In Chicago, two towers have been proposed for the South Loop. The planned Ice District building has grown from 62 to 66 stories, and will reach a height of 251 meters. Meanwhile, Vancouver continues to grow its impressive skyline with a number of new proposals. Japanese architect Kengo Kuma has designed a sleek carved tower for 1550 Alberni Street, with a form that has sweeping reductions in volume along its height. The 56-story, 268-meter skyscraper features diagrid cladding and contains both offices and a hotel. The change in programming between office and hotel space is expressed on the exterior by an angled indentation on one side of the tower. Under the new rules, a plot ratio limits the height of a building to 24 times the size of plot. The new dictum went into effect on Australia 108, Melbourne. Finally, Chinese developer Greenland Group has submitted plans for Hertsmere House, a 67-story residential skyscraper for West India Quay in Canary Wharf. If built as planned, it is expected to hold the record as the tallest all-residential tower in western Europe. Another record-breaker is entering the final stage of construction, more than 100 years after its foundation was laid. La Sagrada Família in Barcelona, will be the tallest religious building in Europe; though entering the final stage of construction, it is still not expected to complete until at least Somewhat ironically, Spain is not only home to one of the longest-running construction projects in modern history, but also a cutting-edge technical facility operated by ThyssenKrupp. The elevator firm recently unveiled a 1:3 scale model of the MULTI elevator system at its Elevator Innovation Center in Gijón. MULTI comprises a linear system of self-propelled elevator cars that can efficiently travel in both vertical and horizontal directions. Middle East and Africa Dubai continues to be the most prolific tall building center in the Middle East. A pair of 47-story high-rises featuring hotel and apartment space was proposed along Sheikh Zayed Road. The Rosemont Hotel & Residences will include an artificial beach and landscaping inspired by the rainforest. Additionally, preliminary designs for Burj 2020 were revealed at an international conference. The project is still veiled in mystery partially because official height statistics have not been released but evidence suggests that it could reach up to 700 meters, making it one of the tallest structures in the city and the world. More superlatives can be found at the One at Palm Jumeirah, which is under construction and due to be completed by The luxury condominium building is now home to the city s most expensive penthouse, which is listed on the market for US$74.5 million. Perhaps because it is home to more of the world s tallest buildings than any other, Dubai also made news for an innovative high-rise firefighting scheme. The city s civil defense authority has purchased 20 jetpacks to be used during high-rise fires. On a smaller scale, a proposed redevelopment in Tel Aviv would dramatically alter the Kikar Atarim site, an underutilized public square on prime real estate near the beach and a main thoroughfare. The plan includes the demolition of the square and the addition of three high-rises containing hotels and residences.
