1 Tasmanian Awards
2 President s Message The unveiling of the Tasmanian Awards entries is a highlight of my annual calendar. I anticipate with delight the projects and awards that reveal my colleagues recent undertakings and their triumphs in doing so although not their tears. Attendance levels at the awards exhibitions demonstrate that I am not alone in this and, once again, this year s entries have not disappointed. We have the highest number of entries ever, a fitting demonstration of the diverse contribution architects make to the design of our cities and towns, providing quality open spaces and buildings, protecting our heritage, addressing affordability and diversity, and connecting communities all of this achieved in a way that enhances liveability and, ideally, leads to sustainable outcomes. The annual celebration of this body of work is apt as the process undertaken by architects in achieving this is multi-layered, skilled and demanding and delivers far more than practical function and pleasing aesthetics. As the jury inspected, probed and uncovered the process that informed the architects resolutions, they would have become privy to the consultation and collaboration involved, and to the analytical abilities, practical understanding, technical skills, creative vision and flair the architects will have applied to create opportunities on multiple levels and to achieve innovative, problem-solving solutions. These outcomes may be less tangible but their unseen value makes up the whole of what we do because architects not only build buildings; we build lifestyle dreams, brands and business aspirations, we build culture, community, new education models, health and wellbeing, we build a must-see, heritage-rich region and we build a vibrant economy and unique place to live. The value-adding process that architects bring to a project makes their engagement a value-for-money investment and brings an invaluable collaboration to any undertaking. Similarly, collaboration within the construction industry and between all Tasmanian sectors can ensure a winwin approach to building a sustainable, vibrant, contemporary and thriving built environment and economy, while retaining all that we who live here hold dear a stunning natural environment and coastline, a rich history and built heritage, and lifestyle opportunities second to none. Congratulations to this year s entrants in the Tasmanian Awards and, particularly, to those who have received awards or prizes. Yvette Breytenbach RAIA President, Tasmanian Chapter Australian Institute of Architects President s Prize 2017 Karen Davis FRAIA After a trailblazing career Karen Davis retired from practising as an architect this year, leaving a noticeable gap in the architectural landscape. A graduate of the University of Queensland, Karen followed her father into the construction industry at a time when she was one of only a handful of women in our profession. After working on numerous projects in Queensland, Karen moved to Tasmania where, from an early age, she took up positions that held responsibility. She became a principal of CDA Architects, established with co-director Peter Cripps in Together they conducted a successful practice for 16 years with Karen s work largely focused on the aged care industry and smaller residential projects and renovations. After Peter s retirement in 2011, Karen continued as principal of CDA until 2015 when she merged with ARTAS to establish a new branch of ARTAS in Hobart. Always a quiet achiever who managed to juggle her career with the demands of raising two children, Karen became a role model for other women in what was a predominantly male domain. She demonstrated that a practice can accommodate flexible practises, part-time positions and position sharing, enabling women and men to remain in the workforce while actively parenting a model that was likely responsible for a number of architects remaining actively involved in practice to this day. In 2011, Karen made history when she became the first woman president of the Institute s Tasmanian Chapter since it was formed in This role capped off many years of contributing to the Institute and the local community. While Karen may argue that she simply followed her passion in these roles, the fact remains that, by her example, she inspired many of her peers, increased visibility of women in the construction industry and elevated the role that they play, thereby becoming an agent for change and equal recognition. I am delighted to recognise Karen for her contribution to the architectural profession by awarding her the 2017 President s Prize. 