1 ARCH 3500 Third Year Architectural Design Studio V Fall 2006 Writing of Architecture: Fernando Brave & Christian Sheridan, Robert Burrows, John Clegg, Gary Eades, Jason Logan, Mark Schatz, William Truitt, Andrew Vrana Celeste Williams William Truitt Architectural Design Studio 3500 Syllabus Description Prerequisites: ARCH 2501 A broad view of the complexities of architectural design including issues related to research, programming, context, site, spatial organization, structure, environmental systems and tectonics. In addition, the studio will address the student s verbal, writing, graphic and critical thinking skills. Course Objectives The studio will focus on the study of architecture at three scales- urban, building, and envelope. Within each of these, the student will research information as an integral component of an architectural concept. A rigorous pursuit of the making of architecture through model and drawing is required at each of these scales. The study of fundamental architectural topics will help assimilate the broad set of issues that must be considered when designing a building. Topics include threshold/entry, hierarchy, scale, and sequence of spaces. A conceptual and thorough examination of structure, material, and environmental systems is critical to an assimilated design process. Each studio will meet the basic requirements set forth by the Undergraduate Committee and NAAB, described in the attached memorandum. Evaluation and Grading The studio requires of each student a disciplined approach toward the self critical act of design. A vital component for success in this course is each student s commitment to working through progressive physical studies toward the development of the architectural idea. Design projects will be graded on the due date. No late work will be accepted. Grading percentages and descriptions are listed below: 20% Project - City/ Site/Building. 35% Project - Building/Plan/Section 35% Project - Structure/ Envelope/ Systems/ Synthesis 10% Writing exercise A B C D F Exceptional and courageous work, taking risks beyond what is expected or required. Above average, solid work, beyond what is required. Acceptable response to the problem Unsatisfactory work Inability to demonstrate an understanding of the problem. This is not the same as incomplete work. General Conditions Class Participation is essential. The studio environment will encourage individual inquiry into issues of the project and assist in developing your process for resolving those issues. For this reason, all work shall be done in the studio. Attendance for the full class period is required at all class meetings. Work on other courses during studio will result in an absence being recorded. Students who accumulate 5 unexcused absences will be dropped from the class. Students who do not attend the first day of studio may lose their place in the class. Although a prerequisite for an active engagement with other students and faculty, class attendance does not constitute participation in the studio. No project will be accepted that has not been reviewed in its preliminary stages through desk crits, pin ups, and reviews. It shall be the responsibility of each student to be available during studio hours and to have sufficient work completed to receive criticism. Students who do not work through earlier criticism to develop their projects will not receive further criticism. Professional quality digital documentation is required throughout the semester. Documentation of models and drawings will be due one week after the due date for each project. Late documentation will result in a letter grade drop for the project. Failure to submit professional quality documentation will result in failure for the project. Research is critical to the development of each project. Students will use research as the basis for design decision making. Precedents, projects and architects mentioned in studio must be researched before the next class period. The internet provides valuable initial information from which to begin research. As such, it does not constitute research. No radios are allowed in the studio at any time unless headphones are used. No radios, headphones, personal e- mail and instant messaging devices are to be used during class. Talking on cellular phones in the studio is strictly forbidden at anytime, day or night. These are disruptive to the communal studio environment. Writing Writing component to include discussion of the site analysis, site design and development of a building type. Diagrams should be integral with each text. The writing assignment is 6 pages in length, per presentation guidelines to be distributed by Prof. Williams.

