27 Honorary Life Members Honorary [Life] Members have been designated by the Board of Directors since Nov. 5, Under present Board Policy these are to be made only by unanimous vote of the full Board of Directors to recognize distinguished service to the cause of conservation or to the Club. In addition, the Bylaws (Art. 6) allow the Board "by unanimous vote, elect annually an Honorary President and Honorary Vice Presidents, who shall become members of the Club exempt from payment of dues." Thus, in essence, if they were not already Honorary Life Members, election to these honorary offices is the functional equivalent. The Club s pre-1906 records were lost in the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire, and only secondary sources are available about such actions of the Board of Directors as the designation of Honorary Life Members and Honorary Officers. Moreover, in the Club s early years, terminology was a little loose, with some persons intended to be made Honorary Life Members being elected as simply Life Members" or Regular Members. In the meeting of Dec. 7, 1935, an effort was made to clear up the confusion with regard to those still alive and on the books by reiterating a list of Honorary Life Members, leaving some uncertainty about those no longer alive including, for example, some persons appearing as Honorary Vice Presidents in listings in the Bulletin, without any action being apparent in the Board minutes. Complicating matters, the Board has apparently on some occasions given some persons Life Memberships without any intention for these to be Honorary, generally in response to a major financial contribution. When the Board granted a Life Membership specifically referring to a contribution to conservation, this has been interpreted as having been a Honorary Life Membership. When specific conservation work is not mentioned, or when a specific financial contribution is mentioned, this has been interpreted as a regular Life Membership. (A minor further complication came after computerization of the Club s records, when some regular Life Members were for a while misrecorded as Honorary Life Members.) At the meeting on May 1, 1948, Francis Farquhar discussed past practice with regard to Honorary Vice Presidents: "in the early years of the Club's activities, people who had not been active in the management of the Sierra Club but who had contributed in an outstanding manner to its work were named Honorary Vice-Presidents; more lately others have been included especially those who have been members of the Board and who have served as President. The procedure had recently been questioned, and was therefore brought before the Board.... the President deferred the election of Honorary Vice-Presidents to a committee,... Robinson subsequently reported the committee's conclusion that Honorary Vice-Presidents should be elected on the basis of their general public contribution to the things for which the Sierra Club stands, and that membership or former membership on the Board of Directors of the Club should not influence their election.... Robinson's motion was unanimously carried." 27

28 In the early years, Honorary Officers were assumed to remain in place after election. Later, their election was renewed each year during the spring meeting. A couple of Honorary Vice Presidents were elected to the Board after being so designated; these persons then were not relected as Honorary Vice Presidents during these terms on the Board, the Honorary status returning after their elected terms ended. One Honorary Vice Presidency was formally ended by Board vote. At its meeting on September 23-24, 2000, the Board designated all living and future recipients of the John Muir Award as Honorary Life Members.
