2 Museum of n ure Ahtri Tallinn The Museum of n ure was established on January 1st 1991 Its aims are collecting, preserving, study, interpreting and exhibiting n architecture As many of architectural museums in the world the Museum of n ure is collecting the materials of 20th century architecture mainly 1908 Ernst Boustedt 2

3 photo: Eesti Arhitektide Liit photo: Eesti Arhitektide Liit Freedom Square Harju Tallinn Freedom Square (n: Vabaduse väljak) is a plaza on the southern end of the Old Town in It is bounded on the east by St John's Church (built ), on the south by Kaarli Boulevard and an underground shopping center (2008?09), and on the west by a Victory Column (2009) commemorating the n War of Independence The current design was created by architects Tiit Trummal, Veljo Kaasik and Andres Alver It has an area of 7752 m² with the dimensions approx 110 m by 75 m During the Soviet period, Freedom Square was known as the Victory Square 2009 Tiit Trummal, Andres Alver & Veljo Kaasik 3

5 Metro Plaza Viru Väljak Tallinn The Metro Plaza business centre is in Tallinn's old town, a UNESCO world heritage site, but based in a modern building that reflects the vibrant business growth of 's capital Tallinn is home to leading IT, electronics, manufacturing and telecoms companies, supported by research and development organisations like Tallinn University of Technology and the Innovative Manufacturing Engineering Systems Competence Centre NATO cyber security centre is based here, making Tallinn a safe place to do business New transport routes are opening up through Tallinn Airport, within easy reach of the Metro Plaza business centre, and Tallinn is the fastest growing seaport in the Eastern Baltic The centre is close to the harbour and is in walking distance of nearby Toompea hill, home to 's Parliament building and several foreign embassies photo: Jaanus Silla Floor area/size m² KOKO s 5

6 photo: Kaido Haagen photo: Kaido Haagen KUMU A Weizenbergi Tallinn The competition for the new Art Museum of (KUnstiMUseum, or KUMU for short) began in 1994, in the golden age of West European museum construction In a Europe where national borders had become blurred, cities competed with one another for mediagenic public works projects Compared with this superstar architecture, KUMU is definitely in a different class Pekka Vapaavuori's architecture represents a kind of modernism founded on tradition, not sensation Rammed right into a limestone bank, the complex appears to be circular, with the building itself forming only a small section Most of the building is of n limestone, the other two dominant façade materials being patinated copper and milky glass Via the gigantic forecourt of zigzagging ramps, KUMU is reached only after a long and gradual descent This unhurried atmosphere continues inside the building, where the metaphor of a circle turned in on itself is perfect and cloistered isolation from the world is realized photo: Kaido Haagen 2005 Client Pekka Vapaavuori Kunstimuuseumi Ehituse Sihtasutus Triin_Ojari May - Sept Tue-Sun Oct - April Wed-Sun

8 photo: Arne Maasik photo: Arne Maasik Koidula Street Apartment Building L Koidula Tallinn 3+1 s prove that the suburban dream can be realized down town, too Their apartment building is located in an old neighbourhood, right next to the city centre of Tallinn The complex consists of two parts: a building with six apartments dating from the late 19th-century historicist period, joined to a new three-storey building, which projects into the yard - one of the complex's most valuable assets The building is innovative for its typological variety Each of the ten apartments has a different floor plan and there are several duplexes The façades display a similar differentiation The glazed stairwells visible behind the façade on the garden side, boldly cut through the private sphere and convey a sense of openness, while the street façade, clad with Aluzinc, creates a more closed impression and echoes the folds of the roof forms The project offers the qualities of a detached house, such as privacy and spatial variety, just a 5 minute tram ride from the city centre photo: Arne Maasik Project is not public! 2005 Landscape designer Client 3+1 s Atelier le Balto Private Triin_Ojari 8

9 photo: Arne Maasik photo: Arne Maasik Fahle House Tartu maantee 84A Tallinn In the United States, the phenomenon of revamped industrial buildings began some decades ago, when the new middle-class became tired of suburban life and started to move back to the city centres 'Loft living' became the new lifestyle and a successful real-estate product Today, this is happening in The Fahle Building, a former paper factory perched on one of the highest points in Tallinn, has become the city's first large-scale example of industrial rebirth It has restaurants, office spaces and now, towering over all this, a new glass box with apartments The objective is clear: to emphasize the imposing factory building by adding a new layer to this landmark, a fashion statement in the form of a sexy glass building overlooking the city The 14-storey structure does not try to blend in or to hide its modern appearance It is a fitting apotheosis for what was, until recently, a heap of crumbling limestone walls 2007 Client KOKO s Koger & Partners photo: Arne Maasik Triin_Ojari The Fahle Building is public, the newly added apartments are not 9

