Press Release The Caribbean Philosophical Association is pleased to announce the 2013 recipients of the association s awards for philosophical literature and contributions to Caribbean thought: The Nicolás Guillén Lifetime Achievement Award for Philosophical Literature: Ana Lydia Vega: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ana_lydia_vega Anna Lydia Vega is this year s awardee because of the importance of her work for the study of Puerto Rico and her provocative explorations of the complexities of relationships between women and men, which are the subjects of many studies across the globe. Ana Lydia Vega embodies the spirit of imagination and reflection through the resources of literature, not only at the level of content but also that of style through her experiments in the many ways of expressing thought, especially with regard to the linguistic challenges faced across the Caribbean, a place of confluence and struggle.

The Nicolás Guillén for Philosophical Literature: José Buscaglia-Salgado: http://transnationalstudies.buffalo.edu/faculty/buscaglia.shtml Professor Buscaglia is receiving this award for the overall impact of his work as a literary critic, public intellectual, and institution builder. The committee paid special attention to the influence of his book Undoing Empire, Race, and Nation in the Mulatto Caribbean, which has already influenced scholars across the globe since its publication in 2003. According to Paget Henry (winner of the 2004 Frantz Fanon Prize and Editor of The C.L.R. James Journal), Buscaglia has made a very distinct contribution regarding the Islamic dimensions of early Caribbean thought and also to the relation between early Euro-American thought and Caribbean thought. The dimension of the former is often overlooked. Past recipients of this award include Wilson Harris, Ramabai Espinet, Edwidge Danticat, Gabriel García Márquez, Junot Díaz, The Mighty Chalkdust / Hollis Liverpool, Prafulla Kar, and Gordon Rohlehr.

The Frantz Fanon Lifetime Achievement Award: Fernando Picó: http://conference.ifla.org/past/ifla77/dr-fernando-pico-selected-as-openingsession-keynote-speaker.htm; http://www.preb.com/libri/libfpico.htm; http://www.markuswiener.com/?p=1396 According to one of his referees, Fernando Picó is one of Puerto Rico s national treasures. A world-renown scholar, his influence as an historian, a writer of children s books, and a humanitarian inspires so many. He well deserves the Frantz Fanon Lifetime Achievement Award. Fanon, whose writings and activism, focused as they were on the downtrodden, the outcasts, the lumpenproletariat, the prisoners, the damned of the earth, would no doubt regard awarding Fernando Picó this prize as a proper tribute to his legacy.

Carlos Rojas Osorio: http://www.uprh.edu/~huma/carlosrojas.htm Carlos Rojas Osorio is receiving this award because he is one of the most prolific writers on Caribbean and Latin American philosophy, in addition to many other areas of philosophy. His writings include studies of the Hispanic Caribbean, philosophy in Puerto Rico, 100 years of philosophy in Latin America, and work on José Martí. Crucial is his dedication to the cultivation and flourishing of philosophy and the intellectual history of the region. He is a giant in Caribbean and Latin American philosophy. Past winners of the award include Paget Henry, Walter Mignolo, Brinda Mehta, Enrique Dussel, Molefi Asante, Michel Rolph-Trouillot, Drucilla Cornell, Linda Martín Alcoff, Susan Buck-Morss Alejandro de Oto, Catherine Reindhart, Elias Bongmba, Sybille Fischer, Patricia Donatien-Yssa, Nigel Gibson, Bernard Boxill, Angel Quintero Rivera, Marilyn Nissim-Sabat, Oscar Guardiola-Rivera, Keith Sandiford, and Nathalie Etoke. The two sets of awards consist of a plaque acknowledging the recipient s achievements. They will be conferred at the international conference of the Caribbean Philosophical Association, which will take place on November 21 st to 24 th, 2013 at the Center for Advanced Studies on Puerto Rico and the Caribbean in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. Information on the conference is available at the following website: http://www.caribbeanphilosophicalassociation.org/cpa-2013.html Information on the awards is also available at:
