1 Biographies Huan Liu, ASU Huan Liu is on the faculty of Computer Science and Engineering at Arizona State University. He received his Ph.D. and MS. (Computer Science) from University of Southern California, and his B.Eng. (Computer Science and Electrical Engineering) from Shanghai Jiaotong University. His research interests include machine learning, data and web mining, social computing, and artificial intelligence, investigating search and optimization problems that arise in many real-world applications with highdimensional data such as text categorization, biomarker identification, group profiling, searching for influential bloggers, and information integration. He publishes extensively in his research areas, including books, book chapters, encyclopedia entries, as well as conference and journal papers. John J. Salerno, AFRL John Salerno has been employed at the Air Force Research Laboratory for the past 29 years where he has been involved in many research disciplines. He began his career in the Communications Division where he was involved in and ran a number of research efforts in both voice and data communications networks. In 1989 he moved from the Communications Division into the Intelligence and Exploitation Division. Since then he has been involved in research in distributed heterogeneous data access architectures, web interfaces, and in the further definition and implementation of 255

2 fusion to various application areas. He has designed, built and fielded a number of operational systems for the Intelligence Community. He holds two US patents and has over 50 publications. John received his PhD from Binghamton University (Computer Science), a MSEE from Syracuse University, his BA (Mathematics and Physics) from SUNY at Potsdam and an AAS (Mathematics) from Mohawk Valley Community College. He is an AFRL Fellow. Michael J. Young, AFRL Michael J. Young is Chief of the Behavior Modeling Branch of the Air Force Research Laboratory where he directs a variety of research on human factors and socio-cultural modeling. During his twenty-two year career his primary research goal has been improving the representations of human behavior in training systems, command post exercises, and decision aids. His current research explores the incorporation of cultural factors into computational models and the development of mathematical approaches for defining cultural groups and understanding how they evolve over time. He received a PhD from Miami University (Experimental Psychology), and an M.A. (Psychobiology) and A.B. (Psychology) from the University of Michigan. 256
