GREAT HORWOOD : HIGH STREET : 3 The Parish Church of St James HOUSE NO/NAME: Listed Grade 2* 2 HOUSE NO/NAME: 2 Parish Church of St James Religious C14 and C15, much restored in C19 *** The parish church was not surveyed, but has been included here only for completeness. For the church s architectural dertails, see other sources *** 1850-1900 Two bays of two storeys. Forms a varied terrace with adjoining houses Painted brick in Flemish Bond Slate Gable-ended, with single chimney to east end. Foureight-paned sash windows arranged symmetrically around central entrance door
GREAT HORWOOD : HIGH STREET : 4 The Cottage, 3 HOUSE NO/NAME: The Cottage, 3 The Green Listed Grade 2 (number 1289126). 4 HOUSE NO/NAME: 4 Listed Grade 2 (number 1289091). Late C18 Original two bays of two storeys, gabled with end chimneys, with an extra bay of two storeys added to the east with end chimney. C20 garage to east. Forms a varied terrace with adjoining houses. Painted brick, with moulded brick eaves Old plain clay tiles Gable-ended, with two end chimneys and one intermediate Four 3-light leaded casement windows on original building, arranged symmetrically around central doorway. Six-panel door with plain doorcase and narrow hood on brackets. Two 3-light casement window on east addition. Early C19 Original two bays of two storeys, gabled with end chimneys, with an extra 1.5 bays of two storeys added to the east end with end chimney. Attached to number 3 on the west, open to east. Painted brick in Flemish Bond with dentilled eaves Natural slate, steeply pitched Gable-ended with two end chimneys, one mid and one at rear. Casement windows, with small canted bay to west. Four-panelled door, plain doorcase with narrow hood.
GREAT HORWOOD : HIGH STREET : 5 Mary s, 5 HOUSE NO/NAME: Mary s, 5 Shop (closed at time of survey) and residential Formerly site of a forge, then ironmonger s shop, then greengrocer Late C19 Two bays of two storeys, asymmetrical with entrance door offset and integral garage to west. Flat-roof extension to rear. Attached to number 6 on east, open to west. Victorian Wooden boarding to ground floor with red brick above Slate, low-pitched Gable-ended, with end chimney to east (maybe shared with 6) 6 HOUSE NO/NAME: 6 Three large sash windows to first floor; ground floor from east: small square multi-paned basy window, glazed panelled entrance door, square plat-0glass shop window, garage door. Small round window in gable end. Possibly C18 or C19, refronted in the 1960s Two bays of two storeys, end chimney to east; gablet at ridge indicates rear cross-wing. Forms varied terrace with adjoining houses. Painted brick with fake timbering Artificial slate, steep-pitched Gable-ended with end chimney to east. Casement windows with leaded lights
GREAT HORWOOD : HIGH STREET : 6 7 HOUSE NO/NAME: 7 High Stree Mature Virginia Creeper 8 HOUSE NO/NAME: 8 Formerly a greengrocer s shop Late C18 or early C19 Two bays of two storeys wit central entrance door. Attached to number 6 to west, open alleyway to east Yellow brick Slate, low-pitched Gable-ended, with two end chimneys off-set from ridge Wooden multi-paned sash windows, wooden door hood on metal brackets Probably a former farmhouse Late C18 (probably after 1781 fire), with C20 extension Original 2 bays of 2 storeys, with extra bay to south and further C20 bay of two storeys at right angle. Detached, with yard to east and alleyway to west. Mixed red and blue bricks, but with rubblestone to ground floor of north gable end. Slate, steeply pitched Gable-ended, with chimney to north gable and one intermediate C20 replacement casement windows A brick outbuilding with slate roof and single chimney stack was formerly a workshop and/or stable
GREAT HORWOOD : HIGH STREET : 7 10 HOUSE NO/NAME: 10 Listed Grade 2 (number 1289092) Formerly three cottages Late C18 Three bays of two storeys. Bricked-up doorways indicate former divisions. Rear extension. Porch to west with sloping plain-tile roof. The Old Dairy, 11 HOUSE NO/NAME: The Old Dairy, 11 Red brick with first-floor string courses and dentilled eaves Slate, steeply pitched, to front elevation; plain clay tiles elsewhere Hipped, with twin chimney stacks on ridge and external stack to west end Casement windows with small canted bay window to west corner or office? Former dairy C19, altered and added to C20 Single-storey windowless range of former farm buildings facing street with central brick archway to yard and C20 two-storey house Mixed brick; arch widened and restored, buttress to east side Machine-made tiles, steep-pitched Gable-ended. chimneys to front range, single chimney to east gable end of house.
GREAT HORWOOD : HIGH STREET : 8 The Paddocks, 12 HOUSE NO/NAME: 12 Listed Grade 2 (number1213360). Dated 178? in blue bricks on west gable, altered and extended C20 Two bays of two storeys, symmetrical with central doorway. C20 extension and wooden chalet building to rear ( Georgian ) Blue brick with red-brick detailing, string course and quoins; blind panel above entrance door outlined in red brick Natural slate, steep-pitched Gable-ended, with two chimneys et gable ends C19 wooden sash windows with two small C19 canted bays to each side of door. Altered brickwork indicates that four-panel door and plain doorcase with narrow hood on brackets is replacement. See next sheet for Singleborough Road >>
GREAT HORWOOD : HIGH STREET : 9 The Cottage, Singleborough Road HOUSE NO/NAME: Listed Grade 2 (number1288969). The Cottage Singleborough Road Formerly 3 cottages C17, altered Three bays of 1.5 storeys, with outbuilding. End bays timber frame with brick infill, centre bay in red brick. Plinth includes some rubblestone. Outbuilding weatherboarded. Thatch, with decorative ridge and inset upper-floor window. Outbuilding also thatched. Half-hipped, with two chimneys either side of the central bay 3-light casement windows
