2 2. Introduction The Department of History is concerned mainly with research in Australian History, including its essential British background in the nineteenth century. This is stressed more heavily than would be appropriate in a department mainly concerned with teaching history to undergraduates, since the main function of the Department is research, and the one field in which by reason of the materials available, historical research could in principle be better done in Australia than elsewhere is Australian history. In addition the Department has been concerned with two fields in which (judging by eternal opinions) work of high quality has been done. Modern Indian history will continue as a distinct and appropriate interest of the Department. English medieval history will cease with the departure in 1968 of the scholar who has worked in this field with distinction, but who will not be replaced by a medievalist. In Australian History the interests of the Department are various. They include political, social and intellectual history and labour history; the field it is desired to strengthen is Australian federal history, for which materials in Canberra are especially rich, if the present curious state of practical non-access to nominally 'open' material in the Commonwealth Archives can be changed to conform with the position in other comparable democracies, e.g., the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States. The Department is concerned with two major scholarly projects of general Australian importance for which the University provides financial support. The Australian Dictionary of Biography staff, under Professor D. Pike, forms a largely independent section of the Department of History. The project for the identification and description of sources in Britain relevant to Australian history is being conducted under the joint auspices of the Department of History and the Australian National Library. Staff Professor J.A. La Nauze visited New Zealand during the year to lecture by invitation at four New Zealand universities. In January he was awarded the Ernest Scott Prize for work in history by the University of Melbourne. Mrs Eleanor Searle, Fellow in the Department, who has been concerned with English medieval history, has given notice of her resignation from mid-1968, as her husband has accepted a position in the United States. Dr R.A. Gollan, Senior Fellow, has been on sabbatical leave in England. Professor K. Sinclair, of the University of Auckland, was a Visiting Fellow during third term. Dr J.S. Kendle, of the University of Manitoba, was an Honorary Research Fellow from October. Appointments, subject to satisfactory completion of doctoral degrees in England, have been made to two Research Fellowships. Students and Teaching Siteen students were working for the Ph.D. at the close of the academic year. The following were enrolled during 1967: Ronald Norris for the Ph.D., and Mrs Heather D. Kenway for the M.A. by arrangement with the School of General Studies. At the annual Degree Ceremony the Doctorate of Philosophy was conferred on E.M. Andrews, J.S. Hag~n, W.M. Hale and P.H.M. van den Dungen; B.K. Dickey was accepted for admission to the degree. Mr B.E. Kennedy was appointed to a Lectureship in Monash University. During the year contributors to a series of seminars on 'Second Thoughts' about their own publications of earlier years, or subjects in which they were

3 3. authorities, were Professors C.M.H. Clark (S.G.S.), J.A. La Nauze (I.A.S.), Sir Marcus Oliphant (I.A.S.), H. Mayer (Sydney), T.W. Hutchison (Birmingham), O.H.K. Spate (I.A.S.). Other visiting speakers at seminars were Professor D. Hay (Edinburgh) and Dr D. Butler (Oford). As always, close relations with the Department of History in the School of General Studies have been maintained. Research Work Professor La Nauze completed a volume of selections from the articles on Australian affairs contributed by Alfred Deakin to the London Morning Post, It will he published, with an introduction by him, in He began a study of the work of the Federal Conventions which framed the Australian Constitution. Mr L.F. Fitzhardinge continued work on the second volume of his biography of W.M. Hughes, particularly during his period as war-time Prime Minister, Dr R.A. Gollan completed his book on the early history of the Commonwealth Bank before he left for England in April on sabbatical leave. He is working at University College, London, on the English materials for a second volume of his well-known study of Australian radical and working-class history. Dr F.B. Smith, continuing his work on English social movements and ideas, concentrated on a projected biography of William James Linton ( ), a great wood-engraver, minor poet, Chartist leader and prophet of Utopias. The work on the Linton manuscripts in the Australian National Library is now complete, and some chapters are in draft. Mrs E. Searle completed a study of a series of twelfth century documentary forgeries that had considerable significance constitutionally and in ecclesiastical polity. It is to be published in the English Historical Review. Her work on Battle Abbey continued, and a chapter on the franchise of the Abbey is nearly complete. In collaboration with Mrs B. Ross (Research Assistant) she published with Sydney University Press The Accounts of the Cellarers of Battle Abbey !2.!d> and wrote the Introduction. Dr R. Kumar was in India from March to September, collecting material in Archives and Libraries in Bombay and Delhi for the study of working-class politics in Bombay, Dr Margaret Steven continued work on early Australian economic development, particularly the promotion of eports and mercantile development. Chapters based on this work have been contributed to a volume on the early economic history of New South Wales, to be published in A book on the colonial sealing industry, in collaboration with Dr J. Cumpston, should be completed for publication in Mr M.E. Hoare, Research Associate jointly in the Department of History and the Academy of Science, began work on the history of learned societies in Australia, , and has completed studies of the early societies in several colonies. A chapter on the societies in Victoria, , is to be published in the Records of the Academy of Science. Dictionary of Biography Although under the wing of the Department of History, work on the Dictionary proceeds independently under the supervision of the general editor, Professor D. Pike, who controls his own small staff, and maintains the necessary contacts with the section editors, working parties and contributors elsewhere in Australia. The second volume of the Australian Dictionary of Biography was published on 3 March 1967, thus completing the first Section of the project. During the

The Biographical Register continues to provide a service to many inquirers and under the direction of Mr H.J.
