Andrew GREIG (1730?) The earliest we can trace our Greig Ancestors is to Andrew GREIG, possibly born circa 1730, and married to Agnes MURRAY. Agnes MURRAY and Andrew GREIG had the following children: Location of Gavell or Gaval. +2 James GREIG (b. 17 July 1750 Gavell (?Gaval) ) OLD DEER In the north-eastern portion of the parish, lies the old parish of Fetterangus, which is in Banffshire, and comprehends the village of Fetterangus, the lands of Gavals, Cabra, and the Hythies Gaval - where is this place? The National Archives of Scotland hold a Plan of the lands of Gaval, [then in the shire of Banff], Aberdeenshire dated Second Generation 2. James GREIG, son of Andrew GREIG and Agnes MURRAY, was born on 17 July 1750 in Old Deer, Aberdeenshire. He was christened on 19 July 1750 in Old Deer. Copy of birth entry from Scotland's People shows 17 July 1750 GREIG - Andrew Greig in Upper Gavell had a child born of his Spouse Agnes Murray and baptized the 19th of the same month and named James. Witnesses - James Pirie in Mains of Gavell and George Pirie in Upper Gavell. 4

We found a marriage between James Greig and Janet Philip for 26 May 1768 at Old Deer, Aberdeenshire James GREIG had the following children: Third Generation +3 John GREIG ( ) +4?William GREIG (Lived Stevensburn - Was witness at the birth of George, son of John Greig and Sophia Milne) (Stevensburn is about 9 miles to the west of Old Deer) +5?George GREIG (Lived Stevensburn - Was witness at the birth of George, son of John Greig and Sophia Milne) 3. John GREIG, son of James GREIG, was born in 1770 in New Deer, Aberdeenshire. Initially, he worked as an Agricultural Labourer and then became a Meal Miller. In 1800 Sophia gave birth to an illegitimate son, George (as per his birth registry), who was the child of John Greig. As a consequence, John married Sophia MILNE on 19 December 1801 in New Deer when he was 21 and Sophia was 15 (as per copy of marriage entry from Scotland's People). The 1841 census shows that John, Sophia and their children, Andrew, Charles, William and Alexander were all living at Upper Church Street, Turriff. John was aged 65 and Sophia 55. By the time the 1851 census was taken, Sophia had died leaving John now aged 78 and a "Pauper" looking after his son William age 32 who was listed as "disabled", living at Path, Turriff, Aberdeenshire. It would appear that after John's death, William his disabled son, was sent to live at the Parochial Boarding House at 6 Market Street, Turriff (see Item Entry No. 13). Sophia MILNE was born in 29 August 1786 in New Deer, Aberdeenshire (as per 1841 census) and died some time between 1841 to 1851 but despite extensive search, we cannot find a death certificate for her. Sophia and John GREIG had the following children: +6 George GREIG [illegt] ( ) +7 Alexander GREIG ( ) +8 John GREIG ( ) +9 James GREIG ( ) +10 Benjamin GREIG (1809- ) +11 Andrew GREIG ( ) +12 Charles Gardner GREIG ( ) +13 William GREIG ( ) Fourth Generation 6. George GREIG, the illegitimate son of John GREIG and Sophia MILNE, was born on 10 November 1800 in Stevensburn, New Deer, Aberdeenshire. Copy of Birth Entry from Scotland's People reads 1800, Nov. 10th Greig - John Greig at Craigmill had a son brought forth in fornication by Sophia Milne in Broomhill, baptized named George. Witnesses George & William Greig in Stevensburn. 5