10 Apartment Building Aiamaja Vana-Viru Tallinn The 5-story apartment building is situated on the edge of the medieval old town of TallinnIt is not dominant from the street level, nor does it seem too high in the surrounding context The dynamic mass of the building is situated in the northern and western side of the plot In connection with some old historically valuable buildings, it creates an environment of small interconnected units, characteristic to the architectural whole of the old town Every apartment has a large terrace, bringing private house typology into the very center of the city The ground level opens to the street as an active shopping space The construction of the building is a combination of reinforced concrete and steel frames The non-supporting walls are finished with natural stone tiles, making thebuilding visually smaller, while alluding to the surrounding stone houses of the old townthe timber-clad terraces and the horizontal surfaces of the overhangs link the apartment block to the neighboring wooden Floor area/size m² KOSMOS 10

11 Carpenter's Workshop Mere Puiestee Tallinn The building at Roseni 7 is located in Tallinn's Rotermann Quarter, and was originally built as a carpenter s workshop The function of the building changed during the Soviet era and a third, silicate brick storey was partially erected on top of the structure The first and second storey of the building feature aesthetically valuable brick arches, while the metal supporting beams have collapsed and need restoration Floor area/size m² KOKO s 11

13 Rotermanni Old and New Flour Storage Rotermanni Tallinn The 1,5 century-old Rotermann Quarter, a former industrial area for food production, is located between the Tallinn's old town and the port, where stands still historically-valuable limestone buildings under heritage protection The approved detail planning calls for adoptive re-use of existing buildings as well as insertion of new volumes amongst to create 'live-work' city right at the center of Tallinn with people-friendly environment of entirely car-free, accommodating 400 parking lots underground On-going redevelopment takes place among historical limestone buildings, including the Old Flour Storage from 1904 The New Flour Storage was asked to form a plaza as a new focal point of the quarter The project consists of three volumes; the Old Flour Storage with 2 additional stories, the New Flour Storage and the Atrium connecting the two Ground floor is for retail and all upstairs are for offices 2009 Hayashi - Grossschmidt Arhitektuur 13

15 Rotermann Quarter Mere puiestee Tallinn The Rotermann quarter is a former industrial landscape of a valuable and unique milieu in the center of Tallinn The new buildings have been designed not to form one large monotonous volume This project offers four distinct apartment houses with different typologies Pedestrian streets between the buildings end up in a square elevated in the level of the first floor and open the square for the sunlight The first two floors, both accessible from the street and the lifted square, are commercial areas The department store, being partly under the square, is illuminated by a glazed hole in the middle of the townsquare The hole with a bottom on the ground floor is also a garden to a chestnut-tree The four buildings have been designed so that apartments of similar size in all of the houses became sufficiently different The views, the position of the flats on different floors, relationship with the surrounding space, configuration of the plan, different levels etc 2009 KOSMOS 15

16 photo: Tiit Veermäe photo: Tiit Veermäe 4 Rävala Ave Rävala Puiestee Tallinn At the beginning of Ravala Avenue, in the heart of Tallinn's new city centre, stands a mixed-use commercial building with an eye-catching cantilever Together with the adjacent 23-storey City Plaza office building it forms a pleasant ensemble complete with shops, a car park, restaurant and many other elements of contemporary inner-city development They symbolize the freedom to celebrate the triumph of private capital and the freedom to transform the Soviet-style communal city into its diametric opposite, a completely privatized city City Plaza and the new commercial complex fill an entire block and are Alver Trummal's largest urban projects to date The two meticulously designed buildings form a classic composition of a high-rise building with a lower horizontal block ure is sometimes described in terms of the strong physical reactions it evokes, and indeed, walking onto the forecourt, one feels the weight of the cantilever above with one's entire body photo: Tiit Veermäe 2006 Client Alver s Norber Group Triin_Ojari 16
