6 Don Taylor PRESIDENT Southern Watercolor PRESIDENT S MESSAGE n behalf of the Southern Watercolor Society I O would like to welcome everyone to our 36 th Annual Exhibition in Quincy, FL. The Gadsden Arts Center in Quincy enjoys a unique position in regard to SW s previous venues. To my knowledge, the GAC is the only venue in our history that has been repeated. You will find that the GAC is an exceptional place to host such an exhibit. Quincy has all the small town rural charm that you would expect, combined with a true devotion to the fine arts. An exhibit of this caliber requires the dedication and hard work of many people. I wish to thank Linda Pelc and Bill McKeown for their tireless efforts to make this exhibit and workshop a success! Thanks also to the many TaWS members who have committed their efforts. SW has been fortunate to be able to have the expertise of the GAC director, Grace Malloy and her wonderful staff in coordinating this exhibit. T he 36th Exhibit was juried and judged by noted watercolor artist, Mary Ann Beckwith. She faced the always difficult task of trying to select the best from many excellent entries. Once again, SW has produced one of the outstanding exhibits in the country! In the recent Feb 2013 issue of Watercolor Artist, the editors prominently displayed the quality of the past year s SW exhibit winner, a testament to our artists and judges. Mary Ann, thank you for your dedication! I want to thank everyone who submitted their work for consideration. Unfortunately, every exhibit is limited to a maximum number of paintings that can be accepted, and that may preclude many excellent works from being in the show. If you were not accepted, please remember that the next show is another opportunity, so don t be discouraged. And, to those who were accepted, my congratulations! inally, I would like to thank the SW board of F directors for their continued work, support, and true dedication. I can t imagine that a finer group of people exists anywhere. It s been my pleasure to be part of this board for many years and I sincerely appreciate all their help! We are a true volunteer organization, and your directors work to keep your watercolor society functioning. The Southern Watercolor Society will be hosted in April, 2014 by the Kerr Arts and Cultural Center in Kerrville, TX. Mark your calendar now and make your travel plans. Thanks so much for your participation! 8 Linda Pelc Bill McKeown Nebula t amazes me how much artists work on the principle of I faith. It took a great leap of faith for me to accept the responsibility of Exhibit Co-Chairperson for the Southern Watercolor Society s 36th Annual Juried Exhibition. The personal rewards have been many. Bill McKeown and I complemented each other s strengths. Where I worked with data recording, Bill worked with the final details during the week leading up to the opening of the exhibit. I am very thankful for Bill s perfectionism, graciousness and very big heart. I thank and recognize the local members of the Tallahassee Watercolor Society. When needed, these artists were there to unpack and inspect shipped paintings, repair damaged frames, provide food and kitchen help for the opening reception and to welcome visitors to the Gadsden Arts Center. This team has a dedicated passion for promoting the art of watercolor painting. I am grateful to have them among my friends. he best reward to me was the opportunity to speak and T communicate with many members of the Southern Watercolor Society. All inquiries were a welcome chance to help and get to know more SW artists. The paintings exhibited in the SW 36th Annual Juried Exhibition speak to the glory of the artists who are part of this Society. The subjects of the paintings have feeling and sparkle with color and light. The soul of each artist radiates throughout the Gadsden Arts Center. The quality of this exhibit encourages me to work harder on my own paintings. The show is worth all efforts to see it. Linda Pelc Above and Beyond 36th EXHIBITION CHAIRPERSONS n 2008, the Gadsden Arts Center hosted the Southern I Watercolor Society s 31st Exhibition. At that time I asked What more could a community wish for than one of the nation s top exhibitions of fine watercolors, an internationally recognized juror/judge/workshop instructor, a great gallery for the exhibition, and a group of excited artists? This year, with the arrival of the 36th Exhibition, I have my answer. We have a wonderful encore and, again, we can t wish for more! o-chair and TaWS President Linda Pelc worked tirelessly C on a myriad of details to insure a successful show. The exhibition is an outstanding balanced selection of works by wonderful artists, beautifully presented by GAC s Curator, Angie Lewis Barry. A fun-filled workshop, conducted by juror/judge Mary Ann Beckwith, produced fantastic paintings by eager participants. The Gadsden Arts Center s Director Grace Robinson Malloy and her staff assured that every aspect of the exhibition was handled professionally. Volunteers from the Tallahassee Watercolor Society and the Gadsden Arts Center provided invaluable assistance and are greatly appreciated. I hope that you will have an opportunity to visit this outstanding show and explore Quincy and our wonderful surroundings. We will extend our very best Southern hospitality! The show remains up through April 27, Bill McKeown Page 7 Layout + Text 7 Richard Bass Patsy Bates Kate Clark Nesta Cumbie Elizabeth Diaz Carole Fletcher Laura Harris EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Grace Robinson Maloy CURATOR OF EXHIBITIONS & COLLECTION Angie Lewis Barry Lucy Harris Sandy Higdon Reginald James Martha Ann McCaskill Dawn McMillan Joe Munroe Randy Pople Carlene Prince Miss Leigh Reddick Eluster Richardson Becky Tiller Medora Wester Alan Williams TALLAHASSEE WATERCOLOR SOCIETY VOLUNTEERS Linda Cooksey Lana Dixon Wendy Devarieux Tom Fussell Nancy Johnson Stuart Johnson Bill McKeown Susanne Taranto Linda Pelc Eluster Richardson Karol Selvaggio Tonya Toole Mary Transou Cassie Tucker Irma Vergara Juanita Whiddon

10 JUROR S STATEMENT t was an honor to be asked to judge the Southern Watercolor Society Exhibition. When the I entries arrived, the number and quality of the work was exciting and very impressive. I was fortunate to be able to view the paintings several times before beginning to judge the show. The diversity and quality of entries were remarkable. It was obvious that the entries were from serious and dedicated artists. ome works immediately grabbed my attention. They were best described as brave, confident, fresh points of view, strong design or color or competence of craftsman- S ship. Some paintings indicated the artists had accepted challenges and had succeeded. Some were dynamically composed; some had great emotional impact. Others were fresh and bold, masterful. These were the ones accepted. ongratulations to all for a meaningful and very strong show. Thanks for allowing me the C honor of selecting the show and awards and sharing my perceptions of art. To those of you who were not selected try again, try harder. It is only one person s opinion. Keep painting. Never give up.