George became a Master Mason & Corporation Labourer and married twice. First to Jane or Jean Skene on 3 December 1825 at Turriff, Aberdeenshire and second to Jean Watt on 20 October 1857 at Balgaveny, Forgue, Aberdeenshire. His first wife, Jean or Jane SKENE was born on 20 February 1798 in Boharm, Morayshire, and died on 14 February 1844 in MacDuff aged 45. She was buried in Doune Graveyard, MacDuff, Banffshire - stone number 260. His second wife, Jean Watt was born on 17 August 1807 also in Boharm, Morayshire and died on 22 February 1885 at 3 Tarlair Street, MacDuff, Banffshire. Her death certificate shows that she was the daughter of John Watt, a Crofter and Janet Strachan. The death informant was her Stepson George Greig of 11 Crook O' Nest Street, MacDuff. There were no children by this second marriage. George died of senile decay on 15 August 1886 in MacDuff, Gamrie, Banffshire aged 85 and is buried beside his first wife Jean but there are no dates written for George on the gravestone. His death certificate shows that he was 85 when he died and was living at 3 Tarlair Street, MacDuff and the death informant was his son George of 4 Crook O' Ness Street, MacDuff. Jean (first wife) and George GREIG [illegt] had the following children: +14 George GREIG ( ) +15 Alexander GREIG (1828- ) +16 William GREIG (1831- ) +17 Jean\Jane GREIG (1838?- ) +18 Robert Valder GREIG ( ) 7. Alexander GREIG, a Gardener & Forester, was the son of John GREIG and Sophia MILNE, and was born in 1802 in New Deer. Alexander married twice, first to Mary Cowie in 1823 and then to Jane Cruickshank in His first wife, Mary COWIE was born about 1801 and was the daughter of William Cowie, a Carpenter and Helen Murray. Alexander married her on 16 December 1823 in Forgue, Banffshire. At the age of 67, on 1 January 1868 Mary died at Netherdale, Marnoch, Banffshire from chronic diarrhoea. Her death informant was a neighbour, William Cruickshank. After his first wife's death, Alexander, now aged 67, married Jane CRUICKSHANK on 4 December 1869 in Moss-side Parish Church. Jane was aged 31, a domestic servant who parents were William Cruickshank, a Farmer and his wife Elspet Cruickshank (nee Anderson). Alexander died of retention of urine and cystitis on 5 January 1888 at 3 Ross Street, MacDuff. His death was registered by George Greig, nephew, of 11 Crook O' Nest Street, MacDuff. Jane CRUICKSHANK was born in 1838 in Marnoch, Banffshire and after working as a Domestic Servant, she became a Dressmaker. She died of Jaundice on 13 March 1895 at 3 Ross Street, MacDuff and her death was registered by her father Wm. Cruickshank of 2 Ross St., MacDuff, Banffshire. 8. John GREIG, son of John GREIG and Sophia MILNE, was born on 9 April 1805 in Montquitter, Auchterless, Bannfsh. He appeared in the census "1841/1851/1861/1881" with his wife Jane and children. At first John was an Agricultural Labourer and then became a Malster. 6

In 1831 at Alva, Banffshire, John married Jane Smollett, John and Jane went on to have 11 children. 8 John, a Pauper, died at his daughter Jane's home, from his Chest Disease on 23 January 1892 in Relashes, Rothiemay, Banffshire aged 87. The death informant was his son Robert. John's wife, Jane Smollett was the daughter of John Smollet (a labourer and Ploughman) and Margaret Watt. She was born on 26 March 1812 in Forgue, Banffshire and died from Jaundice on 11 April 1880, age 68, at Yonder Bognie, Forgue. Jane and John GREIG had the following children: +19 Mary GREIG (1831- ) +20 George GREIG (1833- ) +21 Margaret GREIG (1835- ) +22 Robert Calder GREIG ( ) +23 Alexander Cruickshank GREIG (1841- ) +24 John GREIG (1843- ) +25 Ann GREIG ( ) +26 James GREIG ( ) +27 Jane GREIG ( ) +28 Isabella GREIG ( ) +29 Jessie GREIG (1855- ) 9. James GREIG, the 4th son of John GREIG and Sophia MILNE, was born on 1808 in Smallburn, Auchterless Banffshire and christened there on 30 January At first he worked as a labourer but went on to become a Flesher and Corn Agent. Sometime between March 183 and March 1833, he married Anne Stephen, the daughter of William T. Stephen, a Weaver and Janet Paterson. The census records for 1841 shows he was living in the High Street of MacDuff with his wife and children, but by 1851 he had moved to the town of Banff and was still there living at 12 Low Shore, with his family in James worked for Garden Grant & Co., General Merchants and Corn Mealers in the town of Banff. Sadly and for some unknown reason, James hanged himself on 20 December 1861 at the age of 53 (Interestingly, another member of staff, James Edward Kyber, who also worked for Garden Grant also committed suicide 8