3 A Message from BlueScope As Principal Corporate Partner of the Australian Institute of Architects for the past 32 years, we at BlueScope are privileged and proud to support excellence in Australian architecture. Great architects constantly seek to differentiate their buildings with leadingedge materials. Likewise, we ceaselessly strive to develop new and refined products, which allow you to create buildings that exemplify contemporary design. This year, we have an exciting new evolution in the form of COLORBOND steel Matt featuring new paint technology designed to diffuse light reflection for an elegantly soft, matt finish. Available in five neutral colours, this contemporary finish offers a sophisticated twist, which alongside our existing COLORBOND steel range, provides even greater design flexibility. COLORBOND steel Matt is manufactured with metallic coating incorporating Activate technology to provide enhanced corrosion resistance, along with Thermatech solar reflectance technology which is designed to reflect more of the sun s heat on hot sunny days. If you d like to discuss COLORBOND steel Matt or any of our building products our nationwide team of specification experts is on hand to provide technical advice and help you bring your design inspirations to life on COLORBOND, Activate, Thermatech, BlueScope, the BlueScope brand mark are registered trademarks of BlueScope Limited BlueScope Steel Limited ABN All rights reserved. 4 COLORBOND Award for Steel Sunnybanks House CORE COLLECTIVE ARCHITECTS COLORBOND Award for Steel While this project is predominantly concrete and glazing elements, it includes exquisite customised steel details for eaves, window overhangs, screens and gutters. The care with which these and numerous internal components have been crafted demonstrates a good understanding of the strength and power of the use of steel in not only structural and roofing components but also ancillary elements. In a year when metal benchtops, shelves and fireplaces were popular inclusions, this house stood apart for the consistency of its many carefully designed and detailed pieces, each helping to weave a rigorous and refined thread through a range of otherwise disparate ideas and materials. The synthesis of the architectural response to the client s aspirations is evident throughout the expression, experience and use of the new centre. The architects have thoroughly exceeded their aim of expressing Lady Gowrie s mantra of children first. The visibility between various links in this complex collection of existing and new buildings makes the project a flagship of its type and brand, to the justifiable delight of the owner and community user groups. 6 Award Launceston Airport Retail Transformation THE BUCHAN GROUP Commercial In a logical and modest series of deft adjustments, the architects have exaggerated and built upon the inimitable quality of this unique airport. By building over an existing single-storey airside form, which was long ago designed for future upwards extension, the scheme shows respect for the considered planning of past decades. The new glazed space offers a complete view of the simple grassed airstrip and looming mountains beyond. The spaces celebrate the typically informal personal welcome that Launceston is proud of and they are filled with life and affection as departures and arrivals crowds mingle there. This project is absolute testimony to the motto long life, loose fit and shows clarity of vision with judicious modesty. Builder Fairbrother Engineer JMG Engineering Quantity surveyor Lifecycle Cost Management Building surveyor pitt&sherry Photographer Rachael Dere Award Shambles Brewery ROOM11 Shambles Brewery sits in a former meat wholesaler s warehouse and shopfront, as the previous occupants continue to occupy a lower level. The project had a fast commercial fit-out time, and the bulk of the budget was invested in brewing equipment. The street bar has been fitted out with robust fixed furniture and handmade copper lights and taps, while a circuitous route past bathrooms with beer-bottle ceilings leads any overflow of patrons to a huge rear warehouse. This raw space houses the brewery and an array of handmade barbeques, table tennis tables and fire pits. The project has significantly reinvigorated this formerly underused area of Hobart, between the CBD and the North Hobart restaurant strip, so much so that the area has now been dubbed midtown. 7 Esmond Dorney Award Residential Houses (New) Cross House TAYLOR AND HINDS ARCHITECTS With both a modest budget and genuine size constraints, this project demonstrates the emergence of a new small house type. It is important to recognise the significance of this tiny house to this genre. The recent presumption of one house to one site is now increasingly challenged by this occupation model, which conceptually reaches back into the historic tradition of land and property sharing. A huge effort by the architects ensures that this unassuming house is very well built and detailed, with evidence of concerted attention to detail and good environmental performance. Landscape, furniture, lighting and amenities are all astutely addressed in a modest way, which belies the depth and rigour involved. This house is an exceptional example of Tasmanian architects authenticity