Phone: Teaching experience and related activities Currently, I am a Instructor at the University of Colorado, Denver. In the Fall semester of 2016, I am teaching Calculus III (multivariable), Mathematics for the Liberal Arts, and Introduction to Abstract Mathematics. Recently, I was a Postdoctoral Scholar and later a Teaching Assistant Professor at the University of Denver (DU), Colorado. There I taught the following courses: Calculus I (Fall 2013, Fall 2014), Calculus II (Winter 2014, Winter 2015), Multivarible Calculus (Fall 2013, Spring 2014, Spring 2015), Calculus for Business and the Social Sciences (Fall 2015, Winter 2016, Spring 2016) and a Foundations Seminar on Ramsey Theory (Winter 2016). I taught for more than 10 years in the main university of Venezuela and two years in one of the best universities of Colombia; graduate and undergraduate courses of Linear, Commutative and Abstract Algebra, Numerical Analysis, Differential Equations, Set Theory, Ramsey Theory, Mathematical Logic, Topology, Topological Dynamics, Number Theory, Partial Differential Equations, Calculus, Multivariable Calculus and Analysis. I have taught one-semester and quarter-long classes of varied sizes for graduate and undergraduate students of Mathematics, Business, prospective Computer Scientists, Engineers, Administrators, Physicists, Chemists, Biologists, among others. Besides lecturing to students, my responsibilities have included preparing the syllabus, curricula development, course design, supervising Teaching Assistants, and off course grading homework and exams. I have been supervisor for six undergraduate students, one PhD student and two graduate students in the Master s program (these have been distance supervisions

4 4 JOSÉ G. MIJARES of Master s theses). All of them succesfully completed their programs. One of them will defend her Master s thesis in May You will find more information about my role as supervisor at the end of this CV. I would like to mention that during the Winter Quater of 2016 at the University of Denver, I taught a Foundations Seminar which I titled Mathematics of Coloring (after the book by A. Soifer, but the content of my seminar is presented in a way intended to be friendly for a general audience). It is a gentle introduction to Ramsey Theory and its applications for undergraduate students with majors other than Mathematics. It has been a wonderful project which has given me a good measure of the scope and limits of this field when exposed to a general audience. With the data collected and the experience gained from this course I started to write a book intended for the same audience. Other teaching-related skills: I am well-versed in Webassign, Blackboard, Canvas, Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. I also have experience using Adobe Connect. Other teaching-related experiences: When I worked at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, in Bogota, Colombia (September 2011 August 2013), I actively participated in departmental recruiting activities, consisting of meetings with prospective math students and presentations about mathematics as a career and its possibilities in the job martket, the mission of this particular mathematics department and diverse mathematical topics, emphasizing their connection with reallife problems. In my years at the Universidad Central de Venezuela, I actively participated in curriculum development activities, especially in the areas of Elementary Geometry, Algebra, Fundamentals of Mathematics and Logic. Also, I served as course coordinator for Calculus I and II, and was member of departmental graduate and undergraduate committees. I had the great opportunity to be a supervisor of the Community Service Program for Students, in the Central University of Venezuela ( ). In that program, we helped students to serve as instructors in poor communities, in schools for children and youngsters with drug abuse problems and in homeless shelters. During the Winter quarter of 2015, I had the beautiful opportunity to have a hard of hearing student in my Calculus class. She needed a visuallycentered approach to her learning, and the aid of a special (professional) note-taker. It was a very rewarding experience to be able to provide her with the required accommodations in my own classroom. I also received her frequently during office hours. That experience made me realize that I can do much more as a teacher, serving a more diverse student body, being conscious of using the teaching experience as an opportunity to help develop our awarness of the need of inclusion and equity in the community and our capacity to become agents of positive change in this respect.