the same year - was there something going wrong within this Company! James Edward Kyber was a Lithuanian and is said to haunt the Banff Market Arms Hotel - that's another research story to be done!) The Coroner ruled that James hanged himself "whilst in a state of great mental depression". James' death certificate shows his parents as John Greig, Labourer and Sophia Greig, m.s. Milne, deceased. Informant was Charles Greig, brother and also on the information from Mr. R. Gordon, Procurator Fiscal. James was buried in MacDuff Parish Church [Doune Cemetery]. STONE NO Anne STEPHEN, the daughter of William T. Stephen, a Weaver and Janet Paterson, was born on 19 October 1807 in Gamrie and christened on 25 November 1807 in Gamrie. After John's death, Ann continued to live at Low Shore, but sadly she herself died on 15 February 1868 from abdominal cancer which she had had for 18 months. At the time of her death, she was living at 13 Low Shore, Banff. The informant of her death was her son Garden Greig. Ann was laid to rest in MacDuff Parish Churchyard (Doune Cemetery) beside her husband and some of her children. The census records for 1881 and 1891 shows that Garden was living at 80 Cathcart Road, Glasgow with his wife Marion and children James, Alexander, Helen, Annie and Garden. At that time Garden was working as a Printer Compositor. By 1901 the family had moved to 10 Cleveland Street, Sandyford, Glasgow where Garden was now working as a Printer and Press Reader. Marion Greig, Garden's wife, died on 27 April 1913 in the Victoria Infirmary Glasgow suffering from Gallstone and hypostatic pneumonia. At the time of her death she was living at 22 Springhill Gardens, Glasgow. On 13 November 1916 Garden died at his home - "Inkerman", Southfield Avenue, Potterhill, Paisley - from pernicious anaemia and heart failure. His daughter Anne Stephen Scott [nee Greig] registered his death. Sadly Garden died just two months after his son Garden Jnr. was killed at Thiepval during WW1. Marion and Garden Grant GREIG had the following children: 126 James GREIG (1877- ). James was born in 1877 in Newmains Lanarkshire. He worked as a Tailor's Apprentice and then a Clothing Warehouseman. 127 Helen L. GREIG (1880- ). Helen was born in 1880 in Glasgow and worked as a Dressmaker in Glasgow. 128 Annie S GREIG (1883- ). Annie was born in 1883 in Glasgow and became a Typist. 129 Garden Grant GREIG ( ). Garden was born in 1886 in Glasgow. Garden was a Shipping Clerk in Glasgow before joining the Kings Own Scottish Borderers during WW1, Service Number He was promoted to the rank of Acting Sergeant and sadly was killed at the Battle of Thiepval in northern France on 15 September His name appears on Plate 4A Face 4D in the Thiepval Memorial, a memorial to soldiers with no known grave at Thiepval. 38. William GREIG, son of Benjamin GREIG and Christian SANDISON, was born on 5 September 1829 in Cunnydown, Auchterless, near Marnoch, Banffshire and christened on 10 September 1829 in Auchterless. 39. Margaret GREIG, daughter of Andrew GREIG and Margaret FORBES, was born in 1845 in Gamrie. Her first child Isabella was born illegitimately to John Low, a Farm Servant. At the time of her daughter's birth, Margaret was working as a Farm Servant. The name on the child's birth certificate is given as Isabella Low and John admitted to the paternity of the child. Margaret and John never married. However on 29 Jun 1867 at Glaslaw, Aberdor, Margaret married James Gill who was born on 17 July 1836 in Pitsligo and christened there on 30 July
