2 20 November 1732, Détroit Madeleine Roy, about years old was buried in the cemetery in the presence of Charles Chesne and [François] Lafond. 3 July or August 1748, Assumption/Sandwich Armand de La Richardie, S.J., noted that [Pierre Chesne dit] La Bute, fils, owed him 80 livres, for a cask of wine February 1750, Détroit Pierre [Chesne dit] Labutte, son of Pierre [Chesne dit] Labutte and Magdeleine Roy, married Marie Anne Cuillerier, daughter of Antoine Cuillerier [dit Beaubien] and Angélique Girard. Pierre Labutte, fils, [Antoine] Cuillerier, [Jacques] Godefroy [Pierre s cousin], and [Guillaume Dagneau dit Douville] Lamothe signed the register. 5 Signatures from the 10 February 1750 marriage of Pierre Chesne dit Labutte to Marie Anne Cuillerier 29 May 1750, Détroit Marie Anne [Chesne dit] Labutte, daughter of Pierre [Chesne dit] Labutte, fils, and Marie Anne Cuillerier, was born at four o clock in the evening. She was baptized the following day; Sieur Antoine Cuillerier, the baby s grandfather, was her godfather. Louise Barrois, wife of Pierre [Chesne dit] Labutte, was her godmother. The father and maternal grandfather signed the register. 6 Circa summer 1750, Huron Mission [Pierre Chesne dit] La Butte loaned Armand de La Richardie, S. J., 10 livres of tobacco, to be returned out of the King s Roll [register of financial statements sent by the Intendant to the Minister of the Marine], which Labutte s son had gone to get at Niagara. 7 1 September 1750, Détroit The census recorded 96 households in Détroit. The residents included 80 women, 49 boys over the age of 15, 33 girls over the age of 15, 97 boys under the age of 15, 95 girls under the age of 15, and 33 slaves arpents of land were under cultivation. Following is the information contained in the entry for the Labutte family: Pierre Chesne dit Labutte and his second wife, Louise Lotman dit Barrois. Pierre s son by Madeleine/Magdeleine Roy, Pierre, his wife, Marie Anne Cuillerier dite Beaubien, and their daughter, Marie Anne, born on 30 May 1750, lived with Pierre s father and step-mother. The family owned one slave. The family did not have any land under cultivation. Her godfather was sieur [Jean Baptiste] Beaubien; her godmother was Catherine Vien, 9 wife of [Charles] Chesne. The father and godparents signed the register July 1753, Détroit Pierre [Chesne dit] Labutte, son of Pierre [Chesne dit] Labutte, fils, and Marie Anne Cuillerie [Cuillerier], was born at four o clock at night and baptized the following day. Sieur Pierre [Chesne dit] Labutte, père, [the baby s grandfather], was his godfather. Delle Cuillerie [Marie Josèphe Cuillerier], wife of Claude Gouin, was the baby s godmother. The baby s father signed the register August 1753, Détroit Antoine Cuillerier, acting for Angélique Roy, wife of Jean Baptiste Moison, sold at public auction, a house and lot within the fort on Ste Anne Street to Pierre Labutte, fils, for 125 livres in furs or beavers. The sale was recorded 8 June Chaussegros de Léry map of the Détroit area. His godfather was monsieur Claude Gouin, négociant [merchant] living on the north coast and the baby s uncle. His godmother was Angélique Girard, wife of M r. [Antoine] Cuillerier, négociant living on the north coast, and the baby s grandmother. The father and godparents signed the register January 1757, Détroit Alexis Louis [Chesne dit] Labutte, son of Pierre [Chesne dit] Labutte and Marie Anne Cuillerier was born and baptized the following day. His godfather was Alexis Cuillerier and his godmother was Magdeleine Chapoton December 1758, Détroit Charles de Langlade, fils, advised Jean Jiasson to pay Pierre Chesne dit Labutte, fils, the sum of 2,000 livres en monnaie ayant cours [currency of that time] December 1758, Détroit Charles de Langlade fils promised to deliver or have delivered a panis or panisse, about years of age, to Sr. Labutte fils during the course of the following summer. Labutte fils signed the agreement 30 August January 1759, Détroit Pierre, the son of Catherine, a slave belonging to M. r Pierre [Chesne dit] Labutte, fils, was baptized. Eléopolle Chaine [Léopold Chesne], interpreter for the King, was the baby s godfather; Catherine Campeau was his godmother. The godparents signed the register. Infant Pierre was buried in the cemetery on 26 January in the presence of Joseph Réaume and François Leduc dit Persil February 1759, Détroit An unnamed slave belonging to sieur Pierre [Chesne dit] Labutte, fils, aged about 20, was buried in the cemetery in the presence of Joseph Réaume and François Leduc dit Persil, having been baptized on 5 February May 1759, Détroit Julian [Chesne dit] Labutte, son of sieur Pierre [Chesne dit] Labutte, négociant et bourgeois de cette ville [a bourgeois merchant of this city] and Marie Anne Cuillerier, was born and baptized. His godfather was sieur Derivières [Julien Trottier