Teaching Employment 2017 Spring Semester Archaeology and Prehistory Archaeology and Prehistory is an introductory course that combines large lectures and small-group discussion sections. I wrote and delivered the lectures, developed exams, study materials, discussion section lesson plans, and homework assignments, and supervised five Teaching Assistants who taught the discussion sections and graded exams and homework. Course enrollment was 329 students. Independent Study: Archaeological Lab Research This course title subsumes several independent study/internships with UMass Archaeological Services. Instruction is shared between myself and other UMAS staff, especially the Laboratory Supervisor. A total of 11 students were enrolled in various projects. This semester I worked closely with a group of three students on an archaeological reconnaissance survey of the site of an eighteenth-century farmstead in Petersham, Massachusetts. Students were trained in documentary research, mapping, and photography. They visited the site to document it and met with local historians. The final product (in process) will be a report and completed archaeological site form to be submitted to the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (property owner) and the Massachusetts Historical Commission, and a presentation to the Petersham Historical Society Fall Semester North American Archaeology

3 3 North American Archaeology is a mid-level gen-ed lecture class. I wrote and delivered the lectures, developed exams, and supervised one half-time grader. Course enrollment was 61 students. Independent Study: Archaeological Lab Research See general description above. A total of 7 students were enrolled in various projects. Practicum I worked closely with a student to prepare text, images, and layout for two interpretive signs for a non-profit environmental action group in Saugus, Massachusetts based on previous research done by UMass Archaeological Services. These have been delivered and will be installed in the late summer-autumn of Independent Study I worked closely with a student to analyze and catalog a large collection of ancient Native American artifacts from western Vermont. I trained the student in artifact and raw material identification and classification. The collection was loaned from the Vermont Archaeological Heritage Center by the Vermont State Archaeologist Summer Session Summer Field School in Historical Archaeology UMass Archaeological Services and I worked closely with UMAS staff, the Department of Anthropology, The Emily Dickinson Museum, and the UMass Division of Continuing and Professional Education to organize and complete an archaeological field school. Field School enrollment was 8 students who were trained in basic field and laboratory methods under the supervision of three instructors. Previous Teaching Archaeological Survey Methods and Practice Spring 2016, Spring 2015, Spring 2008 Archaeological Survey Methods and Practice is a small, seminar-practicum course in which students are introduced to archaeological field methods, skills, and research design development in a (primarily) classroom setting. I developed and taught the course including lectures, individual and group exercises and assignments, and supervised student term projects. Course enrollment students. Introduction to Flintknapping Spring 2016 Introduction to Flintknapping was a one-credit hands-on practicum in which students are instructed in the fundamentals of basic stone tool manufacture. Between 2 and 10 students were enrolled in various projects each semester. In Spring, 2015 I worked closely with two students to analyze and catalog a collection of ancient Native American artifacts that had been donated to the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association and then to create two displays for the PVMA museum. I co-taught the course with Professor Elizabeth Chilton of the Anthropology Department. Course enrollment was 7 students.
