FOREWORD ROLY KEATING CHAIR, KNOWLEDGE QUARTER BOARD When the Knowledge Quarter vision was first conceived, I don t think anyone involved had any idea how rapidly it would grow, or how deep its roots would go. The original idea was based on the simple observation that within the mile radius or so around St Pancras was one of the greatest concentrations of knowledge-advancing organisations in any world city, but that we weren t necessarily working together effectively, or making the most of our connections. In many cases, we simply didn t know each other. Now, two years on from our launch, we ve grown from an initial grouping of 35 to our current membership of 78, with more joining all the time. What everyone notices is the sheer range of organisations that the Knowledge Quarter brings together big and small, public and private, charitable and commercial. Here, as equal members in one remarkable community, are global multinationals and start-ups, universities and primary schools, great museums and tiny arts companies all dedicated in exhilaratingly different ways to the creation and dissemination of knowledge. In the pages that follow you ll get a sense of how the Knowledge Quarter has been pursuing its ambitions over these past 12 months: in advocacy for this unique area and its potential; in knowledge exchange between our diverse members; in understanding and improving our local environment; and in working together to engage and inspire the communities who live and work alongside us. But perhaps the greatest impact of the Knowledge Quarter is something that s hard to capture in the format of a short report like this. It s the intangible but very real phenomenon of new friendships being made, new connections being forged, new knowledge being born a product of unpredictable, day to day encounters between people from widely different backgrounds, brought together by a sense of shared purpose and possibility. As well as being a period of innovation and activity, 2016 was also the year when the Knowledge Quarter moved on to a more sustainable and professional footing as a company limited by guarantee: an important landmark in the growth of this still young organisation. None of this would be possible without the boundless energy of the Knowledge Quarter members and staff. It's their commitment, and that of my fellow Board members, past and present, and most notably the tireless leaders of the Knowledge Quarter sub-groups, that makes the life of the Knowledge Quarter so exciting and full of future potential.

4 Annual Review 2016 The area around King s Cross, St Pancras and Euston stations is a gateway to the most valuable commodity of the 21st century knowledge. Just as the great Victorian railway engineers built a revolutionary transport hub for people and goods in this part of London, and South Kensington was the knowledge hub of the 19th century, so the Knowledge Quarter has become established as an interchange for creative ideas, research and innovation: a centre for the knowledge economy in the 21st century. WHAT IS THE KNOWLEDGE QUARTER Within a one-mile radius (approximately a minute walk) is a remarkable cluster of organisations spanning research, higher education, science, art, culture and media. Individually they offer resources for specialists in numerous fields, from architecture and the arts to biotechnology and veterinary science. Together they represent a concentration of knowledge and expertise to rival any in the world. What links them all is a focus on the advancement and dissemination of knowledge for research, inspiration, growth, creativity and enjoyment. The Knowledge Quarter brings together over 75 cultural, research, scientific, business and academic institutions both large and small under one umbrella. Positioning the area as unique in the knowledge economy. It has become a recognisable brand that resonates with all kinds of knowledge seekers, whether prospective visitors, UK and overseas students or other knowledge based institutions and businesses. The Knowledge Quarter fosters knowledge exchange and collaboration between staff and users of cross-disciplinary communities to exchange ideas, expertise and evidence. Developing networks to encourage collaborative projects, training, commissioned research and access to funding is engaging a wide variety of audiences and benefiting the local research community. Just as St Pancras International has become a new gateway to Europe, so the Knowledge Quarter has become synonymous in the public mind as the gateway to knowledge.

Our vision is a world-class knowledge and business hub for the 21st century. Our mission is to encourage openness, innovation, networking and opportunity by making the facilities, collections and expertise of our members understood, available and used as widely as possible for the benefit of researchers, creative people, students and the whole community. Strategic priorities 1 Knowledge exchange: Facilitate knowledge exchange and identify opportunities for openness, collaboration, networking and efficiencies. 2 Community engagement: Increase access to resources and collections and create opportunities for local community engagement. 3 Public realm, environment and sustainability: Identify and support work that improves our local sustainable environment. 4 Advocacy and communications: Increase the area s profile through advocacy and stakeholder engagement.