dit Desrivières], négociant and bourgeois of Vincennes, and his godmother was Suzanne Réaume. The godparents signed the register July 1760, recorded 24 October 1768, Détroit Pierre Dupuy [Dupuis] dit Larose, a soldier of Lacorne l Ainé [the elder], [garrisoned in Détroit], lodged in the house of Louis Campeau, on rue Ste. 5 23 February 1761, Détroit Marie Catherine [Chesne dit] Labutte, daughter of Sieur Pierre [Chesne dit] Labutte, bourgeois commerçant living on the coast of the Huron [south coast], and Marieanne Cuillerier was born and baptized the following day sous condition. The godfather was Zacharie Cicotte, bourgeois commerçant and captain of the militia of this city. The godmother was Dame Godfroy Desruisseaux [Catherine Godefroy, wife of Julian Trottier dit DesRuisseaux] June 1762, Montréal Pierre Chesne Labutte [signed Labutte fils] was godfather to Catherine Langlois, daughter of André Langlois dit Traversy and Marie Anne Prudhomme June 1762, Montréal Pierre [Chesne dit] Labutte purchased Jacquot, a nègre slave, from Madame François Hamelin. He paid her 1,000 livres to settle an obligation of the same value June 1762, Montréal Sieur La Butte [Pierre Chesne dit Labutte], fils, hired Antoine Soyer Lenfant to make a voyage to Détroit [Hodienne]. 25 September or October 1762, Détroit Robert Navarre took a census of both sides of the Détroit River. The census was arranged geographically and does not count women. Following is the information for Pierre Chesne dit Labutte and his son, Pierre Chesne dit Labutte. o Pierre Chesne dit Labutte [fils] was living on the south side of the river from the Ottawa Village to the Huron Village. Age: 32, four arpents of land, four boys, three girls, three slaves and two hired men. Jacques Duperron Baby and his family also lived in Ste Rosalie. Denissen, or his editors, state on 32 that Suzanne Baby was born on 12 July 1762 in Fauberg Ste Rosalie on the South Coast of Detroit. The actual baptismal record, however, merely states that she was born in Fauberg Ste Rosalie {Ancestry.com, Drouin Collection, D, Détroit, Ste-Anne, , 109}. The conflict regarding its location is solved when one examines Robert Navarre, Journal of Pontiac s Conspiracy, Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society, Historical Collections (Lansing, Michigan: Thorp and Godfrey, State Printers and Binders) [hereafter MPHSC], vol. 8, 307. Pontiac s men took a position in the suburb, which was built northeast of the fort at a distance of about two arpents, and which formed a good entrenchment for them. On 327, the Indians and some adventurers had made a trench behind the house of Mr. Baby, which was {blank} arpents from the fort. Trudel, Dictionnaire, 303 mistakenly states that in the 1762 census, Pierre Chesne dit Labutte, père, owned three slaves. Pierre Chesne dit Labutte, père is not enumerated in the 1765 census. It appears that no one living in the fort was enumerated.] 5

6 9 February 1763, Assumption/Sandwich Suzanne, recently born, daughter of a panisse belonging to Pierre Chesne dit Labutte, was baptized. Her godfather was Pierre Chesne and her godmother was Marie Anne Chesne May 1763 to 31 October, Détroit During Pontiac s siege of Détroit, Pierre Chesne dit Labutte acted as the interpreter for the Ottawa and Potawatomi, while Jacques Beaudry dit Desbuttes dit Saint Martin was the interpreter for the Huron. A home owned by Pierre Chesne dit Labutte, fils, where his gardener lived and Labutte s large garden, which contained a number of fruit trees, located north of the fort and about half an arpent to the right of the gate were burned to prevent the Native Americans from using it for shelter and an easy firing position on the fort. With the exception of two houses which escaped the fire, all of the other buildings owned by the French outside the fort were also burned July 1763, Assumption/Sandwich Marie Louise, recently born, daughter of Pierre Chêne [Chesne dit Labutte] and Marie Anne Cuillerier, was baptized. Her godparents were Jean Baptiste Cuillerier and Marie Anne Chêne June 1765, Détroit Pierre [Chesne dit] Labutte, fils, sold a house and land bound by Ste Anne Street in front, on one side by St. Joseph Street and on the N.E. side by land of James Sterling, to Jean Farrelle [John Farrell]. At the time, Pierre Labutte was living on the coste du sud [south shore] and authorized by his wife to take care of the present matter September 1765, Assumption/Sandwich Cécile [Chesne dit] Labutte, daughter of Pierre [Chesne dit] Labute and Marie Anne Cuillerier was baptized. Her godfather was Louis Caesar [Dagneau dit] Dequindre, and her godmother was Marie Louise Robert November 1765, Assumption Marguerite, daughter of Matre Babi, a panisse belonging to Pierre [Chesne dit] Labute, and an unknown father, was baptized. At the time, he had four acres, four boys