Police recovered the phone worth Rs. 35,000 from the accused. The suspects were identified as Joseph Raja (20) of Thousand Lights and Gopintah (21) of Nungambakkam. According to the police, on the afternoon of Aug.10, the two accused grabbed Umar s phone by threatening him at knifepoint and escaped in the autorickshaw in which they had come. Umar managed to note down the registration number of the auto, which helped the police in tracing and arresting the culprits. They were remanded to judicial custody.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Stray dog problem in Ramanujam Street Sir, There is an increase in the number of stray dogs in Ramanujam Street, T. Nagar, close to TTD temple. Some look diseased and some may be rabid which could be dangerous to the residents of the street. They sit in groups on the pavements, blocking the way for pedestrians. They also boldly enter the compounds of houses in search of food or to find shade to sleep. I appeal to Chennai Corporation to take suitable action to relocate these stray dogs. Mahalakshmi, Ramanujam Street, T. Nagar Portion of tree trunk blocks street margin Sir, A large portion of the trunk of a tree which was cut and removed long ago was left on the margin of the 1st link street in Ragava Reddy Colony, near Jafferkhanpet Post Office and R6 Kumaran Nagar police station. Passersby have converted the spot into an open toilet and often unscrupulous elements defecate next to the EB junction box as the cut trunk provides cover. Household waste and garbage are also dumped around it. The unsanitary condition produces a stench throughout the day and is a health hazard to nearby residents. I appeal to Chennai Corporation to remove the potion of trunk. S. Sambamurthy, T. Nagar. Ph: 2489 4447/ 88707 92754 Residents evolve method to clean Nandanam canal Fed up with the stench from stagnating sewage in Nandanam canal, residents have come up with an organic solution: They plan to inject eco enzymes, made from fermenting jaggery, vegetable or fruit waste and water, into the canal. This will not just clean the water but also put an end to the stench, said Leena Anil, a resident of Nandanam Extn. We have tried everything possible to solve this issue. We met corporation engineers, petitioned the commissioner and the local legislator. Officials don t seem to be bothered about the health hazards. So, we decided to take matters into our own hands, she said. This process has been used earlier in the Yamuna and helped reduce the stench considerably, Leena added. The enzyme, which acts as a catalyst, will kick-start a biological reaction in the water, removing harmful microorganisms. It will also control methane and maintain oxygen levels in the water. It is a natural water purifier and can also be used to convert garbage into fertiliser as it doesn t contaminate soil in any way, said Leena. One liter of eco enzyme is mixed in 1,000 liters of water and kept for fermentation for a day, she explained. The mixture will then be injected into the canal. This will be done at least five Exhibition-cum-sale of Krishna idols By Our Staff Reporter P. Anandhan (resident of 3, Arya Gowda Road, West Mambalam) has organized an exhibition-cumsale of Lord Krishna idols made of papier mâché and clay from 9 a.m to 9 p.m in his residence for Krishna Jayanthi. Prices start at Rs.150. His contact numbers are 98403 70140 and 98408 53227. Rally held to promote India Post Payments Bank The staff members of Ashok Nagar and T. Nagar Post Offices took out a rally along neighbourhood streets to promote India Post Payments Helmet for pillion rider made mandatory The Tamilnadu government on Aug. 27 announced that it is mandatory for both riders of 2- wheelers and pillion riders to wear helmets. An official release stated that 2-wheelers were involved in 40% of the accidents till July 31 this year and, in cases of fatality, 73% of the 2-wheeler riders were not wearing helmets. The fine for not wearing a helmet is Rs. 300. times and based on the result, the process will be repeated. V. Venkataraman, another resident, said that sewage is illegally let into the canal. This canal is an extension of Mambalam canal and joins Adyar river. It was constructed only to enable excess rain water to flow into the river. But it has turned into a carrier of sewage, he said, adding that residents had earlier taken efforts to desilt the canal and clean it up. Due to sewage being let in, we couldn t think of a better solution for now, he said. We plan on using this method till the civic body stops sewage from entering storm water drains, Venkataraman concluded. Bank to be launched countrywide on Saturday, Sept. 1 in 650 branches and 3250 access points. India Post Payments Bank will offer banking services including doorstep