and ability to deal with real problems at a small scale with very limited budgets. Principal builder Rory Wright Builder business South Coast Builders Structural and hydraulic engineers Aldanmark Consulting Engineers Photographer Adam Gibson Award Sunnybanks House CORE COLLECTIVE ARCHITECTS Sunnybanks House shows a consummate handling of form across a range of architectural endeavours. A dramatically curvaceous courtyard, exquisite fenestration, and highly resolved ancillary details make this house a fine example of the archetypal linear plan on a beautiful site. The client has generously supported peak technologies for energyefficient construction techniques. The considered arrival sequence of enclosed courtyard with glimpses through the house, resulting in expansive northern views, will be further enhanced as planting matures. 8 Award River s Edge House STUART TANNER ARCHITECTS Residential Houses (New) River s Edge House is an unobtrusive and respectful contribution to a streetscape, nestling gently into a suburban format in a deferential way. The recessive upper level shows an ambitious obligation to work within a height-limited envelope. Within a landscape setting, the architect expertly employs a proven language of flat plates and flat roofs to yield expansive views of the water over the cliff edge. The project deploys a language of raw finishes in concrete and timber, while incorporating more contemporary Ecologically Sustainable Development details with timeless elegance. The incorporation of storage ideas and spatial allocation recommends this house as a template for suburban family life. Builder Cordwell Lane Photographer Brett Boardman Award D Entrecasteaux House ROOM11 The Nelson House ROOM11 Photographer Ben Hosking Commendation This house, with its powerful dolerite stone perimeter wall, is a heroic alternative to a lightly framed pavilion in the landscape. The finesse of the local stonemasonry typically deployed for rural landscaping has been a romantically insightful choice and the solution eminently suits the rural site. The house acknowledges urban antecedents in contemporary work in Spanish and Japanese architecture, with the comforts of a courtyard plan protecting a permanent residence in a typical holiday setting. The architects have reconciled economic reality with the emotionally rewarding commitment to stone by setting up a range of strict budget-driven parameters. The result is a dramatically composed, sensuously wrought form. The architects carefully considered respect and understanding of the attributes of the original Edith Emery house have resulted in the accomplished achievement of a sense of effortless inevitability in the completed work. 10 Award St Pius X Church ESMOND DORNEY Enduring The conceptual basis for this remarkable building in Taroona respects both traditional church forms and innovative engineering practises. With a spare budget and a need to house a congregation, Esmond Dorney creatively exercised his architectural talents. The public and cultural benefits of this wonderful and modest place of worship are demonstrated by its 60 years of enduring and continuing service. St Pius X is an example of exemplary architectural practise, with many lessons for architects and students for the future, as long as basic upkeep is maintained. St Pius X has a unique relationship to place; in a post-war period, it nestled closely with a natural Australian environment. Today this is important for all and what we cherish as meaningful place. Photographer Nina Hamilton Roy Sharrington Smith Award Captain Kelly s Cottage JOHN WARDLE ARCHITECTS Heritage At Captain Kelly s Cottage, layers of history have been meticulously studied before being judiciously revealed. The new insertions and additions are inventively and lyrically interpreted from elements of the original house. The project is a remarkable example of conservation and readaptation of a private heritage residence, and offers wise and playful lessons for all Tasmanians working on historic buildings for modern occupation. 11 Peter Willmott Award Milkman s Cottage PRESTON LANE ARCHITECTS Small Project Princes Park Toilets TERROIR ARCHITECTS Photographer Jonathan Wherrett Commendation This project is a great contributor to urban streetscape, and to debates around urban renewal. The careful placement and shape of the new form of this tiny house addition blend seamlessly with the original building, and stitch together the row of cottages in this busy, sloping street. The theatre of the recessed entrance and high hall within creates a sense of space belying the footprint. The stairwell, with desk nook above, provides a buffer from the sleep zone, showing a careful crafting of spaces without restricting volumes. Amenities have been artfully incorporated, ensuring no wasted space. The client s tight budget generated a disciplined response, resulting in a beautiful inner-city space providing openness and privacy while respecting the heritage of the original building. 