workshop where issues on the general development perspectives of contemporary habitats can be discussed.

42 PIACENZA WS CAMPUS Piacenza is the ideal venue for an initiative focused on architectural, urban and environmental problems, both for the quality of its landscape, artistic and monumental environment and for the wide range of case-studies, as well as for its solid traditions in the building sector. Located in the fascinating buildings and pavilions of the former slaughterhouse, the workshop tens of students, tutors and teachers coming from different parts of the world, gathering to discuss issues of architectural, urban and environmental design.
