Project Summary BACKGROUND: The General Board of Pension and Health Benefits of the United Methodist Church was constructed in 2010. Since that time, the applicant has developed the name Wespath for it s investment division. To aid in recognition, the applicant is proposing to modify the name of the ground sign for ease in finding the location. The applicant proposes the replacement of the panel face and reinstallation of the new face with a routed face and push-thru graphics with 15.7-inch Wespath, 4.5-inch Benefits, Investments, and 2.5-inch An agency of the United Methodist Church lettering. The panel will be aluminum to match the existing tenant panel with day/night acrylic vinyl on the text faces so the text will appear black during the day and white at night. The applicant is requesting a waiver from the Single Tenant Ground Sign Design Guidelines to allow for a tagline stating An agency of The United Methodist Church. The applicant is not proposing to alter the landscaping currently around the existing ground sign and there are no proposed changes to the building signage. Appearance Commission Review APPEARANCE PLAN COMMENTS: Staff comments after evaluating the proposal for compliance with the Appearance Plan: Sign Criteria from Appearance Plan: Compatibility with building architecture Compatibility with signs on adjoining buildings Harmony with surrounding landscape Good scale in relationship to surroundings Use of harmonious colors Staff comments: o The applicant is proposing the same size panel for the revised signage. o The logo and address are not proposed to be changed. o The Appearance Commission should decide if a tagline stating An agency of The United Methodist Church is appropriate. Previously, the applicant s name included that they were associated with The United Methodist Church and they would like to keep that association on their new signage. o The petitioner shall furnish material and color samples of all proposed signage for review by the Appearance Commission. Landscaping Criteria from Appearance Plan: Grades of walks, terraces and other paved areas shall provide an inviting and stable appearance for walking, and if seating is providing, for sitting. Landscape treatment shall be provide to enhance architectural features, strengthen vistas and provide shade. Plant material shall be selected for interest in its structure, texture, and color and for its ultimate growth. Plants should be indigenous, hardy, harmonious and of good appearance. Where plants are susceptible to injury they should be protected. Staff comments: o The applicant is proposing to preserve all existing landscaping. Should it be damaged during the installation process it should be replaced in kind with like varieties. POTENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD IMPACTS: The signage changes are on an existing single tenant ground sign with a similar design and thus are not expected to have any negative impact on the adjacent properties. 4