and five girls, two oxen, five cows, 12 hogs, 150 of wheat and 2.5 [acres?] of wood September 1768, Assumption/Sandwich Marie Des Anges [Desanges] Chêne dite Labute, daughter of Pierre Chêne dit Labute and Marie Anne Cuillerier, was born and was baptized the following day. Her godfather was François Joncaire de Chabert and her godmother was Agathe Françoise Chêne February 1769, Détroit Pierre [Chesne dit] Labutte, son of Pierre [Chesne dit] Labutte and Marie Anne Cuillerier, died and was buried in the church on 28 February. Pierre was about 16 years old and lived on la coste du sud ditte des Outaouais [on the south coast/shore called the Ottawas]. Sieur Pierre Labutte, père [father], and grandpère [grandfather] were present, for his burial February 1770, Assumption/Sandwich Pierre Chêne [dit Labutte], son of Pierre Chêne [dit Labutte] and Marie Anne Cuillerier was born and baptized the following day. His godfather was Pierre Chesne and his godmother was Marie Josephe Chesne April 1770, Montréal François Picoté de Belestre, of Montréal, sent a letter to M r Pierre [Chesne dit] Labutte, fils, in which Picoté de Belestre promised to pay him 35% of Labutte s claim against Belestre February 1772, Assumption/Sandwich Marie Louise Angélique Chêne dite Labutte, daughter of Pierre Chêne dit Labutte and Marie Anne Cuillerier, was born and baptized. Her godfather was Claude Thomas Chêne and her godmother was Marie Anne Chêne. 40 Circa 1773 Agathe Françoise Chesne dite Labutte, daughter of Pierre Chesne dit Labutte and Marie Anne Cuillerier married William Sterling May 1774, Détroit Burial of Pierre Chesne dit Labutte, père, at the age of about 80 years September 1775, Détroit John Porteous, mortgagee [lender] granted Pierre [Chesne dit] Labutte, fils, a mortgage in the amount of 2,391 current money with interest, payable May next. Louis de Joncaire de Chabert and Isidore Chesne commanded the militia. They were accompanied by approximately 1,000 warriors. He had 160 arpents of cleared land. 55 March to 19 August 1782, Detroit to Kentucky In March, the Pennsylvania militia attacked and massacred the Christian Delaware who lived in present-day Ohio. In May, American Colonel William Crawford left Pennsylvania for an attack on the Native Americans who lived in Sandusky (present-day Ohio). British Captain William Caldwell, a company of Butler s Rangers, and members of the Detroit Indian Department departed from Detroit to meet Crawford s men. The battle took place on 4 and 5 June On 5 June, while the Americans attempted to retreat, the Delaware captured and tortured William Crawford to death. The torture was witnessed by Simon Girty and Mathew Elliott, and members of the Indian Department. The Americans struck back at Native villages along the Ohio River. William Caldwell, Simon Girty, and Mathew Elliott, 30 militia and more than 200 Native Americans from as far as Mackinac attacked Bryan s Station (present-day Lexington, Kentucky) in mid-august. Charles Langlade, Jr., and Antoine Ignace accompanied the Native Americans from Mackinac. The Americans strongly defended the stations and pursued Caldwell s men as they retreated. On 19 August, in the Battle of Blue Licks, the British Indian Department and the militia massacred the Americans, while suffering the death of ten Native Americans and at least one member of the militia, Claude [Chesne dit] Labute. Petition #9 Alexis La Bute said he had the honor to serve in the last war as a cadet in the service of Lieutenant Governor Hamilton. Petition #10 Julian LaBute said he had the honor to serve in the last war as a volunteer in an expedition against Kentuck under the command of Captain Joncaire Chabert. 13 2 nd July to 24 th July 1812, present-day Essex County Ontario Julien [Chesne dit] Labute and Alexis [Chesne dit] Labute served as captains of companies in the 2 nd regiment of the Essex County Militia. Pierre [Chesne dit] Labute, was also Captain of a company, but he deserted 15 July American General William Hull invaded Sandwich (present-day Windsor, Ontario) on 12 July 1812; on 13 July, he issued his proclamation threatening the life of any British soldier or member of the militia fighting with the Native Americans. The desertions during July are likely due to a combination of two factors: Hull s presence in Essex County, and the need to harvest crops July to 24 August 1812, present-day Essex County Ontario and Detroit, Michigan Alexis [Chesne dit] Labute and Julien [Chesne dit] LaBute served as captains of companies in the 2 nd regiment of the Essex County Militia. American General William Hull and most members of his army returned to Detroit on 7 August 1812 after he learned that British General Isaac Brock was en route to Amherstburg with reinforcements. On 11 August, Hull ordered the remainder of his troops to abandon Fort Gowrie/Gowris in Sandwich.
