INVITED SPEAKERS VIJAY GARG, Vice President, Council of Architecture, New Delhi, is an Alumni of School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, has 27 years of vast experience in the field of Architecture. He has served in the capacities of Joint Secretary, Treasurer & Chairman of Indian Institute of Architects. He has been an Alternate Council Member Region IV & Member of Competition Commission of International Union of Architects. He is Regional Corresponding Editor of ARCASIA Magazine and has been the Founder Member & Chairman of SPA Alumni Association. He is also an Expert Member in the Architectural Board of Education at AICTE. He has also served as a Member on Executive, Academic & General Councils of SPA, New Delhi. HAFEEZ CONTRACTOR did his Graduate Diploma in Architecture from Mumbai in 1975 and his post-graduation from Columbia University New York on a Tata Scholarship. He commenced his career in 1968 with T. Khareghat as an apprentice and in 1977 he became the associate partner in the firm. He started his own practice in 1982 with a staff of two. Today the firm has over 530 employees including senior associates, town planners, architects, interior designers, CAD operators and support staff. Architect Hafeez Contractor, the firm which is winner of over 70 National and International Awards has conceptualized designed and executed a wide range of architectural projects. CHRISTOPHER CHARLES BENNINGER, Born in America in 1942, has lived and worked in India for the past 40 years. He studied City Planning at MIT and Architecture at Harvard University. As an institution builder he founded the School of Urban Planning at CEPT, Ahmedabad in 1971 along with Balkrishna Doshi, there after founded Centre for Development Studies in Pune, India (1976) involving him in rural development, preparation of city and urban plans for many cities in India such as Thane, Kalyan and towns in Asia. The firm's projects have been finalists in the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (2001) and the World Architecture Awards UK (2002, 2009). Several projects have won A+D award, AYA awards, IIA awards and Archidesign awards in the year in the past ten years. SATHYA PRAKASH VARANASHI studied Architecture in Bangalore, urban design in Delhi and heritage conservation in England. A former Professor of Architecture, he is involved in academics, outreach activities, freelance writing, professional associations and NGO initiatives. Right from his early days, he was attracted to designs ideas rooted in cost, culture, climate and creativity, thanks to the influence of architects such as Laurie Baker, Shankar Kanade, K. Jaisim, A.G.K. Menon and K.T. Ravindran. His consultancy firm, Sathya Consultants, in Bangalore has been professing and practising eco-friendly cost-effective architecture for the last 25 years. Many articles of him published in National News Papers like THE HINDU.
YESHWANT RAMAMURTHY, graduate of Sir JJ College of Architecture, Mumbai (1973), began his career with M/s Chandavarkar and Thacker, Bangalore. Two years later he moved overseas to work on town planning projects with M/s Architects Cooperative, Tehran, Iran. Returning to his home town, Hyderabad he started his own practice and has designed buildings across various typologies ranging from high end private residences to humble affordable housing using sustainable technology. He is the founder member of the Hyderabad chapter of Institute of Indian Interior designers, he served as chairman of IIID during 2006-2008. He is on the National Executive of IIID from 2012 to the current term. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. He was recently declared amongst India's 100 most influential designers. KRISHNA RAO JAISIM is a name to be reckoned with in the field of Architecture. He is an Architect, Professor and Patron all in one. Born in the year 1944, Prof. Jaisim completed his studies in architecture in 1966. His thoughts, ideas, and convictions draw inspiration from the timeless novel, The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. The compelling philosophy of Rand's writings compounded with the teachings and encouragement of Ms Sheila Tribe at the Madras School of Architecture shaped Jaisim's inimitable approach and passion towards his calling. Other sources of inspiration from the star-studded constellation that is Architecture include Mies van der Rohe, Buckminster Fuller and Geoffrey Bawa. He formed his firm JAISIM- FOUNTAINHEAD in 1970. He has designed spaces in every arena of human life. DHANASHREE SARDESHPANDE, faculty at the Dr. B N College of Architecture, Pune. She has been a practicing architect and academician since 1995. Her research initiatives are targeted at establishing a pedagogical framework that seamlessly acknowledges use of digital technology and its use in architectural curriculum in design and production. Her experience in academia augments her comprehension of the relevance of digital tools in Indian Architectural curriculum with a strong focus on the Indian context and appropriations needed thereof. She has conducted various National and international workshops across India and has been instrumental in setting up the first Digital fabrication lab for architectural institute in India that houses 3D printers, Laser cutters CNC millers and a 6 axis KUKAKR 30-3 robotic arm. SHANKAR NARAYAN is Graduated in Architecture in 1985 from Bangalore University. He is awarded with "State Architect of the Year Award - 2004" by JK Cement. He is Author of fortnightly column "Nothing Concrete - Musings on Architecture" in Deccan Chronicle newspaper for the period 2004-05. He is Member of the Jury for INTACH Heritage Awards 2005 and Core committee member for 2010 awards. He has organized the exhibition "Metro Impact - view from the Street" in association with Indian Institute of Architects and Goethe Zentrum. Presented papers on several issues at various institutions such as Indian Institute of Architects, Indian School of Business, SPA New Delhi, Inside Outside Mega Show etc. Over the last three decades and more, he has designed so many memorable projects in India under his firm Shankararch.