Through analysis (site), research (precedent + structure + material) and design, this project will examine the way in which architectural space frames surfaces for actions. Critical attention will be paid to the relationship of performance and public space at multiple scales. While these issues are separated in phases during the semester, students are encouraged to re-evaluate completed work as well as introduce tectonic and material exploration early in the semester. The role/ perception of the Public within these components must be addressed through fundamental architectural issues, including: threshold/ entry, hierarchy of actions, scale, and sequence of spaces. Tectonic exploration of structure, material, and environmental systems give critical definition to the creation of space, and must be considered integral to the conceptual design process. Fundamental sustainable issues should be addressed at each scale- inherent in any exploration of site, public space, as well as the development of systems. Each studio will develop analysis topics addressing the changing face of public and civic space, as well as the scales and uses of neighborhood buildings. Research is critical at this phase to understand basic ways in which architects see and draw the urban landscape and the relevance of the context to the theater as a building type. 1.1 Urban Analysis/ Documentation Analysis work during this phase of the semester to be team based and team presented. The separate studios will determine the definition and work of each team. Minimum Requirements Class Site Plan (city) 1 =50 or greater Class Site Plan 1/16 =1-0 Class Site Model 1/8 =1-0 Site/ Street elevations 1/16 =1-0 Site Section 1/16 = Precedent Studies Students will study existing theater projects- their type, entry sequence, seating layout, and relationship of public to work space. All diagrams for all theaters are to be drawn at the same scale. Minimum Requirements Plan Diagram Section Diagram Sequence diagram Public/work space diagram Writing Exercise: Site Analysis and Design Concept, First Submission due the week of September 24. The writing component will include a discussion of the site analysis, site design and development of a design precedent. Urban and program diagrams as well as background research on the building type, urban typology, etc. should be attached as an appendix. Phase Two Building- Plan/ Section Due October Students will develop a clear stance on the location of program within the site and will refine their argument in precise diagrams, plan, section, and model. In addition, each student will develop a fundamental understanding of structure, envelope and environmental systems. Program, building type, tectonic and material research is critical to a successful project. Minimum requirements Site model 1/8 Site plan 1/16 plans 1/8 sections 1/2 wall section Completed study building model to fit within site model Phase Three - Structure/ Enclosure/ Building Synthesis Due November 27, 28 The purpose of this phase is the synthesis of structure, enclosure, and building systems into the conceptual stance of the building. Students will research past works to understand the integration of building systems and architectural concepts. Precise Large-scale sections and section models will demonstrate a comprehensive design and integration of building space and systems. Students will complete large-scale 1/2 or 1/4 study models early in the phase to understand the concept, design, and integration of systems. Minimum Final Review Requirements Site model 1/8 Site plan 1/16 plans 1/8 sections Building model to fit within site model Perspectives 1/2 wall section Section Model, 1/2" = 1'-0" Writing Revised: Site Analysis and Design Concept, Second Submission due week of November 5. Investigations completed during Phase 3 will necessarily include the revisiting of earlier phases. The Final Review offers a critique of all work completed during the semester, not simply one phase, as a successful project synthesizes the phased studies into a single body of work.

This is intellectually compelling and courageous work that takes risks, and works with results that are beyond what was required for the project. A grade of A means that you have carried one or more aspects of the work to an extent which makes it superior in a number of dimensions. Work that meets the essential expectations and goals for the semester at a fairly high level. Work that is conceived developed and presented in a competent manner, but that reflects little insight into more than the fundamental aspects of the problems, or the architectural discipline. This is work that is done with confidence and conviction but takes fewer risks. It is more than what is required to satisfactorily complete the problem. A grade of B indicates that you are going about your work in a way which distinguishes it from the average. Work that reflects a conscientious effort on the part of the student, but exhibits some inattention to subtlety and detail, or work that is somewhat incomplete in conception, development, or presentation. You have done everything that was expected, you came to class, worked very hard, and generated a response that was average and acceptable. The work met the goals for the semester, but with little rigor and only modest aspirations. Few risks have been taken, and results are typical and predictable for the year level. It does not mean you have failed. It means you have preformed in a satisfactory way. Working hard does not carry with it the guarantee of satisfactory results. Work that suffers from indifference and incompleteness, and exhibits little initiative or creativity. A grade of D is a grade that indicates unsatisfactory results. Students who miss class, or who show up and do not use available time effectively typically earn this grade. Work exhibits a lack of attention to the subject material and understanding in integrating key elements of the intended solution and/or is substantially incomplete. A grade of F means you have failed to demonstrate an understanding of the problem. Merely doing a project does not mean it receives at least a satisfactory grade. Doing the work allows us to assign a grade. Each of the items below is set within the grading percentages presented above and on the syllabus.