12 Alexander North Award Captain Kelly s Cottage JOHN WARDLE ARCHITECTS Interior St Albi CYKEL ARCHITECTURE Photographer Matt Sansom Commendation The interiors of this project exhibit an extraordinary resolution of inventiveness and rigour. The forensic exploration and revealing of heritage elements combine superbly with the highly crafted built-in and custom-made loose furniture. The selection of materials and furnishings is integral to the design of the property. This interior is proof that interior decisions and considerations are a critical part of a fascinating, complete work of architecture. 13 Barry McNeill Award Sustainable Shambles Brewery ROOM11 This modest project with high ambitions is a perfect example of long life, loose fit, with the sustainability value implied in continuity. When presented with an ordinary building in an under-enjoyed area, the architects have had the clarity to keep whatever they could make useful and, by working to a very tight budget, have avoided the inherent redundancy of overly complex systems. This project is not a monument to a particular brand, style, trend or intellectual aspirations the innovation lies in the area of resilience not invention. Tasmania leads the country in a certain authenticity of approach to reuse and prides itself on the notion that nothing goes to waste. The jury believes this project makes a warranted contribution to the debate around sustainability, albeit perhaps from an off-centre position. Principal builder Jonathon Tew Builder Elevate Building Tasmania Photographer Andrew Knott Award Sunnybanks House CORE COLLECTIVE ARCHITECTS An example of resilience rather than invention, this project encourages debate about true sustainability. While the awards system generally recognises and encourages excellence in built form, a sustainability award should not revolve around virtuosity, novelty or monuments to a particular way of living. The glazed pavilion of this house is a reasonable model, but by importing technologies, it raises questions about whether this is a sustainable way to build. It is becoming increasingly clear that a global energy response demands localised efficiency in order to ensure projects are genuinely sustainable the notion of global ideas, local deployment is critical. 14 Henry Hunter Triennial Prize Prizes #thebarntas WORKBYLIZANDALEX This project reimagined a small stone barn, originally built as stables in 1829, into one of Hobart s best (small) places to stay. The transformation of the building is driven by a strong architectural approach and precise way of handling the material qualities of sandstone walls, timber framework, horse stalls, and shingles. The depth of thinking, clarity of delineation between old and new, inventive reinterpretation and detailing of #thebarntas create a delightful exemplar of how to renovate and recycle a derelict heritage building for contemporary living. Structural consultant Aldanmark Consulting Engineers Heritage consultant Peter Spratt Building surveyor Kim Eagling Builder Cordwell Lane Project manager Mick Lane Project manager Neil Richards Site foreman Andrew Hilder Photographer Nina Hamilton Thomas Bailey RAIA The Emerging Architect Prize recognises the outstanding contribution to architectural practice, education, design excellence and community made by an architect within 15 years of receiving their degree. Thomas Bailey shows an ongoing commitment to design excellence within architectural practice, and his many contributions to education and his engagement with the broader community should be commended and celebrated. From an early age, Thomas has been a leader in the architectural community, not only within the Tasmanian profession, but also beyond, and he has produced an exceptional body of built work at Room11. While running a thriving practice, Thomas has shown an ongoing commitment to the profession by continuing his education at RMIT, undertaking a PhD, and he has also participated in a number of national and regional conferences, been a guest lecturer and tutor at several universities around Australia and curated a series of exhibitions seeking to engage with the public realm. 15 SWT Blythe Student Prize Prizes Process as Spectacle MAXIMILIAN COOKE This project was a clear winner with its delightful graphic presentation, demonstrating an insightful and clear development of the brief, including a developed sense of materiality, thoughtful adaptive reuse and intelligent restraint in the architectural design language. The result is a destination precinct that acknowledges the state s gastronomical delights, along with its future potential growth industries and education, with a clear and playful collection of forms that leave enough of the site free for public activities and events. The jury understood the project fully, from interior and exterior to urban design principles, and considered the solutions evocative and inviting.