service through postmen. Online facility will also be available for paying utility bills like mobile recharge, DTH, electricity charges, gas bill and more. Mr. Police! Where are your helmets? Last week, allowing a PIL petition, the High Court directed the Tamilnadu Govt. to strictly implement the helmet rule for both riders and the pillion riders. But it looks like the rule does not apply to policemen. On Aug. 30, this reporter spotted two policemen on a scooter in Burkit Road, T. Nagar without helmets. With the overhead barricade missing on the T. Nagar side, the driver of a tourist bus inadvertently entered Duraiswamy subway recently. Only when the bus had covered half of the subway, was he cautioned by other motorists about the overhead barricade at the other end of the subway leading to West Mambalam. With no other option, the driver had to reverse to exit the subway. It caused heavy traffic jam Contests for students on Sept. 22 and 23 To celebrate the birth anniversary of Acharya Vinoba Bhave, Gandhian Integrated Forum Trust has organised talent contests for school and college students on Sept. 22 and 23 in Thakkar Bapa Vidyalaya (58, Venkatanarayana Road, T. Nagar). Individual prizes will be presented to the best three participants from each category and overall rolling shield to the school based on the overall performance. Students should send entries through their schools/colleges. The contests will be held separately for school and college students in different age categories. The following are contest details: Sept. 22: 10 a.m: Painting contest on the theme Gandhi and Cleanliness - Pre KG to Std. 12. 2 p.m: Group singing of Tamil folk songs: Stds. 9 to 12. 2 p.m: Oratorical contest on the theme Gandhi s role in women rights - College students. Sept. 23: 10 a.m: Fancy Dress contest on the theme Freedom Fighters - Pre KG to Std. 12. 2 p.m: Tamil oratorical contest on The sacrifices of Kasturba Gandhi - Stds. 11 and 12. 2 p.m: Group singing of folk songs - College students. Schools should email the list of students to p_maruti2002 @yahoo.co.in. For clarification, contact in 93810 07304, 91766 24283. New members for Tamilnadu Small and Medium Industries Association Dr. S. Venkatesan was selected as President of Tamilnadu Small and Medium Industries Mutual Association (70, Arya Gowda Road, West Mambalam) during the meeting held last week. The others elected are Muralidharan (Secretary) and Chinnasami Ramasamy (Treasurer). The Association is a no-profit organization. Its objective is to extend business opportunities to members for mutual benefit. For membership, call D. Sivakkumar in 98417 89603. Barricade only at one end forces bus to reverse in subway for about an hour. Traffic police regulated the traffic as the driver reversed. The overhead barricade on T. Nagar side, which was damaged and removed several months back, has not been replaced. There is no cautionary board at the entrance of the subway to warn drivers of heavy vehicles.

September 1-7, 2018 Corporation evicts vendors from Railway Border Road Pavement shops and other roadside vendors were evicted from Railway Border Road on Aug. 28 to make way for the construction of a pedestrian foot overbridge. There were more than 150 vendors on the stretch. The shop owners showed receipts to our reporter to prove that they had been paying property tax to the Corporation regularly for nearly a decade. They contended that no notice was given to them and expressed displeasure over the sudden eviction stating that they would lose their livelihood. A woman who has been selling vegetables on the road for more than two decades said that the government should have allotted alternative space for them to continue their business. The proposed overbridge is part of the Smart City project to connect Mambalam railway station with T. Nagar bus terminus. The structure will be aligned with Railway Border Road and Madley Road. Thenrajan (a neighbourhood resident), the Madras High Court has directed the Tamilnadu government to check violations of the 15-year-old government order on compulsory rainwater harvesting in all public and private buildings and ensure proper implementation of the same. A first bench of Justice Huluvadi G. Ramesh and Justice S. S. Sundar passed the order on the petition moved bythenrajan. Thenrajan submitted in his petition that the state had made rainwater harvesting structures in all private and public structures compulsory through a government order dated July 21, 2003. Alleging that the order had not been properly implemented, the petitioner wanted the court to direct the state government to monitor proper implementation of the order and to impose fines on building owners who had failed to installed rainwater harvesting structures in their buildings.