KNOWLEDGE The Knowledge Quarter is creating and encouraging openness in knowledge exchange and collaboration for partners and staff of our cross-disciplinary community in order to create and exchange ideas through the Knowledge Quarter network. The Knowledge Quarter seeks to bring its partners together, sometimes just with each other and at other times with a wider set of key stakeholders in order to explore new partnerships, develop ideas or simply share knowledge. EXCHANGE

Annual Review PROJECT The Knowledge Bank In 2016 the Knowledge Quarter extensively piloted the Knowledge Bank which was launched in early This exciting new online platform allows staff within Knowledge Quarter institutions to connect based upon shared skills and areas of interest. The Knowledge Bank aims to help over 60,000 staff members gain access to the diversity of expertise in the King s Cross area. From curators at the British Library handling the world's earliest books and manuscripts to scientists at the Francis Crick Institute on the cutting-edge of medical research. Each month we ask participants to give an hour of their time to form a new connection. Either by sharing their skills, exploring a topic that interests them or developing a new professional contact from within the Knowledge Quarter. In the growing knowledge economy, face to face interactions are more important than ever and we hope this will encourage organisations to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge on their doorstep. PROJECT Cross Sector Collaboration workshop In December 2016 the Knowledge Quarter delivered a workshop focussing on cross sector collaboration in order to start exploring the ways Knowledge Quarter partners collaborate; learn from each other s practice and to begin a more concerted process of investigation, learning and development in this area. At the Knowledge Quarter we are naturally interested in collaboration inter-organisational, cross-discipline, multi-level collaboration that enables us to achieve the extraordinary goals we have set ourselves. Our goal was to explore and refine the ways that we collaborate by learning from each other. This event provided participants with the unique opportunity to present and share information on their collaborative activities, professionally network and to explore opportunities for collaboration with other Knowledge Quarter partners.

ENGAGEMENT COMMUNITY The Knowledge Quarter is supporting the local community by increasing access to joint resources and collections of Knowledge Quarter partners and creating opportunities that provide social and economic benefits. A comprehensive programme of community engagement events, activities and projects are being developed and delivered that aim to foster relationships between the Knowledge Quarter, young people, schools, charities and the local residential community. PROJECT Knowledge Quarter apprenticeships The Knowledge Quarter, in partnership with Camden Council, launched a higher apprenticeship programme which, in time, will cover science, technology and the creative industries, allowing apprentices to earn and learn on the job while studying part-time. The pilot scheme, starting in autumn 2017, will be for the laboratory scientist apprenticeship where participants will work as lab technicians while they study for a degree connected to the life sciences sector such as biology. PROJECT Primary Careers Conference powered by the Knowledge Quarter In April 2016 the Knowledge Quarter partnered with Netley Primary School to deliver a one day conference in order to showcase the variety of industries and career opportunities available from Knowledge Quarter partners and friends. It is believed that if children relate skills, values and school subjects to careers at an early age they will become more engaged with school and excited about their education. Sir Keir Starmer MP officially opened the conference by welcoming 194 children from 26 Primary Schools in both Camden and Islington to the British Library, his message to the students was to never give up and to believe that any profession is attainable. After the conference each child was appointed as a careers champion and provided with a toolkit, which they used to arrange their own school specific careers event, reaching even more children.

Annual Review PROJECT Curious? Powered by the Knowledge Quarter In July 2016 the Knowledge Quarter held its second festival in partnership with King s Cross. Curious? was a free, fun-packed festival of learning and curiosity bringing together the Knowledge Quarter and King s Cross to showcase the knowledge embodied in the extraordinary cluster of institutions within the Knowledge Quarter and the learning that underpins the new development at King s Cross. Building on the success of the 2015 festival, three areas were developed to more thoroughly engage with multiple community audiences. The main Curious? programme focused on activities and events for an adult audience, Curious? Kids explored the learning and knowledge opportunities from our partners for a youth audience and Curious? Bites offered an engaging series of talks aimed for those that wished to explore the knowledge held within the Knowledge Quarter in more depth. Curious? acted as a catalyst bringing together Knowledge Quarter partners and friends to produce workshops, debates, installations, performances, dance, talks, tours and experiments, all designed to engage and inspire a diverse audience.

10 Annual Review 2016 PUBLIC REALM The Knowledge Quarter is identifying, advocating and supporting work to improve our local sustainable environment in partnership with local councils, TfL, GLA and other organisations. Local and national policy-making bodies are beginning to understand the critical role the Knowledge Quarter plays in representing its partners views on areas that will impact the local environment and sustainability through public realm and larger infrastructure initiatives. Collectively the Knowledge Quarter is working to ensure a long-term sustainable environment that our partners, community members and visitors can enjoy by developing strategic place-shaping activities in the Knowledge Quarter. ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY

PROJECT Knowledge Quarter public realm audit As part of its objectives for 2016 the Knowledge Quarter Board in consultation with the Public Realm, Environment and Sustainability Sub Group allocated Knowledge Quarter funds for the delivery of a Public Realm Audit. The Public Realm Audit was developed to provide a baseline for the quality of the public realm within the Knowledge Quarter. The audit includes research into public realm activities and improvements being undertaken by the London Boroughs of Camden and Islington, Transport for London and significant landowners or agencies. PROJECT Public realm consultations The Knowledge Quarter has responded formally to a number of local transport consultations, including the North-South Cycle Superhighway extension, proposed changes to the Midland Road and Euston Road/ Judd Street Junction and changes to the King s Cross Gyratory. Our consultation responses emphasised that the area s success is reliant on the area s ability to continue to attract highly-skilled workers, visitors and residents, underpinned by high-quality transport infrastructure and to have a first-class public realm which encourages connections, collaborations between residents, workers and institutions. This important piece of research has provided evidence to develop public realm policy interventions, and will assist the Knowledge Quarter in selecting areas that should be prioritised for funding and investment. PROJECT The Knowledge Quarter public realm charrette As part of its mission, the Knowledge Quarter seeks to identify and support work that improves its local and sustainable environment. Through an independent public realm audit of the Knowledge Quarter area, we identified two potential sites in Camden and Islington which would benefit from public realm improvements. In September 2016 the Knowledge Quarter held its first public realm charrette which bought together a cross-disciplinary group including local architects, designers, town planners, property developers, academics, local community leaders, local councils and Knowledge Quarter partners. The charrette recorded ideas, insights, and actions which will be complied in a report to be published in spring This report will provide a strong foundation for the Knowledge Quarter to move forward to develop policy initiatives and respond to funding opportunities.

& COMMUNICATIONS ADVOCACY The Knowledge Quarter continues to advocate as a single voice on issues that are relevant to its partners and is working to increase the area s profile through a regular programme of stakeholder engagement. Local and national stakeholders, policy-makers and influencers are now beginning to recognise the Knowledge Quarter as the UK s largest and most advanced innovation district. The Knowledge Quarter is respected as a representative body that clearly articulates it views on a variety of issues that impact the organisations that make up the partnership. We have responded to a number of Government consultations covering a range of issues from national apprenticeship policy to the future of London s cultural infrastructure. Communications continue to support the implementation of projects around each of the four Knowledge Quarter strategic priorities with our e-newsletter and social media networks developed as powerful tools to keep in touch with partners and stakeholders to disseminate information and opinion. PROJECT Innovation districts policy The Knowledge Quarter is leading on developing national policy in relation to innovation districts. In April 2016, the Knowledge Quarter partnered with London-based think tank Centre for London on new research exploring the capital s innovation districts; the first of its kind in the UK. Launched in the Knowledge Quarter, the report made a number of recommendations about how these districts can be developed further. We have also partnered with a network of innovation districts across the UK including Corridor Manchester and Knowledge Quarter Liverpool, to jointly work on innovation district policy moving forward.

Annual Review The Knowledge Quarter marketing and promotion Our activity over the past 12 months has seen us deliver a comprehensive marketing and promotional campaign to encourage stakeholders, partners and their employees to engage with the Knowledge Quarter. Over the past year we have delivered the following outputs: The Knowledge Quarter has published 12 e-newsletters to publicise core activities, our partners news and events and to encourage discussion and dialogue between all those involved in the Knowledge Quarter. The e-newsletter is circulated monthly to over 1,000 key stakeholders, policy bodies, partners and staff. The Knowledge Quarter website has become our main channel to communicate with our partners. It has received over 30,000 visits in 2016 and is constantly evolving to accommodate the ever growing level of project activity. The website has been populated with 114 blog posts and has introduced a series of guest blogs written by its partners. PROJECT PROJECT Private views Through our series of regular private views and the newly launched Knowledge Bank, all staff members of partner organisations are able to now meaningfully engage with the Knowledge Quarter. This year we have organised private views at a number of cultural partners including the British Library, the Foundling Museum, the Brunei Gallery at SOAS, the Wiener Library and the Wellcome Collection. Policy dinners and breakfasts The Knowledge Quarter has developed a programme of thematic engagement and discussions with key national and local stakeholders. In June we hosted a policy dinner exploring the growing King s Cross cluster of machine learning and artificial intelligence firms. In November, we hosted a breakfast briefing with Sir Keir Starmer MP. In December, we partnered with Corridor Manchester to host a policy dinner on the changing nature of UK cities. In January we hosted a breakfast briefing with Sir Alan Wilson on the priorities of the newly opened Alan Turing Institute.

14 Annual Review 2016 Our task now is to build on what has been an extraordinary second year and to continue to encourage conversations and collaborations between the Knowledge Quarter network and beyond. The Knowledge Quarter will continue to develop collaborative opportunities with its partners and flagship projects around its four key themes. In 2017 we will continue to develop and deliver our programme of workshops and events to encourage the sharing of knowledge and expertise between Knowledge Quarter partners. We will be working with partners to ensure the Knowledge Bank is fully embedded within their individual organisations and that staff are connecting with other Knowledge Quarter partners around areas of expertise. We will be launching a series of KQ How To documents to better share specialist knowledge from Knowledge Quarter partners. We will continue to host stakeholder events to increase policymakers awareness of the potential for the Knowledge Quarter to support the UK s and London s strategic interests and priorities. We will be joining up with a number of Knowledge Quarter partners to support, develop and deliver joint projects. We will explore and support projects around green infrastructure, air quality, green zones and public realm improvements.
